Project Z From Warlord Games Returns For A Very Limited Print Run
September 30, 2021 by fcostin
Warlord Games, renowned for its historical miniatures games. Heading up titles on the sea, air and land alike Bolt Action, Blood Red Skies, Victory at Sea and many more.
A popular skirmish wargame from Warlord Games is being resurrected, following the 2016 title Project Z back to the tabletop. With a limited edition pre-order run, the game will include updated rules to bring the apocalypse into 2021.
Gameplay Example // Project Z
Players will head into the streets, in an attempt to survive the harsh environment of the flesh-eating onslaught. 1-3 players will need to scope the infected city, in search of citizens in need. All of which heading off in style in a loud but awesome motorbike.
Utilising a need to survive, players will need to survive in a scenario that will test all aspects. Keeping an eye on ammo and resources to determine life or death, players will hope to see the sunrise the next day with their limbs intact and uninfected!
How long players can survive is down to them. There may not be light at the end of the tunnel for Project Z, but players can sure take down a lot of infected before they meet the bitter end.
Spec Ops // Project Z
Biker Gang // Project Z
Taking control of the survivors out there along with street vigilantes and hoodlums, players will utilize bespoke dice and cards with quick and easy setup. With the hope to rack up a comfortable amount of victory points in-game - each player must use strategy to persist and endure the flesh-eating onslaught.
Be warned, although this title has been proven popular. Warlord has announced that this title will be as part of a very limited print run. Once the game is gone and sold out, it is gone!
Project Z Starter Set // Warlord Games
Pre-orders will be going live on the 2nd of October, so players can get their hands on the Starter Game, and a ton of different expansions to add diversity to the title right in time for spooky season.
Think you have what it takes to survive Project Z?

Fab looking new figures.
So you could say this game is ‘back from the dead’?
“A Very Limited Print Run” I don’t like that wording! Especially in conjunction with “limited edition pre-order run”.
Well at least they are being up front with it and not like a different company that sell out stock faster then diesel fuel on your local Esso.
I suspect the license they have might be about to expire and they want one last chance to sell it and make use of their assets for it.
It was clearances off pretty heavily and has been out of stock for a while.
They did similar with test of honour before that license transferred.
I can see the reasoning… still not liking limited stuff 😉
I remember the original run of this line and other than a rules update I can see little else that’s changed. I’m not sure about the ‘limited run’ which may be a clever way to shift remaining stock that was on sale for a extended period shortly after its initial release. I hope fans of the zombie apocalypse enjoy.
At one point the designer of Project Z was taking suggestions for a new version, possibly without Warlord’s involvement. Project Z has been out-of-stock for a few years now (and was clearanced fairly heavily prior to that) so this might just be Warlord getting off one last hurrah before the game goes elsewhere with a new publisher. Whether Warlord found more stock in a remote Malaysian warehouse or pulled the trigger on one last production run, who knows. But that would seem to explain the weird “once it’s gone, it’s gone!” message.
I bought a copy for the models back in the day.
Wasn’t impressed by the rules at all.
The models where fantastic, though, especially considering the price.
If you need random survivors and/or some modern zombies, this is probably a good deal for you.
Completely agree with that. I bought some boxes when it came out and bought some more when it went on a budget. Useful for lots of games in modern settings. The rules could need an upgrade but the minis deserve some praise.
To be honest Warlord should have just done a platoon level urban fantasy “boltactoin: the undead wars” ruleset/book as soon as they possibly could have after they got Wargames Factory’s distribution rights for the apoc lines: would not have taken much (simply give the Zombies 2 or more army lists: 1 magic origin, 1 not at least , in addition to other forces), is actually whats needed to justify modern era 28mm plastic sets that aren’t undead, and we would all still be playing it probably.
The original is in my collection, notable only really for having the worst smelling box of any game. But will be interested to see what the updated rules are.
Oh wow, that’s not just me then. The hell is that odour? Only game ever that had me recoil at the “new game smell”.
Man, I guess I should have gone to business school like the Warlord guys because this just seems stupid. The game rules are garbage, the only thing people want is the plastics… a limited release? What? Why would this steaming pile be “limited”, I mean if its only the starter box that’s limited.. ok, no ones gonna buy it anyway. But the plastics? I don’t get it. Maybe University of Phoenix has an online business class I can take to figure out some of the Warlord decisions in the past ~3 years.
“Limited Run” and “updated rules”? Problem here is I’d like some kind of idea of how the rules have changed (the old ones weren’t the best, Mantic’s Walking Dead rules were better, but the prices for the WD minis was very expensive). Edit just been over to the Warlord site and…. “Back by popular demand! Keen gamers may recall that Project Z originally launched in 2016. Although the game mechanically remains unchanged, the rules have been updated for clarity and consistency. This re-release has an extremely limited print-run, and will not be made available again when sold out.” So it… Read more »
I suspect far more people are buying for the figures and don’t care about the rules. I think they would have sold more by leaving the extra cardboard and cards out and just selling the minis. I’ll probably pick up a few boxes for Last Days. Much better game system imo.
