October 22, 2021 by fcostin
Get ready for an unexpected journey of your own, the newest edition of The One Ring RPG from Free League Publishing. After an incredibly successful Kickstarter campaign, the Starter Set and Loremaster's Screen are heading over to retail in the first month of 2022.
Starter Set // The One Ring RPG
If you are anything like myself and Ben, tempted by the lands that span across Middle-Earth. From the tips of Mount Gundabad up to the Gates of Mordor, players can prepare for their own unexpected journey.
Coming to retail is The One Ring: Starter Set and the Loremaster's Screen, both equipping The One Ring fans with everything they need to get immersed into the RPG.
The Starter Set includes three whole volumes of valuable gameplay information and rules to set off into the dangers that lurk within Mirkwood. Plus, there's no way you are going to get lost. Adding maps to the starter set, and 8 pre-generated characters for you to immediately get up and go into the wide fantasy world. There are also bespoke dice d12 and d6 dice, and plenty of cards to keep you immersed, roughly retailing at about £35-40. Depending on where you go!
The maps that are included in the box contain detailed maps of both the Shire and Eriador - meaning the first campaigns contained within the Starter Set should not take us too far a-wandering... yet.

The Loremaster Screen is also going to be available for retail in January too. Being designed in three different sections at 3mm thickness. No player will be taking a peek behind this screen, measuring 855 x 216mm when unfolded - this beast has secrets of the elves contained. Including a short compendium of Rivendell.
If you were lucky enough to back the Kickstarter or even head over to Pledge Manager, you may be lucky enough to be receiving yours now, and there are a good few online retailers with their pre-orders up already. So if you were keen on heading into the visionaries of J. R. R. Tolkein - be sure to take a look at the new edition from Free League Publishing.

looks an interesting game.
I did back this, but downgraded to PDF only after the Alpha was released as I didn’t like everything that they did going from 1st to 2nd edition.
Not had chance to digest the finished pdfs yet, so not sure which rules I will use when I resume the paused campaign as it may require a lot of work to convert the 1e advetures I have to 2e.
Presentation is fine and if you haven’t played 1e you may have no problems with the 2e rules changes.
There is also a 5E version coming soon. I have the original 1e TOR box set and soon after they issued a revised 1e, so I lost interest. I did grab a few of the old 5E AiME books cheap and they are okay as a ‘low magic’ version of D&D.
For those unfamiliar with The One Ring it leans heavily on a ‘journey’ mechanic to simulate the stress and strains of those epic journeys from the novels.
The setting books for the previous editions were excellent for fans of Middle Earth.
I had a look at the 5e version. Didn’t like how they were mixing the two.
One Ring is more than low magic, it’s almost non-existent apart from magical items.
D&D is all about magic.
TOR just has magic in a different way. Character abilities are beyond physical norms, so in effect are magic abilities because the PC’s are ‘heroes’. D&D does the same, but also has explicit magic spells etc.
