Top 5 Frightening Films for Halloween
October 17, 2014 by dracs
Last week I wrote up a list of the best tabletop games to play this spooky season of Halloween. But of course you need a couple of good films to watch while you play them. So of course Warren asked me, Beasts of War's biggest coward, to come up with the Top 5 Films for Halloween. Let's do this.
5) Hocus Pocus
I don't watch a lot of horror movies, so before drawing up this list I asked a lot of friends what they watch for Halloween. Surprisingly, one of the most common answer wasn't a horror at all.
Hocus Pocus is a Disney movie which tells the story of a teenager called Max who has recently moved to the famous town of Salem. Max struggles with his new life, dealing with bullies and meeting "the girl of his dreams". However, things get even worse for him when he lights a black candle, accidentally resurrecting three cackling witches to terrorize the people of Salem.
Let me just get this out of the way, I do not like this movie. True it has a lot of very fun moments and everything about it drips with the style of the Halloween holiday. Still, I just don't like it. It's all a bit too corny for me, and the fact that everyone in the film goes on an on about the teenage main character being a virgin feels a little weird.
However, there can be no denying that this is a truly memorable movie. It has some fun characters and scenarios, ranging from the witches attempting to come to terms with the modern world to a good zombie helping the characters make their escape. While I may not like it, it is easy to see why it is one of so many people's must watch Halloween movies.
4) Nightmare on Elm Street
When it comes to Halloween horror, there can be few better places to look than the slasher films of the 80s. There are a lot of memorable films among these, but when it comes down to it I think there are few that will sneak into your dreams like Nightmare on Elm Street.
Nightmare on Elm Street is your pretty typical slasher horror, with sexually promiscuous teenagers becoming the focus of a sinister serial killer. However, what makes Nightmare on Elm Street stand out from all the others is its blurring of the lines between dream and reality, making a world where to fall asleep is to leave yourself open to what has become one of modern horror's most recognisable monsters.
There are, as I said, many iconic slasher horror films from this period, including of course Halloween itself. Yet I felt that this movie's over-the-top gore and striking visuals earn it its place on the list. After all, the other films don't have this.
3) Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn
I have heard many people say that this is the best in the original Evil Dead trilogy. Showcasing a major tonal shift from the more serious first installment, Evil Dead 2 has a well deserved cult following.
There isn't really too much to say in regards to the film's plot. The film carries on from the last movie, with Ash Williams as the last survivor of the Deadite attack upon he and his friends in their forest cabin, where the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis unleashed an evil daemonic force. Now in the second movie, Ash has had to remove his own hand to avoid possession and is joined by a new group including the daughter of the professor whose recording caused all the trouble in the first place.
This is the movie that really turned Ash Williams (and also Bruce Campbell) into the pop culture icons we know them as today. Ash gains his iconic chainsaw fist and once again fights off the evil dead. The deadites themselves still manage to be genuinely creepy, but are a bit goofier this time around, which just serves to make the film even more fun to watch.
Unfortunately I cannot talk too much about this movie as I'm afraid I haven't seen it yet. "But Sam," I hear you typing, "how can you put it on this list if you haven't even seen it?" Well the reason is that this movie is on my personal to watch list this Halloween, alongside Fright Night. While all the movies on this list are, I think, excellent choices for the season, this is the one I want to see for the first time, so I too can appreciate the coolness of Ash Williams.
Hail to the king baby
4) Troll 2
Let's get this straight. Halloween isn't scary. It's a time to dress up in silly costumes, watch movies and celebrate scary things while having a good laugh with mates. In this way, I think that this infamous film is without doubt the perfect choice.
Troll 2 has become one of those prized examples of when a bad movie can be just as fun to watch as a good one, earning a place alongside such movies as The Room and Birdemic.
The film tells the story of a family visiting the village of Nilbog, little suspecting that it is overrun by Goblins (that's right, no trolls in Troll 2). The good news, they are vegetarian goblins. The bad news, they are attempting to feed the people spiked food that will turn them into vegetables.
This is one of those films where practically nothing went right. The acting is terrible, scripting awful, premise ridiculous and effects laughable. Intended as a horror movie, it nonetheless ended up being so bad you could not help but laugh. Regarded as one of the worst movies ever made, it has gained a cult following and is the perfect film to watch with friends over a couple of beers as you gaffaw over its many mistakes.
So it is that one of the worst movies ever scores so high on this list. All we can say is, Oh my God!
And the number 1 Halloween film is...
1) ParaNorman
This choice might surprise anyone who hasn't seen it. But trust me when I say this is without doubt the best movie to watch this Halloween, no matter what age you might be.
Stop me if you've heard this one, a young boy is left feeling outcast from his family and bullied by his schoolmates due to his mysterious ability to see dead people. This is Norman and he lives in a suburban American village that in no way resembles Salem, which has built up a tourist industry around the story of a witch who once cursed the town. Little do the towns people realise, but the curse is all too real, causing the dead to rise once more. Now it is up to Norman, assisted by his sister, best friend, the local Jock and the school bully, to save them all.
