The Clash of Spears Will Soon Sound To The Rise Of Eagles
September 30, 2021 by avernos
Fighting Hedgehog's award winning game of raids and skirmishes during the Punic Wars, Clash of Spears, is about to move forward in time with their upcoming release The Rise of Eagles.
Clash of Spears // The Rise of Eagles
Rise of Eagles will be a PDF expansion for CLASH and is scheduled for release in the last week of October and will cover the Roman Late Republic and the Early Empire.
This is great news as it opens up the game for not only a whole new period of conflicts but for gamers who haven't yet tried the system because they weren't interested in the Punic Wars. Now they have no such excuse as the sexy Hollywood period of Romans will be available to add to the existing game.
If you haven't played CLASH yet then it's a tactical game for small scale actions that has both a command and control aspect and a resource management of fatigue. This makes the game constantly offer choices of the best way to play the scenario and pushing too early could leave you over extended and your force decimated.
The Rise of Eagles // Fighting Hedgehog
Although we don't have a page count yet the guys at Fighting Hedgehog have shown off the army lists that are available to play. The Germanic Tribes are actually two lists and the Successors are split into three lists, Macedonian, Seleucid and Ptolemaic, so the expansion will actually contain thirteen new lists to use.
On top of that they are balanced against all of the original lists in the main Clash of Spears book although only the Gauls would be historically accurate to mix with the forces in the new book you could play your Carthaginians against Imperial Rome or the Parthians then feel free.
I would have preferred a real book as I'm terrible with PDFs but hopefully there will be a print on demand version available from the Vault when it goes live, even then I'm still going to be picking it up as the period and game both resonate with me strongly.
Will you be Raising the Eagle?

Looks to be a great expansion, great to see it include the late Republican Romans as well as the more popular Hollywood Imperial Romans.
Now to try and avoid buying some of Victrix’s lovely roman minis.
Very nice. Knew this was coming, but now there is a date to look forward too.
PDF? Bah humbug…it’s got to be in a physical format (and I’m not paying all that money for printer ink). Hopefully a PoD version at a minimum, but it’s sad to see that they don’t feel there’s going to be enough sales to warrant a print run (or the profit margin on electronic versions are just so much greater). But Victrix are doing a rather nice baggie of Dacians (and their Imperial Romans are very good as well), a bit more pricey vs the older Punic bags of figures but still VERY nice figures (and Dacia vs Romans is where… Read more »
we are hoping to do a printed release later but the current supply chain is strained and we didn’t want people to wait if they are eager..
Hopefully we can get a print run soon… we might think of combining Fields of Blood and Rise of Eagles into one book for print…
I personally would like to have the printed copy as well… especially since it is looking very pretty…
so have patience with us and we’ll get you a printed one…
Thanks for taking the time to reply Seldon, yup I HAVE to have it in hard copy (for some reason I just can’t take things in trying to read rules or even a book on a tablet/eReader etc). I guess I’m just a luddite when it comes to these things. Yup I’ll certainly be grabbing a copy when it arrives in “Grognard Format” for us people who still don’t use smart phones (I’ve got a MOBILE phone, but it just calls people and we talk. Not have life governed to by the thing 😀 )
So confirmed now.. printed copy will be available in December after requests from retailers !
This is great. I have been waiting for this supplement since I backed the COS Kickstarter. I am currently working on terrain for the Britannia campaign from Warlord – I already have two painted armies in 1/72 scale. This would fit right in as in-between narrative games.
Could be interesting fighting the Goths an the 13th legion massacre.
OOOH yeah so want to get this PDF and hardcopy 😀 sweet as Lloyd would say @lloyd and more opportunities for Gerry to kick my toys in @avernos (oh mighty Squirrel Lord)
wonder if we could do this in 15mm using my MeG force I’m building thanks to Rob @commodorerob
Of course you can
?
Nice. I’ll be having some of this. I’ve got an unpainted Roman force for saga that i might dig out and paint for this.
Is there a UK distributor? I don’t want to get stung with import taxes again.
For the printed version Victrix, Northstar and Empires at War all sell CLASH so we will get them the printed expansion as well..
Very exciting! I backed the game on Kickstarter and really like the rules. I’ll definitely be holding off buying this until I can get a hard copy, though.
Perfect … in December printed copy should be available !!
Ok… PDF is out in wargame vault and printed copy has been ordered and should be with retailers by December !!! In the end we expanded the lists so you have Seleucids Macedonians and Ptolemaics that can fight the republican armies in the Core Book.. Plus the Late republicans can fight most of the enemies in the core book plus germans, britons, pontus, parthians… and of course everyone’s favorite.. SPARTACUS !! And then you have imperials that can fight germans, britons, parthians, dacians.. so with all this the CLASH universe now expands from the brith of the Republic till the… Read more »
