Community Spotlight: Civil War Rules, A NMM Knight & Dead Man’s Hand
July 28, 2021 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
English Civil War Rules by applemak
The first of the projects we're going to be looking at today is a little bit different. applemak hasn't been painting or building anything in particular but has turned their attention to making their own set of rules for fighting out the English Civil War.
The focus here has been on making a set of rules that can be played with their eleven year old whilst then changing to suit a more advanced game for older wargamers. The real kicker with the advanced rules is that this is then useful for playing out solo campaigns.
So far applemak has been working with the core of any big miniatures game like this, movement. The project has been developing into a series of posts that explore how the rules work in concept and practice which is neat.
As well as that, applemak has already started talking about the issue of command and control, the quality of troops and much more besides. The project is a fascinating one already and it is only just getting started.
If you are interested in getting involved and helping out applemak then you can check out the link above. I'm sure that they would be happy to hear some thoughts and opinions. Maybe you'll have a chance to give it a go yourself.
I like that the rules are going to be two-fold as well. One set which is simpler and the other which is more advanced.
The Aries Knight by seldon9
Next up, we turn out attention to the work of seldon9. Not only have they been doing some great painting but it's bloomin' NON-METALLIC METAL. See what you make of the final results on The Aries Knight from Kingdom Death.
I would say that this is absolutely bloody awesome. When I first saw this I thought it was traditional metallics with shading. So, the trick worked on me! I think the armour for The Aries Knight is absolutely stunning and must have taken a lot of time and effort.
The back of the miniature with the wonderfully blending cloak and the base are also superb. This was a great way of showing off how to paint up black and gold armour. There was a tutorial used but the execution is the real thing that sells a technique. No one can just "pilot" someone else's work so seldon9 has done an amazing job here.
Dead Man's Hand by ninjilly
The final project that we're highlighting is one that is just starting out. I really liked how ninjilly had worked hard on this set of Dead Man's Hand miniatures from Great Escape Games.
The colour choices here are great for the time period and the setting. They remind me of all the best cowboys, outlaws and more that you might have seen in movies. The bases need a little bit of work but the sand is a good choice and a little bit of scrub should sell them.
As I say, there is a lot more to go when it comes to this particular set of miniatures and the game in general. But, I really liked the initial set of painted miniatures and hopefully, this will be a great way to spur the project on. More of that work and I will be a happy bunny when this is all finished!

Thanks for the button! @brennon the other box of minis is my reward for making it through the last two weeks so hopefully you’ll see some lawmen after the weekend
It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again
Thanks for featuring my work 🙂 Well done to applemak and ninjilly, great work!