Yes, this might seem familiar, and on the surface you might think a lot of this movie is. We are presented with the familiar characters of horror movies, namely the gifted outcast, the dumb jock, the brainless blonde and the arrogant bully. However, ParaNorman's genius is in taking these tropes and making them feel fresh and new once again, with interesting developments and original plot twists.
I don't want to tell you too much as this really is a movie you should experience for yourself. However, the whole thing feels like it was made by people who were big fans of the old horror movies of the 70s and 80s, able to laugh at their silliness while still appreciating their charm. Yet it never feels like a parody, and ends up providing a heartfelt and surprising story.
The stop-motion animation of ParaNorman is breathtaking, and proves that in a world of CGI, this medium still has a place. The movie mixes great laughs and gross-out humour with brilliant characters and even some genuinely creepy moments that will leave you on the edge of your seat. This is the perfect Halloween movie to watch on your own, with friends, or with your kids. Seriously, don't miss it.
Well that's my top five choices. What do you think of them? Do you agree with the list? Did I get any wrong? What would be your top five movies to watch this Halloween?
Imagining this is intended for a fun Hallowe’en movie marathon rather than to watch five excellent horror movies, my list is –
Fright Night (original)
American Werewolf in London
Return of the Living Dead
Scream
Evil Dead 2
Actual good scary horror.
Pan’s Labyrinth
Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark
REC (sod the remake)
The Descent
Mirrors
Obviously J-horror is awesome.
Pan’s Labyrinth would walk onto my top 5 horror movies. In fact, it’d moonwalk onto it whilst high-fiving everyone in the room. Can’t believe the same guy turns out so much tripe when he gets to the US.
Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark is really great.
Also, speaking of remakes worth watching.
Evil Dead remake is very good from a feminist point of view, and from a practical effects side.
The remake of Fright Night is also excellent, and I feel superior.
Pandorum is also a great scifi horror.
Seen ’em all barring the ED remake. I liked the Fright Night remake, but I wouldn’t choose it over the original for a fun Hallowe’en marathon. DBAotD was decent, though Del Toro only co-wrote it. PL and The Devil’s Backbone are both far superior. As is El Orfanato if we’re extending to films he was involved in.
Del Toro is my all time favourite film maker. I wouldn’t classify Pans Labyrinth as a horror so much as a very dark fantasy. However, Cronos or Devil’s Backbone might be better choices for Halloween.
I have to agree @dracs I love del Torro’s work. He’s a brilliant visual director. The scene with the elemental in Hellboy II is just beautiful.
agreed 🙂 Pan’s Labyrinth and the Hellboy movies are fantastic 🙂
love all the dark fantasy imagery 🙂 it’s beautiful looking stuff 😀
now that’s the kind of Halloween movie I like to watch 😉
… it’s all about the costumes on Halloween 😀 😀 😀
eh ? Pans Labyrinth isn’t horror dude 😛
it’s just a dark fantasy or fairytail with some great creature design 🙂
… Spirited Away has got some pretty weird shit in it, but I wouldn’t call that a horror 😛
oh, and Sam is right, if you like horror or Halloween,
then you should definitely watch Paranorman 😉
it’s so damn good and unhinged 😛 lot’s of great references and in jokes 🙂
@Dracs then you don’t know the definition of horror, which is, fear of the supernatural/paranormal or unnatural, which causes is an affront to everyday life, and so causes revulsion, fear and taps into primal fears.
This is what you get when you bring up the topic of horror with a person that blgos and reads and podcasts about horror rpgs.
Now @doctorether , if you could just learn how to spell, we would all take your ‘blgo’ more seriously. 🙂
Gah! 😛 Damn. This is what I get for editing photos at the same time.
If we’re going for fun and silly movies:
Evil Dead 2
Army of Darkness
Army of Darkness again.
Army of Darkness a third time.
Evil Dead 2 again.
🙂
Yeah yeah, I remember the stupid movies!
Let’s see… The movies….
ARMY…
OF…
DAR*cough hrmhrmhrm*
“Look, @maledrakh , I said you damned words! Maybe not every single solitary little syllable, but yeah, basically I said ’em!”
And then, does “Spinach Chin” wizard say:
“Damaging fool!” or . . .
“Dung-Eating fool!” (??)
I need a DVD copy with subtitles. I’ve seen people quote the wizard both ways.
