Contents Of Warhammer 40K Indomitus 9th Edition Launch Box Revealed
June 13, 2020 by brennon
The Warhammer 40,000 preview for this weekend has been showing off the Games Workshop miniatures available within the new Launch Box (Note: Not A Starter Set) for those who want to dive into the Sci-Fi wargaming of the grimdark far future. This box is called Indomintus and is packed with miniatures.

This set has been designed not as a Starter Set (it doesn't come with dice, measuring devices etc) but as a Launch Box to celebrate the release of the new edition sometime in July. The set contains two massive armies of Primaris Space Marines and Necrons and it does also include the new 9th Edition Core Rulebook which we'll look at later.
New Primaris Space Marine Miniatures // Warhammer 40,000
Regardless of all of that; I think that everyone just wants to see the models right? We'll just run through and include the names of them all as there are a lot of miniatures...
Space Marine Primaris Captain
Space Marine Primaris Lieutenant
Space Marine Primaris Chaplain
Space Marine Judicar
Space Marine Bladeguard Ancient
Space Marine Bladeguard Veterans
Space Marine Eradicators
Space Marine Assault Intercessors
Space Marine Outriders
So, that gives you a little bit of an insight into all of the miniatures for the Space Marine side of things, especially when it comes to looking at the way that the Primaris Space Marines are filling the gaps in their armoury. They have started to introduce a lot of elements here which replace the older Space Marines. Whilst they still have a place within the world of Warhammer 40,000, it's hard to not consider just making an entire army of Space Marines in their new armour.
New Necron Miniatures // Warhammer 40,000
As well as the miniatures for the Space Marines, we've also got their enemies. The Necrons are looking perhaps better than the Space Marines by a country mile and I could see a lot of people starting up armies of the newly awoken and those who are tireless in their eradication of the inferior.
Necron Overlord
Necron Royal Warden
Necron Plasmancer
Necron Skorpekh Lord
Necron Plasmacyte
Necron Skorpekh Destroyers
Necron Canoptek Reanimator
Necron Cryptothralls
Necron Warriors
There are some rather fascinating looking miniatures in the collection for the Necrons. I love the new design of them and I like the fact that they have seriously been beefed up. The basic Warriors are looking awesome, especially with their battered and broken look, but I think the new characters and some of the monstrous beasts with their many legs are rather sniffing indeed.
Warhammer 40,000 Core Rules & More
As well as including the new miniatures in this Launch Box you'll also get this full-art version of the Core Rules for Warhammer 40,000.
Warhammer 40,000 Core Book (Indomitus Edition)
I would imagine that this is going to be included as part of Indomitus itself and you'll see a different Core Rules book for you to snap up later on. I am fascinated to see how they break things down to do their specific Starter Set further down the line.
The Edge Of Silence
As well as the main book, you'll also have The Edge Of Silence which "includes all the lore around which the Indomitus box is based. In it, the harrowing nature of the Pariah Nexus is revealed, and the narrative stage is set for what will become a crucial new war zone as the horrifying magnitude of the Necron threat is unveiled." This sounds like a lot of fun to dive into.
Beyond Indomitus // More Warhammer 40,000
But wait, there's more! Games Workshop also revealed four more miniature kits which are going to be following the release of Indomitus.
Space Marine Invader ATV
Space Marine Firestrike Servo-Turret
Necron Lokhust Heavy Destroyers
Necron Canoptek Doomstalker

I may have to pick up that Judicar…
All good until they said it was a limited number of the box set available. Oh GW, why do you always have to pull this stunt :p And no price reveal. Some things change, some things stay the same. Those space marine shields are sweet.
At least they said they’ll make “enough for anyone who wants one”. Time will tell how many that will be of course heh
Yeah, just make sure you want one in the first hour they go on pre-order 🙂
I’m assuming at least $200 CAD, so somewhere around 120 quid would be my guess. Basically, it will be pricey enough that IF you can afford it at the time, you will have an advantage but if you can’t expect to pay extortionate prices on FleaBay…
I expect both armies to be ‘start collecting’ sets eventually (maybe even before Christmas 2020), because that happened before.
