Community Spotlight: Dweghom, Deathwatch & Daring Afghans!
November 18, 2020 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Dweghom Army by drakoniss
We start with some awesomeness from the #PathOfConquest as we look at the work by drakoniss on these super Dweghom miniatures! The focus behind this project has been on speed painting the army to keep up with the likes of Justin and John who have been tinkering with their own armies over the past few weeks.
First up, we have these awesome looking characters who are going to be leading the way into battle alongside the rest of the army. The ace look of the green armour here works really nicely alongside the fire and the big red beards! The shimmer of beetles was used as the inspiration here, and I think it works really nicely, especially across the gauntlets of the Hold Raegh.
The same look and feel of the army carry over into the rank and file infantry for the Dweghom. Here you can see more of the green on display which has then been highlighted with a splash of blue and that dark metal too.
This is then framed really nicely against those slate grey bases. It really makes the Dweghom stand out and I think this would be a super looking army to see displayed on the tabletop. Things then get even more impressive when you see these additions to his army!
These wild warriors have been painted to represent their fiery personalities and even though the technique here seems basic it has been done in just the right way I feel. I love the glowing fire running up their bodies as if it is being drawn from the embers of their very being.
It is well worth diving into the rest of the project linked above as there are a few more close-ups of the rest of the army and a look at how it finished up...for now!
Deathwatch Space Marines by foehammer888
We next turn to foehammer888 who has been showing off the work going into an ace Deathwatch Squad for use in the world of Warhammer 40,000. The focus here has been on building up a selection of interesting conversions which show off the unique nature of each Space Marine who finds himself fighting for the Deathwatch.
There are three Space Marines in the project so far with Pack Leader Leif taking the lead, a deadly Space Wolf with his power axe at the ready. It's really neat to see the various accessories of the Space Wolf adorning his belt and general armour and the pose is very fitting for one of his kind!
Next up, we have Veteran Brother Takai who is of the Rainbow Warriors. foehammer888 decided that this army would have a Native American feel, hence the feathers on the belt and the slightly more esoteric weapon.
This theming continues up across the arms and onto the back banner which completes the look. I think that the choice of a Reiver is a good one to suit the character too and you get the sense that this Space Marine is a very deadly individual!
Finally, we have another Deathwatch member who was built using Arabic warriors as an inspiration. This here is Veteran Brother Adham and he seems like another deadly individual who has been painted up exceptionally well.
The final look here was based upon the Consecrators who are one of the successor Chapters of the Dark Angels. foehammer887 has gone to great lengths to make sure that the model feels characterful and befitting of the universe, but with a twist.
foehammer888 is also looking for the community to feed into the project and suggest what other Deathwatch Space Marines he should work on next. If you have a cool Chapter in mind then make sure to include it in the comments above!
1880s Afghan Army by denzien
The final project that we're looking at for this week is a stunning collection of 1880s Afghans that denzien has been working on for battles during the Victorian period. This might be quite a fun project for Warren to check out considering his current level of interest in The Empire and its adventures!
The main focus of the most recent posts from denzien has been on building up a collection of quick and easy Afghan warriors for using in their games. A lot of the miniatures come from Perry Miniatures but a few personalities have popped up from Wargames Illustrated too.
For quick and easy paint jobs, I think these look superb and are packed with colour and definition. A majority of the miniatures have been painted using Contrast but with a few tweaks here and here depending on what's needed.
All of this feeds into an impressive looking army that can go up against a band of plucky British who have also been reworked and tweaked to match the new style of basing and painting.
This all seems like a good excuse to throw a bunch of miniatures onto the tabletop and play out a siege against overwhelming odds! As well as being a chance to paint up some evocative and different armies it also gave denzien a chance to explore the history of the period and why the British Empire was even there in the first place. This is what I like about Historical wargaming; that it offers up a chance to learn more about our past through hobby and play.
