Mantic Tease The Umbrella Academy Game On The Horizon
July 28, 2020 by brennon
Mantic Games are on a roll it seems when it comes to their comic book licenced games. Previewed this week, we got a first look at one of the miniatures from The Umbrella Academy game (we assume?) that is on the horizon.
The Umbrella Academy Teaser // Mantic Games
Number One, also known as Spaceboy was the first of the miniatures to pop up over on social media. As you will have no doubt already worked out, this is based on the comic book versions of these characters rather than the ones from the recent TV show.
We should, therefore, expect to see them work to match the rest of the characters from the comic books, some of which are pictured below.

As Mantic said on their social media "This is something different coming later in the year. We'll have more details soon". I would assume that we're going to potentially hear a bit more about what they have planned around GenCon or soon after.
It would be rather fun if this was a cooperative board game similar to the style of Hellboy. I must admit, I only really know The Umbrella Academy from the TV show so I'm unfamiliar as to how it would work in an investigation-style setting akin to Hellboy.
Either way, the miniatures themselves should be great to see come to life. We've seen some seriously good sculpts from Mantic Games for Hellboy and The Walking Dead in the past.
What do you think?

Seems kinda niche, but more power to ’em if it works out and sells a million. Seems like in 2020 you need to have a licensed product to make a big enough splash in the minis market to get eyeballs (outside of historicals, Kickstarter, and the ever-present GW stuff.)
I think Mantic have been doing a good job with their licenced games (Walking Dead, Hellboy) with some top sculpts and actually good products that play well as well as looking nice – I would imagine they are looking to capitalise on the success of the Netflix show putting it in people’s minds but I also like that they are working on it as a comic book adaptation rather than using the actors etc – SO much better.
Not to mention licensing the comic was likely considerably less expensive (and more available) than licensing the Netflix show.
Not as niche as you may think. The comic has a large cult following, particularly due to its creator being Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance. A board game version would have an audience outside the usual gaming market. Plus miniature painting is becoming quite a popular hobby in its own right.
I’m all in on this one. Kickstarter or otherwise. Love the series and the books.
I can see Warren getting the gorilla bot thingy for his Martian army?
I imagine this will use and expand the Hellboy mechanics, in which case, I’m in.
If not I’m in anyway.
I have heard of Umbrella Academy, but I didn’t know anything about the comic… after seeing this awesome sculpt, I binge read the comics, and I can honestly say it’s now one of my favourites, and I CAN’T WAIT for this to come out!!
