John is in the studio to talk about tanks. Nothing but glorious tanks because infantry makes no special guest appearance in this box. Between the two cold war giants, players are getting a whole host of heavy armour goodness with the special highlight perhaps being the T-80. However, is this the best starter set that Battlefront Miniatures have produced?
Is there are a more beautiful tank than the T-80? The T-101 perhaps...?

That’s a nice touch that the objective markers have been built into the lid. Great looking starter box and thanks for the unboxing ?
I want to put a 15mm scale Arnold S. in there… “that’s a T-100” XD
I can’t believe that they made John, of all people, review this kit. I can’t imagine why they would subject him to something so very uninteresting to him… 😛
I think that some infantry would have been ideal for this starter set (pretty much as John pointed out), daft thing is there’s already plastic infantry out already for TY. HOWEVER I think the decision on contents is merely catering to what the playerbase wants (they don’t want infantry in the game). Team Yankee seems to have evolved to a “Armageddon” version of Tanks, the playerbase just isn’t interested in the combined arms aspect and just wants to play with tanks. It’s a shame it’s evolved that way, but although Battlefront may not have wanted the game to evolve the… Read more »
I agree that adding a platoon of infantry on either side would move this from a good starter set to a great one like hit the beach.
I kind of like the inclusion of the Pattons and the T-64’s, it gives some less advanced armour to each side which for a starter set i thinks a great idea, as it mixes up the options a bit for beginner players to learn how to deal with different threats and might get some interest in units other than the latest and greatest.
Well I was all for keeping the timeline to the mid 80s, but they’ve already did that with Team Tankee and the playerbase were demanding the latest and greatest from Battlefront. Mid 80s is the better era as it’s before the advent of widespread thermal imaging (for the NATO stuff), and the tank technology isn’t too far apart (that happens as you advance the timeline). Ideally you’d have US troops in M113s and possibly a scout troop of Bradleys and the 105mm armed M1s. For the Soviets BMP1s for the APC and possibly BMP2s as the scout squadron and the… Read more »
Loving the look of this, will be a nice add to my existing mix of Guard armoured and VDV force. With more VDV incoming from a Kickstarter any day, I will be very infantry heavy @johnlyons, with the choice of BMDs, BTR80s or BMP2s for land movement, or a Eight Hinds to airlift units forward. Full combined ops is the only way forward and bugger the fact it’s not competitive, IT LOOKS FRICK’N AWESOME!!!
a great looking set strait from the box.
Spot on review John, nice points on infantry, nice box but infantry would have made it superb.
I’ve built a UK Infantry Company and the equivalent of Soviets. In fact I want to do an infantry and IFV only game.
My set should be arriving soon.. it’s a great looking set I would have preferred though they had supplied one legal formation for each side … so the pattons and t64 should have been abrams and more t80s that way new players are getting a fully fledged force , or as others have said infantry along side the tanks..
Online people seam to swear by infantry for this game maybe battlefront don’t want to commit to it… though German paratroopers next year so times maybe changing…..
Just ordered my set. A few questions:
1. I understand it correctly that the tokens have to be cut out, not pushed out.
2. The faction book for East German forces is no longer available? Old faction books are fully compatible with the (new?) rulebook?
3. Shall I buy the books for the factions or am I good with the cards alone?
They are doing a new soviet warpac book next year I think that will have the new East German list in, not sure if the cards are still available for them … the books are great fro fluff ( and cost just over a tenner) and have the rules for all models in but just buying the units gets you the unit cards so don’t need the books.
Loving the box set, and yes they could of put infantry in, but as of yet they only do TY troops in metal. Hoping they do them in plastic soon, as you get better detail and there more of a joy to paint than metal. I have the British already, and this box set will be a great addition.
