I do like the minis and concept of the original version, so we’ll have to wait and see what this variant will bring to the table.
October 8, 2020 at 5:38 am #1572952Mythic and Monolith are entirely separate companies now, wasn’t Hel from Leo and Mythic ? Monolith took on MB:Pantheon from them and this is the follow up that can be played on its own or played against MB:P ? It’s just taken a long time to get here.
October 8, 2020 at 6:42 pm #1573180October 8, 2020 at 11:31 pm #1573233Mythic Battles Pantheon was originally a collaboration between Mythic Games and Monolith which was eventually acquired in whole by Monolith. This happened around the time that MB:P 1.0 was being fulfilled and delivered if I recall. However Monolith have not been without their share of troubles of late.
That said I won’t deny a small amount of anticipation for Ragnarok, not least because in each game they tease the next one in the series. They always said they planned 3 Mythic Battles games and whilst Vikings are ok (not as cool as ancient greeks I hasten to add), I am curious to see where they might take the game next.
October 9, 2020 at 5:31 am #1573246If,if they follow the fan wishes,it may well be Ancient Egyptian ? But finding out is a long ways off yet,so i’ll be happy for this coming campaign to go smoothly.
October 9, 2020 at 12:40 pm #1573351Egypt was next on the slate. Think that is still the case-
October 9, 2020 at 7:22 pm #1573392October 9, 2020 at 9:01 pm #1573406Greek sand Egyptians … those were the big mythic pantheons of ancient history.
In theory there’s the Romans as well.
And of course everyone loves vikings these days …It will be interesting to see where this goes next.
However I feel that too much focus on the competitive aspect could lead them in the same trouble that Guildball had near its final season.October 10, 2020 at 3:46 pm #1573515The problem with Egypt is that it doesn’t really have the same legendary heroes or monsters as Norse and Greco Roman. It’s got some cool Gods but I don’t think it’s quite as rich in terms of its myths and legends. The closest I think they get to legendary figures would be the Pharaohs.
I think perhaps looking to the far east might be a more interesting option, although while not short on legendary characters or monsters, they tend to be a little more lacking in deities. But Mythic Battles: Samurai…
Finding out probably isn’t as far off as you think though. Fairly sure they teased Ragnarok at the end of the MB:P funding campaign.
Let’s also not forget Age of Empires: Mythologies (the mythological version of the Age of Empires video game). Which has thus far been followed by Mythic Battles.
October 10, 2020 at 3:50 pm #1573516@limburger It was always designed for competitive play from the outset, however don’t think it will ever go the way of Guildball – it’s not going to retail so it’s not likely to ever have ongoing support beyond the kickstarter and the inevitable v1. 5 kickstarter
October 11, 2020 at 9:58 am #1573634@limburger the Roman pantheon was really just the Greek with a new lick of paint. @onlyonepinman makes a good point as well that Egyptian mythology does not really feature much in the way of the heroic mortals & demigods that keep folks coming back to the Greco-Roman myths.
I wonder if when they get past Ragnarok that Monolith may have to get creative – I wonder if they may end up having to do Egypt as a much smaller expansion, but could be just one of several smaller projects. I’m thinking a conversion kit for Rome, maybe featuring minis of the more obviously Roman elements, a set for Mesopotamia perhaps? Or maybe something for the Celtic mythos? Otherwise they would need to look much farther a field – Japan, China and India are rich veins to draw from, but there’s a lot of material that could be drawn from the Meso-American mythologies as well. To say nothing of the myths of Polynesian people, and sub-Saharan Africa.
Certainly I reckon if Monolith want to keep the game fresh, competitive, and (eventually) actually brought to retail, they could do worse than look at smaller more focused releases for Pantheons less well known to western audiences…October 11, 2020 at 12:13 pm #1573664I hadn’t heard about half the things in MB:P before that kickstarter.
And I barely know anything beyond Thor and Loki from the Vikings. As such I wouldn’t know how many gods and myths the Egyptians really had.
IIRC Stargate mined the Egyptian myths for quite a few names of their enemies.Romans may be a re-skin of the Greeks, but I suspect that there’s enough wiggle room to make it unique.
@onlyonepinman they would have to do something retail related if they want to make it a competitive game, because those things need fresh blood to survive. I suspect the split between monolith/mythic and now the event has probably killed any momentum the game had as well, so they may have to re-think that aspect with Ragnarok.
I also wonder if forcing both games to be compatible is the way to go. There may be things that are so thematically unique to Ragnarok or MB:P that it would mean sacrificing the few things that would make it worth buying.
