Avalon Hill’s Revamped HeroQuest Now Available In The UK
October 9, 2020 by brennon
Avalon Hill's revamped version of Fantasy board game HeroQuest was previously only available in the US and Canada. Now it seems like those of us in the UK are now able to get their hands on the core game, its exclusive content and expansions thanks to Zavvi.
HeroQuest // Avalon Hill
This version of HeroQuest takes the classic game and simply gives it a new coat of paint. As well as new artwork you'll also find a selection of new plastic miniatures, terrain, dice and more which allow you to play through this grandfather of tabletop gaming.
HeroQuest Heroes // Avalon Hill
As part of the Avalon Hill and Hasbro Pulse project, you could get your hands on either the Heroic Tier option (the core game) or a Mythic Tier which introduces some new alternative versions of the classic heroes and two expansions as well. Zavvi is offering up THAT Mythic Tier option of HeroQuest as part of their pre-order period coming in at £149.99.
HeroQuest Pulse Heroes // Avalon Hill
So, if you saw the Pulse offering going live and then had your hopes dashed immediately by the fact that it wasn't available for those outside of the US, you now have a chance to get ahold of the game. If you missed out on the retro version of HeroQuest back in the day then you've now got a chance to dive in and give it a go!
HeroQuest Mythic Tier Expansions // Avalon Hill
Should Hasbro and Avalon Hill have expanded on the original and done something new mechanically with the game? Well, that's the bone of contention. A lot of people are (obviously) very happy that this classic version of the game is returning with the new miniatures and artwork. Others are not as impressed and would have preferred Avalon Hill to have tweaked the game a little to match modern tabletops.
Personally, I think this is a nice idea but I would have preferred to see them tweak it to hold up against the likes of Gloomhaven (or Jaws Of The Lion), Descent and the like. I am still holding out hope to see if Restoration Games do something new with the HeroQuest theme in the next few years.
Are you tempted by HeroQuest now it's available in the UK?

Flocking sprue-eaters….
you’re out of luck @brennon Restoration Games admitted the week before Hasbro began their money grab that they weren’t going forward with it. Their statement was something to the effect that once they started looking into the licensing issues it was so complicated that it wasn’t worth their while pursuing.
Alas 🙁
Currently “$1,935,868 Pledged” – they still struggle to make the last stretch goal… Did they burn the potential buyers or is there simply not the market for it?
Given that this game seems priced on par with similar kickstarer and non-kickstarter games i’m not sure it can be described as a ‘money grab’. What about this is such bad value for money? Just because Hasbro are a BIG company with deep pockets doesn’t mean they were ever going to just throw money at such a niche product in the hopes of making bank. Using an in house pre-order system seems sensible. It may be that within Hasbro there is a small group of game enthusiasts who would love to bring back a load of the old classics. I… Read more »
f#*k them, they weren’t going to consider a release outside NA until they got slapped on social media and now they’re expanding to a few additional markets but at the top tier only.
Had this discussion on Facebook, I really don’t see the point in this game. As a game it isn’t that good. It was fun when I was 12 but when I was 12 anything that involved dwarves and barbarians smashing monsters would be fun. It wasn’t fun because it was a good game, it was fun because I was 12. The rules don’t compare with modern Dungeon Crawlers. In terms of nostalgia it has no more nostalgia than Dungeon Saga. It’s NOT the original Heroquest, it’s a re-release. For full heroquest nostalgia I would still need to go on ebay… Read more »
That is not at all what they said. They said they were not working on the game and had nothing to do with Hasbro. At the same time, they have an application at the US Copyright office to use the name “Hero Quest Legacies” — They are not going to go through the trouble to pay legal counsel to apply for the application and the other follow on work until they plan to do something.
More to the case, until they have acquired the copyright license, they are not going to say anything.
that is exactly what they said, in fact if you want to go further here is the complete quote
“To clear things up: We are not affiliated with Hasbro’s HeroQuest announcement, and we do not have any current plans for a HeroQuest game. We often file for trademarks on an intent-to-use basis (as this one was) as a very preliminary step. The timing just turned out very awkwardly with Hasbro’s subsequent announcement.”
Hasbro need crowfouundin? Seriously?
Anyway the box is cool, i miss a lot the brute face on barbarian (arnold? Where are you?) And 90s sword and sorccery movies style… but the minis are not bad, the mummy is very cool
Ant site where i can see all the monsters with detail?
