It might work as a base but it probably won’t generate shadows. Generally speaking, with light hitting things from above, the underside would be darker and have deeper shadows, so by priming the underside dark and the top light you automatically darken and areas of natural shadow and light. If you reverse them and do black on top white on the bottom you won’t necessarily get that effect. However it will allow you to paint the underside a brighter colour than the top.

So I guess the answer is it could work depending on what you want to achieve with it.
