Blight Wasps, Caber Tossers & Bone Grinders For Hordes
October 9, 2014 by brennon
The world of Hordes from Privateer Press is to be graced with some more beasts and warriors of the more wild realms. See what you think of the Blight Wasps, Kriel Warriors and Farrow Bone Grinders marching (and flying) to war!
"Moving as a single mass of beating wings, scything claws, and pulsing stingers, swarms of blight wasps sow panic and death across the battlefield as they inject enemies with the poison of dragon blight itself. A single dose of blight wasp toxin is enough to kill a man, but the creatures mindlessly sting over and over again as the hapless victim writhes in agony before finally succumbing to death."
"Kriel warriors are the heart of the armies of the trollkin. These bands of warrior brothers march to war in defense of their people wielding shields, hand weapons, and an indomitable spirit. They are often accompanied by mighty caber throwers, who put their prowess in the traditional sport of their people to lethal use against all enemies."
"Well versed in the mystic arts of butchery, farrow bone grinders seek out choice organs and marrow-filled bones from slain warbeasts in order to harness the mystical power lingering within. These parts are combined with blood, bile, and lymph to create powders, unguents, and talismans able to empower farrow warlocks toward victory on the battlefield."
Weirdly enough the Blight Wasps might look a little bit too cute? I think the wings being that particular colour and so thick is making those things that should be creepy look like they bumble around buzzing instead.
The other two packs are repackaged versions of existing miniatures but the Kriel Warriors are now in plastic which is awesome. The Farrow Bone Grinders are unfortunately still metal but since most of them are one-piece miniatures that's not so bad.
Will you be picking these up?
Those flying lesser warbeasts look like they could do some real damage.
Oh wow…love the butterfly zerglings. “Am I pretty, commander?”
Great to see the kreil warriors go plastic and get their much-needed price drop. And weight drop.
As for the wasps, they look gret but they are very pricy. It will be prohibitively expensive to run a large swarm.
‘Unfortunately still metal’ – that’s a curious phrase and one that in some parts would start a riot.
I know the positives of plastic; lighter weight, easier assembly, cheaper (?) but you can’t tell me that the plastic Trollbloods starter set looks better than the old metal one and these kriels look like they follow the same style.
Interestingly enough there is lot of negativity towards metal models these days. I only agree with that negativity when it comes to bigger kits because those are pain to put together but not with smaller onces like characters. I still have my metal 40k and WHF special characters and I would not want those any other way. Not even Azrael who’s back pack I admit was kinda pain to glue together.
I agree, single piece metals are brilliant.
PP are not even using good plastic, so its as if they are discontinuing my army 1 release at a time.
If they were using the same plastic as GW, Renedra or Wargames factory I could understand the sentiment of leaving the metals behind, but they are using Heroquest grade material.
No- Heroquest used the same Polystyrene that GW has continued to use. It is very good for inorganic shapes, but tends to make organic shapes look less organic. Privateer Press’s PVC is the opposite- it is great for organic shapes, but tends to round the edges of armor a little.
The disadvantages of the medium have informed GW’s artistic direction for a long time, and so you can’t always see the problems with it (like Scout hair, feather wolves, and why they haven’t updated the Sisters of Battle).
Oh- I also love metal.
Heroquest is not PVC?
Thanks for that info, I may have to test that one day and give some Goblins their axes back.
Other disadvantages of PVC is that is does not take a file well, does not take scraping with a knife well (any others problems?).
I have many EM4 PVC shields and they are fine at their price level, but they are just not nice to work with compared to GW’s/WGF/Renedra’s styrene.
Unless as very low prices I avoid PVC miniatures like I avoid finecast.
These are the same sculpts as the old Kriel Warriors (back when Felix Paniagua was doing the trollbloods).
I’m convinced that after I paint them up, no one would be able to tell the difference.
But I totally agree with you about the new box set. I like the new Madrak, but the warbeasts definitely took a step down.
Those blight wasps are adorable!
Alien wasps I’ve seen it all now.
Yeah, forgot to say the wasps are great. They have that evil ‘I’m going to ruin your picnic’ grin
I think PP is one of the only model company that gets things labeled as new release when only packaging is changing. Yes the trollblood box now has the entire unit together and that should be news but the Farrow unit is unchanged.
Also, the trolls are plastic and lighter in soneone’s bag. Yay for less back pain lifting your bag!
Well GW is even worse with that. They might add couple parts but kit is still same in different package. Least PP either changes material and with it gives better sculpts (all they plastic kits are better than old metal once) and gives new cards when they change edition.
GW gets to do that whenever they take some old sculpt and add it to their ever growing “Online Exclusive” lineup. Same old sculpt, presumably the same packaging, just not available at your local game store.
And while I understand why PP labels everything with a new SKU as a new release, I kind of think that news sites could distinguish.
