Fantasy Flight Go Bigger & Better With Star Wars Armada
August 8, 2014 by brennon
Fantasy Flight Games were never going to build a full X-Wing scale Imperial Capital Ship mainly because it would be stupidly big. However they did come up with another idea. Star Wars: Armada...
Capital Ship takes on Capital Ship in this version of the X-Wing Miniatures Game where the emphasis switches from tight dogfights to big battleship engagements where mighty batteries of lasers are blasting holes into the hulls of other ships and whole squadrons of TIE fighters and X-Wings are blown away in an instant.
Packed with speed charts, new ways of moving ships and of course firing the damn things this looks like a perfect companion for someone who is utterly taken with the world of Star Wars and X-Wing in particular.
What do you think?

I think it’s awesome!
To many games, too little time.
Great idea. I think it’s better to separate both scales. Ouch… My wallet already hurts. 😉
This is just not fare… I can’t even keep up with X-wing.
I’m sold! When does it come out?
I’m sold! When does it come out?
The website needs more details.
Just says early 2015 and its FFG – when it turns up is their normal release date. Great stuff though
Not sure what happened there ^
They’re heading for the medial frigate
People who take all my money are so annoying.
Impressive, most impressive…but was hoping for Battle of Hoth
That is actually a very cool idea, and the quality looks pretty good for such small ships. I’d also assume due to the scale they also wont cost too much.
Great idea, very interested in this.
Didnt somebody try this before I remeber a starter box with a stardestroyer and a mon cal cruiser cant remember the manufactutrer
Yup that would be Star Wars Starship Battles from WotC, a short-lived offshoot of their pre-painted Star Wars miniatures game. I can’t comment on the quality of the game rules as I honestly never bothered to read them but the miniatures themselves were pretty good. Not FFG good of course, but for the price of a single fighter pack in X-Wing you could buy a boster of ~8 ships and that would include something like a Star Destroyer as well as some fighters or escorts. Besides the blind-buy nature of the boosters, the only problem the minis suffered from was… Read more »
Rules for it where abysmal – and scale was all shot to hell. Still have the minis and most are pretty nice – but the bendy nose star destroyer was not good. We tried about 5 times and could never win with the alliance – only way we could see to do it was the massively restrict Imperial fleet.
These look even on first glance to be a much more solid rules set
Wait. Wizards of the Coast and Wizkids got together and made a shoddy game? And it was based on a popular licensed property that could practically sell itself? I can’t imagine such a universe. HOW DO WE CLOSE THIS TERRIFYING RIFT IN SPACETIME!?!? Seriously though, this looks like the fleet battle game Attack Wing should have been. Take the useful ideas from X-Wing, but replace the rest with a system that makes sense at this scale of conflict. Will this end up being a whole new product line like X-Wing is, with new ship releases coming later? Or is this… Read more »
@mpopke – lol
I believe it will be expanded as I think there was some mention of expansion. Seems logical and willing to be we will see full size Star Destroyers and Mon Calmari cruisers etc.
Sort the scale issue of the CR90 and I’m in!
The only problem that I can see with this, is who on earth would want to play Rebels? Mon Cal cruisers or Star Destroyers? Not really a tough choice. X-wing doesn’t suffer from that problem as both factions have cool ships.
Will both sides get access to the Nebulon B and the CR90?
Regardless of all that, I’m definitely going to get an ISD when it’s released – just for the model.
I initially thought the scale was all over the place but it looks actually pretty close.
The Imperial Star Destroyer shown here is the Victory II which is about half the size of the Imperial class from the movies.
And they even gave it the funky layered wedges on the sides of the hull hat made Vics so distinctive in the X-Wing & TIE Fighter series 🙂
Yeah, VSD (both I and II) are about 900m long, whilst the ISD (again, both I and II) are 1,600m long, so the Nebulon B looks fine next to the VSD.
It’s just that darned corvette; it’s supposed to be 150m long – half the length of the frigate, so that is way off.
No idea why this is bugging me so much, maybe I’m just used to Fantasy Flight being spot on with these things (unless they have a particular reason to fudge the scale).
Shut up and take my money.
When I first came across this late last night I have to admit a little bit of wee came out.
looks awesome and well thought out, even has buttons to press to indicate whether the ships have activated or not. Text says early 2015 for release.
The small scale issues doesnt bother me at all, as it makes the game look more interesting. Otherwise corvettes would look tiny.
And the Mon Cal cruiser is an excellent ship, more then capable to go one on one with a star destroyer.
Plus the rebels have access to much better fighter squadrons. If they manage to match the firepower of a full squadron launching proton torpedoes, then “trench running disease” will be a real threat to the empire.
I cant wait to play.
Ok fine…. I’ll start working it into the budget now
I saw on FFG’s website and I just have visions of more and bigger ships…
No doubt there will be teenyweeny squadrons of all the fighters we have in X-Wing and I can see the opportunity to create crossover campaigns and battles where the fighter furballs in Armada could be resolved instead by switching to X-Wing and feeding that result into the ongoing Armada battle.
I wonder where I could get a big plastic sphere and a lot of grey paint…
This looks amazing and may convert me back into a gamer (as opposed to painter/modeller). Look at that box art! So cool.
Time to sell a kidney. gotta get me some of that. 😀
Take my wallet and go fantasy flight. You are ruining my savings plans
More than a little excited, early 2015 – so saving and possibly new job time 😛
Sold!
that is soooooo cool
So the “Big” ship for this will be the Executor? 🙂
I’ll be picking this up for sure. I love the way they did the fighter squadrons (similar to how squadrons were done in the Axis & Allies Naval Miniatures game).
