Warlord Release Some Cute Soviet Dogs to Help Blow Up Tanks
October 3, 2014 by dracs
Warlord Games have a new anti-tank team for the Soviet forces to deal with the oncoming German tanks and it's definitely not one for animal lovers. Man's best friend joins the tank wars with these Soviet Army Dog Mines.
These dog mines are reportedly one of the war's more famous miss-fires. The idea was that the dogs had a bomb strapped to them and would be trained to run under enemy tanks. When they did, a mechanism would flip, detonating the dog and the tank along with it. However, the dogs often got scared by the noise of battle and would even duck under the Soviet's own tanks.
Unsurprisingly, the use of these canine anti-tank teams faded in 1942, but they were nonetheless credited with a number of tank kills and apparently unnerved the Germans enough to cause them to shoot dogs on sight. While they might not be the most pleasing method of tank disposal, they were still a prevalent part of early Soviet tactics and could be fun to include in your games of Bolt Action.
Will you send these dogs out after the enemy tanks? Or are you afraid they might just play fetch with the explosive and bring it back?
*looks at my little dog, who’s sleeping on my pillow and is snoring loudly* 🙁
These kind of releases really make me sad as they remind me about cruelty that humans tend to have towards other living creatures. Including towards once that are often companions and are even considered to be family members. And I am not even dog person!
This is why I Play Orks in 40k and Not “Real” soviets in a historical game, bomb squigs are just Not as cute.
Bomb dogs happened as much as people burning alive in their tanks. If you get too caught up in the “reality” of what you are gaming – because it is just that: gaming – then it is time to try a new game. This could be why Fantasy & Sci-Fi games are always easier to accept and have fun playing.
In regards to the game, dog bombs are really good.
4 up of a D6 to hit, never modified, 18 inch range, but up can advance so basically 24 inch range, 3 dogs for 72points regular that can all be fired at once, compared to say a bazooka team that can also advance the shoot, at a maximum range 30 inchs but on 6’s to hit with 1 shot and 78points.
I’ll take the dogs any day.
