Community Spotlight: Super Mutants, Flamboyant Fritz, & Clever Camouflage
October 7, 2020 by avernos
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Fallout Mutants by Ugleb
This week we start in the middle of a blasted post-apocalyptic landscape, and I'm not talking about the UK post Brexit. Instead we're basking in the radioactive green glow of the Super Mutant Starter set for Wasteland Warfare by Ugleb.
They are certainly not going to be missed in the night with a super punchy sickly yellow-green making them look like the Hulks Hillbilly cousins. Ugleb has done a fantastic job in getting a real vibrancy to the flesh tones which is in stark contrast with the weathered metal scraps that adorn their bodies as armour.
He even scored additional internet points with a couple of doggos, which I believe is the next best thing to cats. The muscles on these slobbering beasts is harshly defined with those recesses almost shading into black and make them stand out beautifully. It's great to see Ugleb back on this project after a hiatus and with two gangs in as many months I can't wait to see what comes next.
Moonstone Madness by Joshtogo
I have no right to claim credit for these, but that's never stopped me before. So a few weeks ago we featured Moonstone on the Indie of the Week and low and behold Josh dusts off his collection and finally gets to painting them. So no need to thank me for the gorgeous work that is coming up, I will accept payment in lieu of thanks.
Fritz is a flamboyant fellow any way with the slashed silk and poofy sleeves and Joshtogo has gone the extra mile, some wonderful painting alongside a lovely simple basing scheme and a white studded codpiece that you are now looking at aren't you? The painting wasn't the only thing to catch my eye in this project though.
Josh has used some tips from Soapdodger and has gotten more involved into the photography. Building a scene inside a lightbox and learning how to manipulate the settings to really bring home the wonderful work he has done on these figures. I have been thinking a lot about photography myself recently and while it's hard to achieve on the perfection of a Gerry-Shot there is always something to learn.
212th Recon by Fleboy
Our last entry for this week is an unusual colour scheme for an unusual set of Clone troopers. Fleboy has printed out a set of miniatures to represent the 212th Recon a group that appeared in the Clone Wars cartoon. Once he had the correct armour and equipment he could then set to work putting together their distinctive camouflage for scouting on the red desert planet.
The contrast between the reddish armour and those super striking accent colours with the yellow markings and the black unitard bodysuit make for a fantastic looking squad that is probably one of the most unique colour schemes you are ever likely to see on a Legion tabletop.
The other thing I love about this project is that it's a one and done affair. Often we see big projects with tons of entries and hundreds of likes to go with them. This one came onto my radar, not even double figures but Completed. A very focused Project to show people how to recreate a specific scheme. Add to that the detail on where he got the 3D print files from and you can follow along at home if you have the mind to. Now I want to see another project that has them completed based and on a table with a full army around them.

I’m a big fan of Fallout and the Super Mutants and their oversize doggo’s look great.I know absolutely nothing about Moonstone, the miniature’s give me a Labyrinth type feeling about them. Most feelings go towards the 212th recon Legion troops,i have yet to dive into the Clone Wars era with Legion ( i got a little scared reading about the building difficulty involved ),but will inevitably go back and re-watch the tv show sooner rather than later.
Excellent work all round. I especially love the empty bases in the bottom project ?