On last way the fans can enjoy the game later the dioni robbery, i feel shame to be spanish because asshole like him who dirty attitude do it to us a thin favor
They don’t need it but essentially having the preorder open for about 5 or 6 weeks means they can garauntee a load of FOMO purchases that they might not have gotten so quickly otherwise if they just went for a general release.
Most of the time, established companies do this to prevent overproduction and underproduction.
If they make too many copies, they could turn a moderately successful game into a financial failure. On the other hand, if they produce too few, they end up leaving a ton of money on the table.
Let’s also add that no suit at Hasbro in their right mind would greenlight this project when so many others have a better *proven* ROI. Hobbyists seem to forget that $100+ is NOT a price families will pay for a boardgame. Far easier to license some property, stick Monopoly or Monopoly Go on it, and include prepainted mini’s that look melted blobs of glue.
This is not crowd-funding.
This is simply a glorified pre-order system disguised as a crowdfunding platform, because marketing trumps facts.
While Hasbro may have deep pockets … production is always risky.
This style of ‘pre-order’ / ‘crowdfunding’ ensures that they know they can make a profit before starting production, which makes it less of a gamble.
My fault then…thanks for the info
This seems like very interesting news, especially since in US and Canada the price was $149.99 and now in the UK you have to pay more for it. I will be interested in how much shipping will be if the prices that I have seen for Canada is anything to go by.
Shipping is £4.
Seriously I kid you not, so your paying an inflated cost but basically nothing on shipping.
Fascinating so that means that it is probably cheaper to get in UK than in Canada.
I feel sorry for those in Quebec and the other parts of the world not covered.
So not for rest of Europe? That’s not good. It’s almost like they don’t want money of as many people as possible. What kind of business does that. One that’s not smart that’s for sure. Then again on toy side Hasbro is known from making some toys exclusives for certain stores that you can only find in NA so it’s not like they aren’t known from this kind of stupidity.
Do Zavvi not ship to the EU, I honestly have no idea.
Probably, Hasbro doesn’t like to produce games in English for markets that don’t speak it as a first language.
I’d expect the game to eventually come out in various European languages, but it isn’t unlikely that the gender swapped heroes and other ‘exclusives’ won’t be available in those versions.
There are some European countries that don’t require translating games into they own language like some bigger ones do so there shouldn’t be issue with bringing it to those countries. For example these days we in Nordic countries always get English versions of everything.
Is that just for hobby games, or does that go for everything? Like, they don’t translate Monopoly into Danish?
Are there a lot of Hasbro games that aren’t translated? Like, do you guys play D&D from English books?
I mean, I know that there were Spanish, French, Dutch and German versions of HeroQuest back in the day, but the market has definitely changed a ton since then.
MMMMmmm 150 quid not bad but I’m out
I’ll stick to the original I have.
Sure, give Hasbro more proof that HQ “won’t sell” overseas. :/
No I think that they will still make a fortune from the game.
Umm, I’m not sure how to answer that. The price is very high and if I won’t buy it at that cost then that’s up to Hasbro, to be blunt.
Firstly they made it a crowdfunder rather than ‘we’re making this’, then it was US only until a buyer was found and now it’s £150.
If it doesn’t sell then the price is too high for the market. The product may not be the issue.
£150 foe the game plus two expansions isn’t that bad, depending on the content of the expansions of course.
Honestly,i am looking at it with a view to get it.I just have to get the fates to aline.
Not for me, I’ve already got a copy of the original. I think they should of at least updated the rules, they are awful.
Yeah, this is what got me. Those rules really only worked for us because we had never played a dungeon crawler before.
They seriously need to be updated.
Still not quite understanding the hysteria around Heroquest, enjoyed it as a kid but would not want to play it now, its a not a great game by any stretch. Learnt my lesson buying retro gaming machines, the games I used to love are awful to play now despite me having the greatest of memories!
> Still not quite understanding the hysteria around Heroquest
Nostalgia is stupidly strong amongst adults. Ironically, Hasbro uses it to sell their children’s games. A parent is more likely to buy a game they had as a child than a new one. That’s why it’s so tough for new *unlicensed* games to enter the market.
Back where it began.
For £150 you can get the main game and both the expansions from ebay now rather than waiting for the preorder.
For £140 you can get Dungeon Saga and two expansions from a choice of 4. It’s also got better rules.
It is, I backed this like made when the KS came out.
Dungeon Saga > Heroquest (IMO) in almost every way.
I mean… Nah.
Had Heroquest as a child and it was fun, but I really don’t see what the fuss is about bringing it back. Just because I had fun with it as a child doesn’t mean I would rush out to get it now. There is some much more choice, and probably better things around now.
