While I blame the Matt Ward era (the infamous Calgar vs the Avatar scene) the issue existed before that. I started in 2nd edition and bought Codex Ultramarines. I loved the story of the Realm of Ultramar, of Guilliman and the Gauntlets, and all their Romanesque style. It was before I had read of any other Primarchs or knew the Heresy fluff (which I later read in Codex Titanicus).
Before that I’d been into WW2 airplanes and liked looking up colour schemes and acccurate markings, etc. and this book had all the same type of info, but for a fantasy world.
So I made a big trip into the Sydney store where Dave Taylor was working at the time (before becoming Oz WD editor). He asked what I played and I said ‘Ultramarines’ – then he and another other staff went, “Oooooh…” and chuckled.
So I asked ‘What?’ and they went quiet.
I finished shopping in silence and walked out… It’s never changed, just the reasons people give.
