You Can See Right Through Sally 4th’s New Clear Bases
September 25, 2014 by dracs
Sally 4th recently released a new set of clear plastic bases for your minis and have now increased this range with larger scale ones suitable for your more massive miniatures.
We previously saw clear bases being used when Colin came to show off his Battle Systems terrain on the Weekender. The great thing about clear bases is that it negates the need for basing techniques as the terrain can be seen through the model's own base, meaning you'll never have a case where the model has been based for a jungle and is standing in a desert.
One particularly cool thing Sally 4th have done with these is that some, particularly the new larger scale ones, have been designed with Warmachine in mind. This means that they feature a line etched across the middle so you can still keep an eye on facings.
I personally think that clear bases are a great idea, making the model feel a little less static as the terrain changes beneath them as they move. However, for some I could imagine them taking away from part of the fun of modelling the miniature and their shiny appearance could be a little distracting.
Do you think Sally 4th's clear bases are a good idea, or do you prefer to base your miniatures yourself?

Clear bases is actually good idea. This way it’s all about terrain and there is no sittuations were bases that models have would not match terrain. It does not look particulary good in my opinion when bases are not for used terrain type.
The only problem lies when playing on terrain other than grass, as skratches appear and then looks a bit tatty tbh, which then makes you base over the top to hide the scratches…… unless I am missing something ofc?
Could always coat them with some varnish to help alleviate that.
Of course! This is so obvious when you see it.
Maybe if you gave it a semi gloss varnish, the shiny would be less?
I’m not totally sold on clear bases. I think most often the terrain will decide which type of base looks better. Also, I like working on bases. They’re an essential artistic element in the overall composition of the mini.
This would also help with condition tokens and tight formations. The minis can stand on the token, so there isn’t any of the “no, the other orc was the one on fire” arguments.
I was wondering a few things…
1. what glue to use to avoid frosting?
2. whether these would be a good idea for making cardboard markers (such as those coming in the Operation:Icestorm starter set) more durable.
3. whether I like them or not…
Any ideas?
Could always laminate the cardboard markers, or even cut out some plasticard and gluing them to it.
I kinda like this idea, maybe even painting a black line around the edge to assist with determining edges.
These are great. Im considering rebasing my Death Guard and may have just found my solution!
Overall it’s a nice idea.
Looks great. But then again, so do properly based minis. I can see these being better for things like Sedition Wars, Deadzone, Dreadball, Mars Attacks, AvP and Space Hulk.
