GW’s Blood Bowl Spin-Off, Dungeon Bowl Returning Soon!
November 1, 2021 by brennon
Games Workshop announced over the weekend that Blood Bowl spin-off, Dungeon Bowl, would be returning to the tabletop soon. Head down into the dark and do a bit of dungeon crawling whilst also trying to score a touchdown.

For those who don't remember Dungeon Bowl, it's a wizardly spin on the Blood Bowl. The eight Colleges Of Magic pull together teams of assorted players and drop them into a dangerous, trap-laden dungeon.
Much like a normal game of Blood Bowl, touchdowns are the key to winning. First, however, you've got to find the ball amongst the many treasure chests that are dotted in the winding corridors and you'll need to work out the best way to get back to your intended target. The other players aren't going to make that easy either!

Much like the classic game, the new Dungeon Bowl set comes with a bunch of dungeon tiles for you to explore. You'll also get some neat 3D elements to enhance your games including treasure chests to root around in and portals to vanish in and out of.
Besides that, Dungeon Bowl plays practically the same as a normal game of Blood Bowl on a mechanical level. You are still going to be blocking and blitzing your opponents, forming lines of defence and looking for that endzone.
Two teams are also available in the box, the College Of Fire...

...and the College Of Shadow. As you can see, each College has picked a team that represents their particular sphere of magic rather well. You've got the brutal and hard-hitting Ogres and Dwarfs going up against sneaky Dark Elves and Skaven!

Dungeon Bowl was a version of Blood Bowl I didn't ever get to actually play myself but I did see it on the tabletop a few times. It looked like a lot of fun and seems like a good way for budding managers to mix and match their miniatures and play something a little different to the regular game.
Blood Bowl has always been a tactical game but it has always been more about the wackiness and zaniness for me. Dungeon Bowl offers that up and is tied directly into the quicker, revamped rules by the design team.
Are you tempted by this twist on Blood Bowl?

“Are you tempted by this twist on Blood Bowl?” Depends on the price… especially if we remember that DB was free as a part of the WD IIRC… correct me if I’m wrong.
Alright then, I will… 😉
It was originally released as a boxed expansion in 1988 for the 2nd edition game.
I stand corrected then! Thank you.
But they did also did a version for 3rd edition that was just printed in White Dwarf, so you weren’t really wrong! 😉
That’s the version I remember and have somewhere…
I love the old GW boxes. The fact that “wargame” wasn’t really a common word and they called it a “3d roleplay hobby game” instead. Brilliant 🙂
In the 3rd edition, Dungeon Bowl was released as part of WD, but you had to have Warhammer Quest in order to use the tiles.
You can still get that version of the rules online, and I think Impact! Miniatures makes tiles that work for it as well.
As Bloodbowl 2nd Edition was £85 RRP I’d expect this to be a similar price, perhaps a little less as it has less players in the box.
It’s essentially a competitive dungeon crawler for two players.
Not interested personally.
In the 3rd ed Dungeon Bowl, it was possible to play with more than two teams on the pitch.
Not for me but sure it will be turning up under a few Xmas trees this year
Great for extra dungeon tills?
Well I’m glad to see it’s return. The last edition mentioned that dungeon bowl was the same as normal blood bowl but on a pitch underground. Glad to see the dungeon tiles. I didn’t pick up the new blood bowl because I have two versions of it but I wouldn’t mind getting this. Love the mid to the original in the video.
I had the original Dungeon Bowl boxed set – originally as a way to get a “cheap” team of dwarves and elves (iirc it was about £25 and the individual teams were selling for around £15-£20 a pop). I thought I was a pro-painter by about my third elf, after mastering “blacklining” all those studs along their legs (yes, it was really paint-it-black-with-a-dab-of-silver-on-top but I thought it was ‘eavy Metal quality, at the time!). It was actually a pretty good game too. Far more entertaining for “bashy teams” than Blood Bowl (which even by the dying days of the 80s… Read more »
While both included teams look really good I will easily skip this one.
Bit of a shame the minis aren’t new sculpts but i’ll probably still get this. I got the original 1988 version when i was 10 and that’s what got me started in the hobby. Still got that box in a cupboard somewhere. It was great fun, hopefully the new version will be too.
That’s great.
I never understood why they made the mixed up teams rather than just using normal Blood Bowl lists. Back in 3rd ed, we just used the same teams we played for the normal league.
Are those teams the players needed to fill out a complete roster for existing plastic teams? They look like that.
