It’s the XLBS Show………..Happy Sunday Fellow CoGs! Love the John Ross photo! (now to save the pic and have it printed off and framed to place in my Gaming/Studio) Congrats to the Golden Button winners! Well DONE. I try to budget one hour per evening Monday thru Friday, but if something gets in the way then I mark it on my ‘white board-time management tool’. Trouble is, if I do that too many times in a week then it piles up and when I pay my debt for the week it feels like I’m spending too much time and I… Read more »
hAPPY suNDAY
Got two tacos and the greatest movie ever made. Happy days, Happy days
White chocolate money should never be a thing
@brennon The other option for painting the crystals is just telling your friends life is too short and to %@#$ away off.
Happy Sunday, John needs to paint a happy little tank lol
Happy Sunday All. Great to hear Sonic Sledgehammer get a mention. I have been following him for a few years and he’s such a nice chap. He has a great style for getting armies on the tabletop and he’s a genuinely fun and helpful watch. His dry brushing has saved me a lot of time. Long may his uploads continue. Fabulous golden buttons especially those Bot Wars minis. If anyone is interested I came across a great short podcast in the week on Isandlwana by Douglas Rattray (son of David) it’s on Spotify ‘Chalk Talk’ episode 87 (60mins long) one… Read more »
Well, I don’t use spreadsheets, and the most effective way to go about painting a force is setting reasonable goals according to your skills and experience which ensure steady progress. I found out that I can build, convert, customize and paint 6-8 minis a month to a high display standard. That way I managed to paint my first Star Wars Legion army in approximately 4-5 months, and I’m very happy with the result on each single miniature. And next month I’ll start with my second army for Star Wars Legion.
Ref @avernos & @brennon and the fall from prominence of Eldar Wraithlords: My first experience of 40k Grand Tournament was back in 3rd Edition, and I took a fluffy, all-infantry all-plastic Jungle Fighters army where I’d converted all the heavy weapons out of metal Necromunda bits, where the highest strength weapon I had was Krak Missiles. Both the Eldar players I faced over the weekend had a pair of Wraithlords, neither of which I was able to put more than a couple of wounds on. I then got rofflestomped by the Farseers riding in transports with Aspect Warriors. Needless to… Read more »
I always worked towards an outcome, such as ‘I will be able to play the game if I get this army to a certain state’. The flaw in that approach is twofold.
1. You don’t have to finish an army to table it.
2. My collector instincts go overboard and usually acquires more than I need to play.
So many unfinished armies… but then, is any army ever really finished?
I always think its best to go with what’s the bare minimum I need to play a game. Buy, paint and play with that and then see if you want to continue with that army/game
I know this is not for everybody but in the week I stand up an extra hour early before going to work and paint about 30 to 45 min. If I don’t have to go to work and depending on how clear the day is I watch something on YouTube or OTT (Saturday and Sunday this will be the weekender and xlbs) and try to paint for that duration. If I really feel like not wanting to paint, I don’t force myself so I don’t burn myself out and then not painting for several days.
Thanks for the signal boost guys. Lets hope this helps some people get stuff done while having fun.
Hobby commitments are great. in 2020 I vowed to paint a mini a day. I ended up doing over 500 but it was a mixture of stuff that meant no really ‘big’ project got finished. This year I up’ed the commitment to 2 mini a day but also targetted certain games. My project posts will attest to me getting Blackstone Fortress, Warhammer Underworlds, Warcry, A Song of Ice and Fire and Massive Darkness all completely painted along with a host of smaller projects and a ton of random stuff. I think it’s important to do stuff in batches and paint… Read more »

Like many creative types, I simply have to be in the mood. I can go weeks without picking up a brush and then go on a fantastic journey setting myself realistic goals such as 2-5 miniatures painted in a week… before enthusiasm drops and I take a break. Once my mojo has recharged… I’m back again like a firefly attracted to the flames that will inevitably set fire to my wallet…
I don’t use spreadsheets for my hobby otherwise it will turn in to something like work, and as like many I work to pay the bills, I don’t want my hobby to become a chore and potentially demotivating like paid work…
I used to do “project management” for my hobby. I had Trello boards with status tracking for each unit or such that I was working on. It was useful to batch certain steps, e.g. priming or varnishing. But then it turned out to be more stress inducing than helping. Now I just pickup whatever from my backlog and work on it, based on what I feel like.
Happy Sunday. Sonic Sledgehammer is currently my go to for practical painting advice. I find his stuff much easier to aim for and achieve than say Duncan Rhodes. A good example is Duncan, when painting something like a space marine will give great advice on how to go about doing edge highlights then swish, and it’s done looking perfect. I try that and I have no swish and it looks janky. Whereas Sledgehammer often uses drybrushing for the edges and paints back in the base coat up to the edges, which is something much more achievable. I’m excited for the… Read more »
Yeah his vids are good
The dark eldar gun could be a sniper rifle with the two spikes on the top of the gun?Ben,but do they have snipers in their force’s now.

Happy Sunday lovely people!
@brennon great job on your Eldar. They look great together, nice bases too. @johnlyons Fantastic job with your Templars! A lovely cohesive group of awesomeness, from helmet to base. I like the 3D printed editions to your army too. And speaking of 3D printed, the XLBS has become better for your integrity. Thank you for buying the half track and testing it for us before we buy.
A great show guy’s.
As for Hobby Goals, Rob Hawkins has been sharing a Hobby Bingo board on his blog at the beginning of each year. https://robhawkinshobby.blogspot.com/2020/01/wargame-hobby-bingo-for-2020.html#more It’s a good way to get inspired and motivated if you are having trouble starting. It also will challenge you to do something you have never tried. Sounds like a good Project Blog for the new year???
