X-COM: The Board Game is coming from Fantasy Flight Games and puts you and your friends in the hot seat as the world is threatened by alien invasion!
The game will see you fighting off alien invasions by air and my land and of course doing things like researching new technology and keeping the world's countries happy as you teeter on the brink of all out panic.
You can play as the Commander who controls where the aircraft strike teams go, the Chief Scientist researching new tech and the weaknesses of the enemy, the Central Officer in charge of communications and conveying information to the team and finally the Squad Leader who will be making up the ground troops who head into contact with the alien menace.
Interestingly the game also comes with a digital app that helps run the game and provides you with not only the plans of the aliens but also your intel! You need the digital component of this game to play but it's free and runs off all kinds of devices including laptops and handheld phones and tablets.
Will you be taking control of your own X-COM team?

Holy moly! I had no idea about this until now – the app integration sounds amazing. Colour me VERY excited!
Couple this with a Deadzone variant to play out the battles and you’ve got a multi-level extraterrestrial mini/boardgame extravaganza to enjoy!
Thanks for reporting this Ben.
Interesting
Least you wont be scouring a level for hours looking for one little alien hiding in a corner like you did in Terror from the deep
This has got to be a good game! Can you imagine a computer game based on a board game mechanics being better than the actual board game with computer mechanics? I may just explode thinking this over. 🙂
Hmm, I’m not sure. On one level I like some of the games like this FF make, on another I reckon X-Com lends itself more to a minis game like Deadzone…
I thought the same thing… they are playing the meta game rather than the game itself… Mantic should do the adaptation since they already had a perfect system for it, maybe a partnership ?
Yeah, here I was thinking ‘there goes more money’ because the battles in XCOM are so much fun- I wasn’t expecting it to be the (IMHO) slightly boring bit in between battles.
It makes sense. Why bother trying to make a game about something the original game does so well? A tabletop wargame will never be as detailed as a computer one simply due to level of complication the computer can deal with and show on screen. Strategic co-op is something fairly unique from what I undertsand.
I love the games Old and New ! I hope this will be a good one.
I like how it’s not going to be just a table top skirmish game. Otherwise it would be redundant but this looks more interesting.
i don’t like the mandatory digital app requirement, i play boardgames to get away from a computer for a while, but i guess i’m just old fashioned that way.
it’s just that if i want some digital x-com i’ll play the video game instead.
I didnt read that bit, but I agree .I have a cheap mobile for emergencies and I certainly dont want a smartphone thing..Ah well guess they have lost a sale
I understand it, but it’s a co-op game from the sound of it. An app literally does away with the most tedious part- forcing some poor shmuck to be the bad guy while the other players get to play together. That’s as good an integration of an app with a boardgame as I can think of right now- not a gimmick, but actually solving an unpopular issue. And sure, some people don’t have a smartphone, tablet or even a computer to use it on, but let’s be honest, that group is by now small and growing ever smaller.
Well I do agree, But having one player play the baddie worked fine in Colditz 🙂
Me too. The need for an app is off putting to me.
I love XCOM, i hope they make miniatures for all the aliens.
cool 🙂 I wonder if this was in some way inspired by the Beasts Of War X-Com coverage ? 😉
Always loved the majority of the Xcom games, I’ll have to get this now for a sense of completeness
Any idea how much this may be ?
is it just me or is FFG just making every board game they can get their hands on?
Wow I love XCOM, wanting to see a playtest of this before buying. I would love a tactical miniatures game based of XCOM with all the great looking aliens.
