Enter A World Of Nordic Horror With New Free League Books!
October 26, 2020 by brennon
Free League Publishing has two new additions to their roleplaying worlds this month ahead of a spooky Halloween! Both Vaesen and MÖRK BORG are getting supplements for you to use to enhance storytelling at the tabletop.
A Wicked Secret And Other Mysteries // Free League Publishing
The first of these books is A Wicked Secret And Other Mysteries for use alongside Vaesen. Inside this book you'll find all manner of interesting investigations for your characters to go on as they explore a cold and twisted Nordic landscape which straddles the line between fact and folklore. Here are the adventures within...
- The Silver of the Sea – The death of a preacher leads the characters to the rocky western archipelago, where something strange is afoot on Wrecker Isle.
- A Wicked Secret – Travel to the deep forests of northern Sweden and investigate rumours of a murderous beast in a remote village. What ancient evil lurks there?
- The Night Sow – Welcome to beautiful Mölle, a city by the sea, known to many as “the heart of sin” – and now also for cold-blooded murder.
- The Song of the Falling Star – A cursed child, a strange instrument and a desperate aristocrat. Travel to Arensburg on the island of Oesel and discover the horrible truth about what has happened there.
The world of Vaesen seems fascinating and after a flick through the book, I think I would love to actually play a game set within its world. It's such a nice change of pace from other games that include things that go bump in the night, set in an utterly bedazzling part of the world.
MÖRK BORG!
If you prefer your Fantasy weird and seriously messed up then you've also got the Feretory supplement for the world of MÖRK BORG.
MORK BORG CULT Feretory // Free League Publishing
This is all kinds of madness and takes you down into the depths of a seriously metal Fantasy world where everything feels like it should be played to some shredding guitars and heavy drums. There is a lot encased within this particular volume...
- The Monster Approaches... Create your own terrible foe with this monster generator. Determine appearance, behaviour, abilities, goal and strange habits for your new friend.
- Roads to Damnation. Simple rules for overland travel, including distances, road encounters, village types and destinations.
- Eat Prey Kill. Rules for hunting for food (or sport). Also 54 fully statted monsters, 6 for each major area of the dying world.
- The Death Ziggurat. A delve into the ruins of a lost temple city where something is awakening. A descent into undead madness. A Cosmic Necrocrawl at the end of time. The Death Ziggurat is a short adventure about postponing the inevitable.
- d100 Items & Trinkets. What can be scored in the darkest of cellars and the rucksacks of the fallen? Use this list of keepsakes and trinkets to find out.
- The Goblin Grinder. The streets of Galgenbeck are overrun with goblins, turning burgher and pauper alike into their own cursed kin. But not to worry! For a low cost, a local chemist can whip up a cure. Until the price rises anyway. Risks? Of course not, it's tested and guaranteed to work! A cursed urban slaughter-fest of an adventure about plagues, panic and profit.
- The Tenebrous Reliquary. A d66 table of terrible treasures. The Volt Thrower and the Plasmatic Idol. The Cauldron of Lies and the Zodiac Lung. Tyrant's Tongue and the Foehammer.
- The Grey Galth Inn. Welcome to this fine (ish) establishment in the bad part of Galgenbeck where you can eat, drink and hope to multiply your coins with a game of Three Dead Skulls.
- The Tablets of Ochre Obscurity. Ancient, sought-after clay tablets containing Powers that only the most enlightened mystic (or forlorn philosopher) can hope to wield.
- Four additional classes: The shapeshifting Cursed Skinwalker, the alien Pale One, the blasphemous Dead God's Prophet and the despondent Forlorn Philosopher.
- Dark Fort: Included in the zine is also the micro/solo dungeon crawling game DARK FORT and a couple of character sheets for that game.
If you want to expand upon the world of MÖRK BORG and give you a few more interesting ideas for sessions then this also feels like a no-brainer. As with all of the Fria Ligan line, this is another exceptional product which is dripping with tender love and care...and blood.
Everything they make seems to be just as impressive to have on your shelf as it is to play! It's hard to resist what they make!
Are you tempted?

sounds good mork borg sounds very diskworldy but it aint.
The world of Vaesen seems so wonderfully atmospheric. I’ve never really played role playing games – but from what you guys have been sharing of Vaesen over the last couple of months – the books are definitely going on my Christmas list.
Even if you don’t go for the RPG books, the original concept books by Johan Egerkranz are excellent presents: Norse Gods, Vaesen and The Undead. (Limited availability, but I’ve found them at Grimfrost – they even have some colouring books! (https://grimfrost.com/pages/search-results?q=egerkranz&type=product)