As to Hasbro crowd funding a pre-order says a lot about how they see this. There is no reason why they can’t finance and take this to retail. They have put out games around this price level over the past years.
a friend of mine has postulated that the region lock has nothing to do with the licensing but rather they couldn’t be arsed to work out logistics that’s why it was just NA to throw it in the regular mail
Reaper Miniatures said they had to spend the same amount of time filling out paperwork for each country, regardless of the amount of orders. Over the span of three days, would you rather send out 300 orders or 3?
for Reaper sure, for Hasbro with a multi Billion dollar company I don’t think they’re hand writing any notes and also having to produce the miniatures and pack them with the same team of 12 people.
I heard that the region lock is something to do with their Pulse crowd funding platform not being legal in Europe. Not an expert of accounting though so I can’t really give you any more than that I afraid
I can’t see how that works since there are several crowdfunding platforms. I suppose it could be something, but I really can’t see how.
Never rule anything out where accountants and taxes are concerned…
£150 for a board game and a couple of expansions does seem a bit over the top
I’ve paid more for better games
Really? Seems on par with other similar games, and at least you know what you are getting with this game. Mythic have been churning out expensive duds for a while and people seem fine with that.
It’s only £10 more than Dungeon Saga
it’s £40 more than dungeon saga, unless you’re talking about the £150 pledge in which case that’s dungeon saga with £90 worth of expansions on top
Yeah, I meant the £150 pledge was only £10 more than an equivalent amount Dungeon Saga. On Zavvi there’s only a £150 pledge as far as I know, unless they have added a new option since I checked, which is entirely possible. I haven’t really looked into this with any great interest; I wasn’t entirely sold on the game before the official announcement, I was even less interested when they decided to treat UK and Europe as an afterthought. But purely based on price it seems like it might be comparable to Dungeon Saga. However I currently own Dungeon Saga… Read more »
I’m sticking with DS myself and I just got a box full of minis from Zealot if I want to be fancy with my Saga
I am more than happy with the miniatures from the Dungeon Saga box to be honest. They might have needed a bit of work straightening out bent weapons. The priestess miniatures might look a bit butch. But I love them just as they are, wouldn’t change a thing. Dungeon Saga is probably the only game to date foe which I have painted everything I own. Apart from the extra expansion they released along with the Kings of War campaign a couple of years ago. Imperial Assault got close, then I had an accident and bought a load more
Second only to actually creating something new, this is the best use of crowdfunding that we could ask for. Making niche products for those who what them across a wide market is brilliant. Many of these items would never reach production. Those that want them (and are willing to pay the price) win. No one loses (except those that want them and aren’t willing to pay ‘the price’). Now that doesn’t explain why they wouldn’t open the market as wide as they possibly could. They certainly aren’t cutting anyone slack on the shipping (and yeah, it looks like they are… Read more »
> Not a fan of Hasbro anyway, despite their ownership of one of my favourite games (Axis and Allies). Cardboard components and boxes are the crappiest quality i’ve seen anywhere.
And now apply that to HQ if it were retail. Everyone’s complaining about crowdfunding HQ, but they evidently don’t remember the s**t plastic from Magic: The Arena or cheap cardstock for that game and the D&D Adventure Systems games.
s**t = soft 😛
If it was £50 i buy it, even that its rules are very ligh etc… they hit the 2 million mark, 2 more orcs, 2 new zombies etc… pointless, but a couple of new heroes… not sure how they play… big pass for me…
Think i’ll stick with Dungeon Saga… have my childhood copy of HQ to dig out if I really fancy it
I have Dungeon Saga, Descent 2, Castle Ravenloft and Journeys in Middle Earth. Dungeon Saga mechanics didn’t impress me. Descent 2 was ok, but I never really got far into running it. I bought it for solo play and was disappointed, even after the app version was released. Castle Ravenloft is limited replay and having the characters resetting to level one after each adventure was disappointing. By far I would say that Journeys is the best of them. Solo mode is very good and the game is challenging. By the time you complete the campaign you feel that you have… Read more »
Didn’t get on with Decent 2 at all. Never played Journeys in Middle Earth, will have to look it up.
As much as I’d love to go in for this (if nothing else to play with my niece & nephew when they are a bit older), after topping up my Conan the Conquerer and Battletech: Clan Invasion pledges my last remaining crowdfunding pennies for this year are reserved for the next Core Space campaign.
Plus Hasbro’s use of their Pulse format to fund this, as well as their usual dismissal of non North American markets, leaves a bad taste.