My personal top 5 would be :
1) John Carpenters The Thing
2) Dark Waters (1993)
3) El Topo
4) Videodrome
5) Eraserhead
I would go for
1 The thing (orginal)
2 Cabin in the woods
3 American werewolf in london
4 Poltergeist
5 Superstition AKA The witch
Mine is
Poltergeist 1
Poltergeist 2 sod the 3rd one its crap
Army of darkness
Army of Darkness
Army of Darkness
I like your list, @hawker2000 . 🙂
@orishany those Poltergeist movies scared the bejeebers our of me and still do plus I was so heavily in to Fantasy when I was a lad I loved the fight against knights and the Undead army. Cheers oriskany 🙂
And besides, @hawker2000 , having Army of Darkness on there 3 times shows that you have great taste in thoughtful, eloquent, and well-educated cinema. 😀
“Shop smart, shop S-Mart.” I love that movie.. seen it five times at least.:-)
A true classic.
“Madam, I’m afraid I’m gonna have to ask you to leave the store.”
“Good, bad. I’m the guy with the gun.”
How come noone has mentioned Spice Girls the Movie? That musta been pretty scary right? :O
Hocus Pocus? Well, any movie with Sarah Jessica Parker = automatic horror. 🙁 So I guess it works.
1) The Entity
2) Ghostbusters
3) Evil Dead 2
4) The Exorcist
5) Salem’s Lot
Haven’t watched Salem’s Lot either. Well, on the list it goes.
One of my favourites, just for being so beautifully stylish, is Angel Heart. I also love The Company of Wolves for the same reason. Of course, the greatest sci fi horror film has got to be Alien.
dont trust a man where his eyes brows meet and never stray from the path I think some of the lines go 🙂
Yes, something like that, but my favourite line is, “the worst wolves are hairy on the inside”. 🙂
Company of Wolves is brilliant. The Bloody Chamber is well worth a read too.
Yeah, Company of Wolves oozes atmosphere, and is perfect brain candy for WHFRPG or IKRPG (I mashed up the plot from it with Sleepy Hollow for my IKRPG starting story).
Sorry I mean Sleepy Hollow and Brotherhood of the Wolf. But yes, the transformations from Company of Wolves is excellent.
I got that all mixed up with xz23*j5TTHK. So sorry! 🙂
4 words …
Brotherhood Of The Wolf 😉
… thank me later 😉 your Halloween oddity has been provided 😀
Not a bad movie, definitely an imaginative take on a familiar piece of French folklore. Not what I would consider to be Halloween viewing really, but still worth a watch.
😉 I just like watching weird stuff on Halloween 😛 ha ha
My top 5.
5. Evil Dead: Army of Darkness
4. Evil Dead 2
3. Evil Dead 2
2. Evil Dead 2
1. Evil Dead 2
But being serious. ( Even though I stand by my last list… )
My favourite haloween movies. ( Though not really scary. )
5. Practical Magic ( I know, I know. But it’s a guilty pleasure so STFU. lol )
4. The Frighteners

Actually, Drag me to hell isn’t half bad either
Boo, I want the 40min I wasted watching Evil Dead 2 back (couldn’t even get through it)
Ok here’s my list of movies that really scared me when I was a kid. I have 7, got a top 5 sorted but needed to mention 2 more!
5 Poltergeist
4 Alien
3 The Entity
2 Evil Dead II
1 The Thing – I was way to young to watch this!
Bonus movies The Shining & The Exorcist 🙂
Was just chatting to my better half and she quite rightly pointed out to me if my list is movies that scared me then “REPOMEN” should probably have been no 1.
It creeped me out for weeks lol
The notebook, absolutely terrifying 😛
You’re right, because we’ll all be there one day!
The shining! One if the greatest horror flicks of all time. I second the thing, great film as well. Dawn of the dead is always fun too for some old school cheesy zombie flicks. And if you are in for a laugh while celebrating the holiday check out shawn of the dead, a grusome comedy that never gets old! +1 for the evil dead movies.
The original “The Thing” was much better imo… 1952ish I think.
A minus lol… must be a film critic :-).
1951, actually.
1. The Exorcist
2. Poltergeist
3. The Ring… should be #1 actually. Really creeped me out.
4. Prince of Darkness (something of a cameo by Alice Cooper)
5. The Seventh Sign
Frankenhooker
No one has mentioned Dagon. Or Deep Rising. Or the seminal In the mouth of madness. Or even The day of the Beast.
And of course, Army of Darkness!
I know its not a horror, but I find Gremlins terrifying, the sound tracks are bone chilling, so that’s my number 1 horror lol
5 – Nightmare before Christmas
4 – Ghostbusters
3 – Gremlins
2 – Beetlejuice
1 – Labyrinth (Jim Henson)
For entertainment value I think this list is tip top!
Not a huge horror film watcher and those I have seen are usually more funny than horrific
The only two times I remember being scared was the The ghost of future Christmas in Scrooge and the childcatcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang when I was a kid
Gotta love traditional movies to watch on Halloween!
1- Event Horizon
2- Hellraiser (1,2 or bloodlines, take your pick)
