Warhammer Supply Drops – Will You Be Picking One Up?
August 6, 2020 by brennon
Games Workshop recently put forth a new idea (well, an old idea but new for them). You can now pick up Warhammer Supply Drops every-so-often from their webstore which are themed to a specific range and give you a discount based on buying the kits and accessories individually.

Currently, the first ones they have done for both the Imperium and Warhammer Underworlds are both sold out (no surprise there). Coming in at £75 each you've got to imagine that they include a fair few miniatures but also maybe paints and other accessories too. Either way, they have assured folks that whatever you get in the set will be focused towards the game in question.

Whilst it seems like many folks have missed out this time I would imagine we're going to be seeing more of these pop up each month. It seems like a good way for Games Workshop to get rid of some stock that they don't really want to hold onto anymore but I will reserve judgement until I see someone crack it open and have a look at what's inside.

As they mention in their article for this, perhaps this will be the way that you get started on a new army or warband? If you're already a big collector of any of their games then this might not be exactly what you need but it might give you a chance to paint up something different or maybe send off some figures to a friend.
Are you tempted by this idea from Games Workshop and did you manage to get hold of a Supply Drop?

We are not going to get supply drops in the USA, at least for now. But, please, someone out there who does get one show us what you got! I’d love to see. If they did offer it in the USA I would certainly be ordering.
Not for me. The plastic pile is shameful enough as it is.
Correction: the AoS box was £65 (but is still sold out)
And I think it’s madness…. that much money for a blind bag of potential crap? Nope!
That they sold out tells me everything I need to know about GW fans.
No matter the game, there will always be a certain percentage of fans that are Fanatical about it. Thats where we get the word fan from after, fanatic. The percentage is roughly the same regardless of the game, or so I believe. Call that a geek constant. So nothing new there. So, the larger the population of fans… the larger the population of fanatics. Simply math at its basics and the obvious fact that GW has the largest population of any Tabletop Wargame, means they also have the largest population of wargame fanatics. I assume GW knows this all too… Read more »
“Why do you think the always run out of these “special” runs out so fast”
Because they don’t charge enough for them – Indomitus would probably would still have sold well at £140 or £150.
@Robert
The last thing GW needs to do is charge more, in my opinion.
Indomitus was priced just right for me, it cost me $220 US shipped and that was plenty more then enough. No way was I paying more then that, considering the box contents.
I think the bean counters at GW have spent many hours calculating the correct price point to get money from the whales whilst also keeping enough new people coming in to the hobby.
The fact that demand completely outstripped supply strongly suggests they got the pricing wrong, it really is simple economics.
Depends on who’s buying it, I suppose. The box is obviously not for someone building an army (which would be most of their audience) but I guess there are miniature enthusiasts who may be curious what GW has to offer (including paints), not looking for a specific model, and assume these blind bags are worth more than their MSRP.
Will be interesting to see what people actually get. Don’t think they will ever match Mantic’s crazy boxes though in terms of value.
Peckham Spring Water anyone?
Mantic does something similar every year around black Friday or Christmas, if memory serves. Ive bought those in the past. The value was really good, but even so you always end up with roughly a third of it being stuff you will never have any real use for and another third of it being only semi useful or potentially usable. With mantic the prices where always really low, so there wasnt really any chance in losing money. However, with GW, Im sure the prices will be far to high to “risk” it. Also with the Mantic themed boxes would be… Read more »
This may be good if they bring some special offers on old figures down the road if they sell many boxes.
I liked the idea of the Underworlds bundle, and would definitely keep an eye open if they did another one for one of their other specialist games.
Sold out within 24 hours! Wonder if your consumer rights still exist and what happens if you don’t like the contents and want to return for a refund? Or do GW simply want to help fuel the eBay dealers?
I doubt consumer rights come in once it’s listed as a blind purchase. Same idea as buying a booster pack for a CCG.
Reminds me of lucky dip at school Christmas parties and if you don’t get what you want you may continue to gamble and spend more than you intended. It’s a hook to capture more customers – understandable marketing tool, but I’d rather limited run BOGOFs than mystery boxes. I’d still be interested to see exactly what you get if anyone can report in later and so I’ll reserve judgement on whether this is a gimmick or actual value for money.
Sorry I missed out on these. I collect a few 40k armies so there was a good chance I could use whatever I got. Even if I got something random it could have been used for a Kill Team, pillaged for conversion parts or chucked onto a hobby trading page if I really didn’t need it. I’ll keep an eye out for the next ones.
The imperium one was sold out within an hour of getting the email announcing it, I have no idea how many there were. I would have given that a go if they had one.
I managed to score the Imperium supply drop in Australia. I was actually avoiding work, decided to check out Warhammer Community, saw the news probably within the minute it dropped, saw it on the UK store, found it on the Aus store. Bought. The following content has been confirmed on Dakka, but noting that each region is different. Imperium Supply Drop (Italy) – Sallies Adrax Agatone – DA Master Lazarus – BA Mephiston – SoB Arco-flagellants – WS Korsarro Khan – SW Fenrisian Wolves – SM Bikes Underworlds Supply Drop (Italy I believe) – Beastgrave Champions of Dreadfane – Nightvault… Read more »
I’ve also seen people state the UK Imperium box was all IG – Baneblade, Cadian Command, Cadian Heavy Weapons, Commissar. If it’s the ‘Officio Prefectus Commissar’, then that’s 150GBP on the mark (double the 75 price tag), but falls short for the Aussie one (Sold at $225, will have $450 of value) with this only totaling $302. Also, the above IG box goes against the premise as we know it, that it’s not a starting point for an army, it’s a wide variety of faction content to trial out starting different armies, or bits box content, or painting practice. All… Read more »