The only ‘exclusive’ will be the rulebook without that new 40k logo.
It’s the whole “Sisters of Battle” box set all over again. Yup, it WILL sell out in pre-order AND there’s going to be frustrated customers (yet again). FOMO strikes again, and one of the maddening things is how GW try and spin the “FOMO is a GOOD thing” (see article below) https://www.warhammer-community.com/2020/04/27/garfys-patriarch-and-other-projects/ I do wish that the head bods at GW would stop listening to the marketing dept and just RELEASE minis (with no limited availability, or “only available for a limited time” (see another article below that made my blood boil as it’s actually using the term FOMO to… Read more »
The models are really nice – I particularly like the Marines and think they would look rather good painted up as Dark Angels and the bikes as Ravenwing. Some lovely touches on the paint jobs as well. The Necrons look as if they have been locked away for a few million years. Very tempted to pick it up and have it sit on a shelf for years before I get a chance to paint it.
Whilst being interviewed in the stream, one of the ‘eavy Metal team revealed that they made some combinations of the existing paints that GW will release as new paints.
Another Interviewee said that “The Edge Of Silence” booklet moves the narrative from the last Psychic Awakening book up to the point of where 9th ed starts. Hopefully that info is available elsewhere, perhaps at a later date.
I do wonder if the separate Core Rulebook will be available at the same time as this Launch Box… Was the Sister of Battle Codex available separately when that initial box set was released?
After re-reading both what Ben wrote above and the article on the Warhammer Community site, it looks like the separate Core Rulebook will be released after the Launch Box….
Hmmm.
They all look good. Ive been playing since 3rd ed dropped and i have never once felt the need to field a marine force but these bad boys have changed my mind! 🙂
Why do I hear my wallet screaming in pain? All joking aside, HOLY CRAP do these look great! The Primaris are getting the classic “space knights” look back instead of just being generic space marines (even if they are Ultramarines…)and actually look grimdark again. I’m facing a serious temptation to buy that new captain! And the Necrons…HOO BOY the Necrons! THIS is the update they needed, and these new sculpts and models are beautiful! They really look like monstrous things that have been locked away for thousands of years and are risen to wreak havoc on the living. If the… Read more »
like the quad and the 88,think the box set may be out of my price range
I am supper excited by this, every time a new edition comes out i promise myself that I will actually play more… not really happened as of yet but….. this might be the one! Model wise love the marines, not sure on the open visor on the captain, the shield is growing on me, The ancient I dunno model looks great with the robes, perfect for my Dark Angels, but the banner thing looks too AOS for me.. Judicar looks sexy! and I cannot wait for that ATV! Necrons… yea they look ok, just no interest in another army! Perhaps… Read more »
Love this – never been a fan of spacemarines in general (real heros wear Flak) but they look damn good, and the Necrons are supercool as well. Can’t wait until the pre-order goes up. So happpy!
Looking forward to the new box, more for the necrons than the marines
If it changes anyone’s opinion, all of the launch box models are push-fit – from the Warhammer Community website.
To be fair, that’s been pretty consistent over the last few editions & AOS… so I would have been more surprised if they were NOT push fit. That said, it also means that any of the models that have alternative builds will see another box down the line, right? like the canoptek and maybe even the 3 legged lord will eventually get their own kit with more options? one would imagine anyway. Also probably means the bikers will get their own bike box at some point with weapons you want as well… lol.. oh, GW, you so sly.
not all of them looked like push-fit when they showed the sprues in the stream.
I think the necron infantry were the only ones that looked like regular plastic kits.
However none of them looked complicated to build and you’re going to need plastic glue anyway.
I may get this for Papa’s boys and the necron(net) figures look great as well the extra new models like the tarantula? I love.
the lack of wheels or tracks on the ‘tarantula’ is weird… does any army have a static gun platform that isn’t part of fortifications? or.. I guess.. this could be under fortifications in the army builder… hmm…
probably antigrav like the new tanks.
I get not wanting the space marines to go all ‘rogue trader’ and ‘custodes’ and have grav bikes … but it does seem like a missed opportunity to incorporate more anti-grav tech into the bikes and trikes and quad wheeled vehicles…
looking really good…
but why didn’t they fix the logo?
seriously… like.. is it suppose to be 3D but it just didn’t translate to 2D.. but on all the books and stuff in real life it will look like it’s hovering? I don’t get it.
