Warhammer 40,000’s Cadian Shock Troops Get A New Look!
May 10, 2021 by brennon
The armies of the Imperium bring together many, many people from across hundreds of worlds. So, it makes sense that your army in Warhammer 40,000 would have plenty of options to show that. Thankfully, Games Workshop is updating their Cadian Shock Troops set to represent that!

The options that you see here are going to be included in new sets of Cadian Shock Troops in the future. It doesn't do much to change up the older sculpts but it does introduce some much-needed variety to this force. As well as a range of new heads, you'll also find a new selection of weapons to army your Cadians with too.

Bolt Guns, Plasma Guns, Melta Guns and more are included. This should go a long way towards making your Astra Militarum force feel a bit more unique. I will say that it still doesn't match up to some of the alternative head options out there from third-party suppliers but it is nice to see Games Workshop moving with the times.
I guess the only downside is that whilst this is an update for the Cadians, it still leaves many of the different regiments in the Imperium without an update. I'm sure that a lot of people would still love to see updated Catachans, Valhallans and more.
It should also be noted that the heads work with a lot of other Astra Militarum sets out there so you could use this sprue to help you diversify a lot more of your heavy weapon crews, tank crews, command squads and more.
Small steps are helpful though and I'm sure if these go down well, the folks on high might see the other armies of the Imperium as worthy!
What do you make of the new bitz?

Heads without helmets, what a brilliant upgrade idea, the world was bereft of helmetless plastic heads so it will be great to see you can make your IG have no helmets now! They should release a new upgrade with armourless torsos next. Glad they only have one respirator/breather helmet though, you only need one per squad anyway!
That being said, well done with the weapon options.
Even the most well-prepared soldier can lose their helmet in the heat of battle. Plus, Sci-Fi rule-of-cool.
Mention armourless torsos and you’ll summon the “t-shirt save” Catachans
I vote for sky-clad shock troops!
It does look strange and isn’t it also against regulations for Cadians?
But from a player/painter perspective it is nice to have helmetless heads.
I would have liked enough heads with that visor thing and gasmasks.
The helmetless heads do look a bit odd, but the heads will be great for using on other models.
I’d feared scaled-up action pose Primaris Guard leaping off bits of gothic ruins showing off their best parkour moves.
I’m happy with this modest update. If they follow it up with a few updated characters I’ll be very happy.
To maintain the scale of Guard with the new Primaris GW will be releasing a new upgrade pack with bearskin hats and thick soles for their boots 🙂
Oho yeah. Give me combat platforms!
Well the Necromunda packs of new guns and heads cost £12, so I’d imagine these are going to cost the same.
They are included in new Cadian Shock Troops plastic kits rather than being available separately. At least that’s what the article mentions.
Rats, I was hoping to pick up the sprue for some Necromunda kitbashes (as Lazguns are a rare thing to find on ANY Necromunda sprue (other than Van Saar)) 🙁
I’m sure they’ll be on Fleabay moments after hitting the shops.
Overall, I can’t consider myself an old-sculpting fan (I personally dislike a lot chunky sculpts). But after Gaunt’s Ghosts being released I got high hopes on my favourite faction. Seeing this “new look” after all this years…I am beginning to consider on leaving 40k.
Ooh nice so what planet are they fighting for now since Cadia went pop an disappeared down the galactic plughole?
I was hoping that basic IG would get full new sculpts instead of just extra upgrades.
When I saw these I was genuinely hopeful that IG were FINALLY getting the infantry upgrade that they so desperately needed, to find out that this is firstly just an upgrade kit meaning I need to buy this AS WELL AS an infantry squad is a really crappy way of GW doing business, not surprising given their history but really crappy given the pandemic situation, and secondly infuriating that its only for Cadians, Catachan Infantry Squads need new minis, Valhallans, Tallarn, Armageddon, Mordians hell even armies like Elysians and instead we’ve had yet more Sisters of Battle which tbh we… Read more »
With the character models appearing here and there I’d not rule out new models for the other regiments (or Catachans at least – their models are way more dated and their planet still actually exists).
You’d think though thay given they have made regimental rules for Valhallans, Tallarn, Mordians etc. That they would rejuvenate those models as well especially when you consider some of those mentioned have better regimental rules than both Cadia and Catachan…
I think Cadia still need support as the majority content of people’s collections but I do wonder who will be next. There have been a few Catachan characters so that’s why I’m guessing they’ll be the future “default” guard. It is only a guess though.
Fingers crossed they make a kits for all of them I mean some could at a pinch by done together, Valhallans & Vostroyans both wear quite long heavy gear so that would fit, Armageddon & Mordian have similar uniforms down to the waist, only real odd one out is Tallarn, but I would imagine they could be done in a kit with Tanith as I’m guessing the Ghosts will be making a proper come back least I hope so I’d love to see them on the table top properly as the light infantry stealthers they are in the novels, and… Read more »
The way it is worded seems to imply this will be part of the infantry squad box
It might be but I know during the livestream they made clear it was an additional upgrade kit, hopefully they do fold it into the main boxset
Just give us some new guardsmen GW!
With the new sculpting tech at their disposal, official new releases of Steel Legion, Iron Guard, Vostroyans, and especially Praetorians would ALL be possible and very welcome, but this really feels like a cop-out. I know they have their fans, but I’ve always found the Cadians REALLY boring.
A perfect example for the saying: too little too late…
Aside from a few new heads, i see the same pose my Cadians had before… They shoudl’ve gone for Valhallans or the desert guys in my opinion…
These would have been very welcome several years ago but the base models are horribly out of date. They’re way too chunky. The traitor guard from Blackstone Fortress have far better proportions and are of a similar height.
Unfortunately this probably means no new Guard for several years.
Still too chubby for my liking.
