A Flames Of War Great War Battle Report!
August 7, 2014 by brennon
Flames of War are currently in the process of exploring The Great War and recently they put together a Battle Report showing off both Biltz's Battlegroup and Mitchell's Marauders which have come out in tandem with a recent supplement via Wargames Illustrated allowing you to play with these World War I sides. See how it worked out above!
Above are the two boxed forces involved and here are a few actions shots of things going down in the Trenches as Germans and British forces collide outside a nearby town.
The battling looks as fierce as it would have been during the time period and also no slouch when compared to the more mobile fighting and warfare of World War II that we're used to seeing. Have you been tempted by The Great War and will you be trying your hand at commanding either of these forces?
Give it a watch and let us know!
How did you make the on fire markers when the tanks were knocked out?
what a joke, they can make a WW2 game with car park sized tank battles but when it comes to playing WW1 they come up with this crap??? Playing a “BIG PUSH” scenario with 2 rifle platoons a side? Playing in one small corner of the table, ending up with a piece of unoccupied trench line that the recycled platoon pretty much just walks into? Single field guns being brought forward to the trench line when under attack? Tanks being parked just off the table so they can move up at a moments notice as reinforcements? Yes, that’s the mental… Read more »
It is pretty obvious that they are showing off the two new boxed sets. No reason to start ripping your wiener off and getting all salty here. Calm down and let them come out with more stuff.
It does seem quite strange
It seemed a lot more like a skirmish game than most of the FOW FTW programs that we have seen. WWI had very few tanks but, it had huge infantry pushes and tons of artillery. I guess I was expecting the board to be both trench lines with the reserves coming up through the lines and a huge no mans land in between. This being just an appetizer to what will be possible with this rules set came up a bit short. Maybe Warren and Dave can bring us the soup course at the very least.
I think that it has great (no pun intended!) potential but, they have only just released a minute first range of miniatures for this range, and if you want to field a two huge armies as I intend to, you soon will be able to. The miniatures range and era rules are at their absolute commercial infancy, and I am sure will be heavily developed with multiple bigger lists. Even so you can field a good sized army with the two existing company lists. I would like to see later releases of French, Russians and Austro Hungarians.
I think that the new range is crying out for a Beasts of War battle report, naturally incorporating a certain Dr Who fan!
My problem I think, is that is seems based at the wrong level. A 2 platoon action in WW1 would be seen as nothing more than a recon or intelligence gathering exercise to find out the strength and unit identification of the trenches opposite, and that certainly wouldnt have included tanks. Any serious action wouldnt have been really done at anything less than regimental or brigade level, which is probably outside the scope of what FoW are aiming at
For just starting up a new range of models, army lists and period this is a great first step. What has been offered gives the core of a new army at about what the Open Fire box gives you. Not many of us started our first army much bigger than this. It now depends on how Battlefront supports its growth. For now given the models available small fast games are just the thing. For those who can’t wait … don’t. The early war armies that are out there now are spilling over with WWI leftovers. Gas is just a barrage… Read more »
