My plan was simple.
I had two weeks of holiday … plenty of time to dig into my pile of unfinished projects and continue work OR start a new project idea.
However as I kind of predicted … nothing got done.
I did get to blame the insane level of tropical heat during week 1, but that didn’t explain my lack of hobby this week
And with me seeing the new Soviet stuff for Bagration I *eh* kind of see my next new project already.
Anyways … onto this weeks attempt at pledging that I really shall open my box of Indomitus and do something.
(1) It’s GamesCom time. Do you care?
I had the Google the name … I guess it is the European version of the E3 ?
(2) Have you been to GamesCom?
See (1). The problem with (videogame) conventions is that (a) the internet has effectively made them worthless and (b) I haven’t seen an original game being announced in decades. Even the ‘new’ consoles get sequels to existing games and practically zero new content. If it hadn’t been for Rockband/Guitar hero I wouldn’t have an Xbox One in this gen.
I probably may buy a PS5 because it supposedly is compatible with my current PSVR and it really could use the extra horses in those games. However as VR has kind of failed to produce the killer app that can sell the 1000$+ kit that pc’s can use I doubt I will upgrade to a PS5 if that is the only thing they’ve got.
(3) What video games are your thing? (If at all)
I own all 3 current consoles … and a pc with a spanking new almost top tier graphics card
So yeah I could say video games are my thing.
I however do not have a favourite one. I’ll play almost any genre or style at least once.
Open world is my preferred genre, provided it isn’t full of busy work and at least tries something different.
Which is why I kind of liked Far Cry 2 and 3, but never got into the sequels as the design was more like a re-theming with zero innovations. However after having finished (the ‘story’) in Just Cause 4 I have to say that some developers seem to fail to understand the difference between ‘fun’ and ‘busy work’. Never mind those infuriating ‘escort’ and ‘defense’ missions where you have to defend a friendly object/npc from a seemingly endless assault by enemies. I’m glad JC4 was ‘free’ …
Currently looking forward to the release of Cyberpunk 2077 … and given that the 3 core character classes have their own unique intro mission I will play it at least 3 times. Not sure if I will complete the entire game though. As much as I loved ‘The Witcher’-series I didn’t finish those games either. They’re just too big …
It’s kind of why I loved Horizon Zero Dawn. It was big, but not Skyrim sized. The best thing is that it even the few ‘collect X things’ sidemissions it had felt like they could be done as you only had to collect a dozen and the in-game map at least showed where you needed to be and the only collect-a-thon worth doing also granted you equipment that made it worth it (as it effectively made the final mission survivable).
Unlike Just Cause 4 that has you hunt for ‘ancient statues’ with no clues as well as hundreds of ‘speed stunts’ and all sorts of idiocy with no reward …
Tip : Epic Games store has the reboot of Hitman for free … this was originally an episodic release, but now you can get all of it as a single game like it was meant to be. It also has a near perfect length. Don’t worry about the DLC missions like ‘Patient Zero’. The idea is cool, but the maps/missions themselves are a bit ‘meh’ compared to the main game.
Anyways … that’s my ranting done.
Did I mention I’m playing Borderlands prequel ?