That said…
Someone please talk me out of buying this. I bought the 8th edition starter + some other stuff and played all of like 4 games of 8th edition… so other than loving the models.. not sure I need any of this =p Lol. GW… you so sly.
lol … I know
I wasn’t expecting to like the necrons, but the moment they called them ‘murder buckets’ I was sold.
The only things I don’t like are the bikes and that new buggy.
There is no way in heck that thing can turn. Even the bikes I have trouble imagining how that front wheel ought to move.
And how many children will I have to sell to buy this “launch” box? The Eradicators scream Salamanders. And the Nec paint job still looks like rust to me.
The distinction between not being a starter box and being for collectors and people already playing worries me price-wise. Taking out the quickstart rules, dice and rulers hopefully doesn’t equate to a more expensive product.
First entry into an edition is historically great value, the GW of today has me second guessing that. Can’t wait to see prices – fingers crossed.
I agree.
It is an odd decision to not have the first product be a starter set in the traditional meaning of the word.
It looks like they’ve got two ‘start collecting’ sets of minis in there (80 Euro each) + rulebook (40 Euro) + statistic summary (?)
In theory that would be 200 Euro … but I kind of doubt that is what they’re going to ask, but the way they’re going out of their way that this is ‘for veterans’ makes me think that it might not be too far off.
Would those forces be good as a starter army? They look close combat oriented, and also probably have lots of special rules.
Really like this box!
I might finally go for Primaris marines (love the Bladeguards) and even keep the Necrons (love everything!).
While I don’t want to appear negatve, I honestly think this is a terrible idea. The models are stunning, as always, I love the background, the lore, the story and everything about the 40k world, but this box is just going to be a overly expensive debt inducing monstrosity for anyone of lesser means. I think GW may be tipping back into the ‘we’re top of the market, we do what we want’ mentality that caused so much contention a few years back. Forge World minis are currently on a par with regular GW for prices right now…
No doubt it’ll cost a small fortune, although it’ll be a good box to split with a mate. Near the end of the stream they did mention that the box will save you a good 50% of getting it all separately.
I’d want to take that turret, and mount it on top of a vehicle…
I’m concerned that the rules will only be in the starter box initially. Forces the hard core gamers that ‘must have the newest rules now’ to buy the box and with it being limited run that could push anyone that wants to start into the hobby out of the picture.
I presume BoW will be putting out a preorder?
I think i’ll wait for the proper Starter Box as this is designed for more hardcore fans.
what would a ‘proper’ starter box need besides a ‘quick start’ booklet and dice ?
A more vanilla space marines and necron force, mix of ranged and close combat troops?
Not 40k player but i do like the look of all these could be used for my Future war–bolt action rules….but well lets see what the prices will be.
Since when did two MASSIVE armies come in at about 21 figures each side? Alas this is why historicals beats sci-fi/fantasy hands down. What with the recent releases from Vitrix and Wargame Atlantic (for ancients) and Perrys for WW2 and Napoleonics, we cam build truly MASSIVE armies of 100s of figure per side for the same price (as all these come in at RRP at under a quid a figure). Sometimes you need to take a step back from the blown up, expertly painted figures and realise what you ARE getting for your money in the box. Go for Clash… Read more »
Depends what you want and what you like. Personally the only reason I am thinking of getting in to 9th Edition is that it can be played as a skirmish game now. If I want 100’s of figures then i’ll play a 15mm game. As for ‘more fun’, well that is subjective.
Depends indeed, but I’d say there’s always more fun to be found in a new game. The issue with “chasing the latest edition” is that you are spending money on a game that plays at least 90% like the last edition. And when your paying GW prices, that’s a lot of money that could be invested in a totally new game with a new era and figures….
The books looks greta but why limited again? And will the release a non limited starter box?
This looks awesome but as an Aussie I’m not looking forward to the price. Pretty sure the SOB box cost the equivalent of £186.
looking forward to this
Necron half is easily more interesting half of new boxed set.
