Osprey Preview Absolute Emperor For Napoleonic Wargamers
February 3, 2021 by brennon
Osprey Games is going to be releasing a new set of rules for Napoleonic wargaming by Boyd Bruce in May 2021. Absolute Emperor will dive into a new set of rules to use for huge battles between armies during this period of history.
Absolute Emperor // Osprey Games
Players will take control of armies divided into multiple corps where command and control of these is the most important factor of gameplay. All of this will come down to your skill and the influence and elan of your general!
Within the book, there will be options for those wanting to play out many different battles like Austerlitz, Borodino, Leipzig, Waterloo and more from throughout this period, venturing into different campaigns too.
There isn't much more on the game right now but there is a Facebook Group you can join to learn more about it. It seems like the core rules are going to be nice and simple to get your head around which is always helpful, especially for a period as complicated as the Napoleonic!
Will you be keeping an eye out for more on Absolute Emperor?

To me these “grand tactical” games are more like a boardgame in mechanics and feel (so you may as well play a boardgame). When you’re not doing silly stuff like forming a square, and when your basic units are based on a square (and… Read more »
Yep, at this level of abstraction I would rather play Command and Colours.
This level is where I prefer my horse and musket games aimed at
The thing about big game’s is the time to set-up and space to play a game.
Osprey blue books tend to be quite concise and tight rulesets, so I’ll be interested to see what a corps level Napoleonic game looks like that fits within the blue book brief.
That’s a cracking bit of art work on the front cover, your eye is drawn to the mounted officer in his crisp uniform while all the chaos and action takes place around him. Very eye catching I’d pick it up off the shelf for a look if i was passing.
I’m happy to give these a go. I like all sorts of Napoleonic games and love Command and Colors but want to play without the hexmap and with miniatures so this looks perfect.
