SAGA Crescent & Cross Release Is On The Horizon!
July 29, 2014 by brennon
Studio Tomahawk posted a rather neat look inside the new SAGA Crescent & Cross book this morning showing off the battleboards and such with a note saying 'It's Ready'. It's been a long wait and the Gripping Beast site is still waiting on it but it's somewhere on the horizon!
As you can see it's a rather plush looking product and a hardback to boot! I think the design looks nice and clean and I can't wait to try out a Crusader and Islamic army in this version of the rules. Talking of which they even have themed dice for both sides...
Keep a close eye on the Gripping Beast site and I'm sure you'll be able to get your hands on Crescent & Cross very soon indeed. If you've got your eye set on a copy what faction are you going to play?
God Wills It!

Be going for Saracens as my first SAGA army methinks
Aces @daemonkin79 – I’ve been looking at some of the previews and I think I might go European and see what I can make out of the FireForge range 😀
BoW Ben
Just put together a few boxes of Templar and Teutonic knights. They are outstanding figures, and the price is right. I found the spears a bit large, perhaps to make them more robust, but you can easily swap them out for metal ones. Now I’m drooling over the Mongols, which can be used in various capacities.
I was thinking the evil men from GW LoTR range as saracen cavalry and foot troops. Will chat with the Wee Gamers SAGA players and see what they suggest.
I would suggest GB’s new plastic Saracen Warriors as a good starting point
I want to see the Battleboards before I choose my first warband. I’m leaning toward Saracens at the moment though.
I’m trying not to get too excited, so until I see it on the GB website I shall endeavour to remain calm.
Hardback, very nice indeed.
@brennon –
Fireforge is the route to take. I just put together a massive Crusader force using Fireforge games plastics and it didn’t break the bank! My guess is that these are exactly what you want.
It is also going to depend on which Crusades are covered by the Battleboards. If its the first and maybe some of the second then you can get away with Normans for the basic troops types thus doubling up your SAGA potential
I’ve still to get any paint on my Saga Welsh (I will soon), but rather excited by this. Gripping Beast’s Arab infantry box looks a good start, but does anyone have any suggestions for cavalry?
Newline Designs do some Dark Age Arabs in 28mm and they have a 25% off sale at the moment. They might be ok for it
Gripping Beast of course do them
Oh and Old Glory do a largish range as well, but may be a bit smaller compared with figures being made today
the old Navigator range now with Magister Militum have a good range as well
Excellent. Thanks very much!
First Crusade you can also use the Fireforge Mongol cav for any engagement in Anatolia, or even in scrums around Antioch, and as mercenaries later in other Arab armies. The figures are quite versatile, and can even be used in Byzantine armies as Alans, or as adversaries to Byzantine armies.
In light of the atrocities thrust upon the Chaldeans currently, I look forward to playing the Crusaders.
Gangore, I have to agree.
I love SAGA and it has replaced LoTR/Hobbit SBG as my main game (though FoW will join it when I finally get the hang of painting 15 mm); however, playing the ancestors of ISIS (or whatever they are called now) is not high on my list of priorities.
Is the SAGA system just for skirmish, or is it a mass combat system as well?
Skirmish level most games are played with a 6pt Warbands that are around the 50 model mark but can be as few as 25 if you take all hearthguard.
Hmmm… like the bigger games. If this seems like a lead-in to a ‘mass combat’ rules query, guilty as charged. Do you know of any good rules sets for larger Dark Age/Medieval battles?
You could try ‘Hail Caesar’ or ‘Glutter of Ravens’ or ‘Dux Bellorum’. There is also ‘Comitatus’ by Legio Wargames. Not to mention ‘Armati’, ‘Impetus’ (IIRC) and finally Warhammer Ancient Battles. I have only played the last one. I enjoyed it until it was revamped and made overly complicated.
I noticed yesterday that DBA version 3 is nearing completion. It is a ‘massed combat’ system using as many figures as Saga.
Nothing leaps out as a great system for Dark Ages mass battles. There is an unpublished one I’m fond of, but that’s obviously no good to you lol. I’m not a fan of Dux Bellorum. WAB is decent though I prefer War & Conquest to that and Clash of Empires from that family of games. None of them are specifically designed for Dark Ages. Nor are Hail Caesar, DBA or Field of Glory. If you want to play Crusader mass battles then Deus Vult is an obvious one to check out.
You could have a look at these , they have a Crusades supplement

This is a nice little campaign system for the Crusades

GB are saying that they may have it at Claymore this weekend, no official release date as yet but very soon they say
