Tackle Lovecraftian Traitors In FFG’s New Game, Unfathomable
June 11, 2021 by brennon
Unfathomable is the new board game coming from Fantasy Flight Games later this year. Set in the Arkham universe, you'll be boarding the SS Atlantica and trying to make sure that it gets to its destination before it's dragged into the deep by Lovecraftian horrors.
Unfathomable // Fantasy Flight Games
Unfathomable is a reimplementation of the mechanics that you'll know from the Battlestar Galactica board game, also by Fantasy Flight Games. Much like in Battlestar Galactica, you'll be given a role at the beginning of the game. Will you be a human or are you a hybrid who is starting to turn and now seeks to ruin the plans of your fellow passengers?
Unfathomable Gameplay // Fantasy Flight Games
During a turn, the game will present you with a mythos card that provides you with a crisis that needs to be solved. This crisis could damage the ship, deplete your supplies or cause all manner of strange events to unfold including the coming of strange beasts from the deep.
The humans will be trying to make sure nothing bad happens to the ship whilst the hybrids will be seeking to stick a spanner in the works and bring the ship to the briny deep! The hybrids will have to be subtle about their ploys, to begin with. If they peak too soon, the humans can make sure they are locked away!
This means that throughout the game you'll be second-guessing everything that your friends are doing at the table. Who put those negative cards into that latest test?
It does look like Fantasy Flight Games have tweaked and changed a few things here and there for Unfathomable to make it stand out from Battlestar Galactica. It's no bad thing that the game uses it as a basis though as I've had a lot of fun playing Battlestar Galactica over the years.
Hidden traitor games are always fun and whilst we've seen companies innovate on them over the years with the likes of Dead Of Winter, I think this could be fun for Lovecraftian fans.
Are you tempted to give Unfathomable a go?

Me + any Lovecraft themed game = empty wallet.
This looks really good, I will be looking into it for sure.
This looks lovely – high production values
Unfortunately, this is not available until September. It is going to sell out quickly. This is a reimplementation of FFG’s Battlestar Galactica Game which is considered one of the first and still one of the highly regarded hidden traitor games. This is a 2.0 of that game. Some of the playtesters were on Reddit recently. One of them has played 50 games already and was very pumped about this new edition.
Yup – I do like what they appear to have done with this tweak on the old BSG game. Still got that in my collection.
Looks good a nice relaxing trip on a cruise ship? Lol.
Anyone reading books during this game is obviously a traitor … ’cause that way madness lies.
I hope there’s a (in)sanity mechanic.
No App? Makes it a possible purchase for me 🙂
No longer will we cry out “you are the Cyclon” nay hence forth it shall be “You are the Hybrid”…Anyone with the Innsmouth look is sure to be first on the list for being thrown overboard
