About the Project

So, I’ve been a huge fan of the Gears of War video game since its inception and have happy chainsawed my way through all the releases. Something about its gritty aesthetic and play style has always appealed to me and I’ve long since felt it would sit well in a tabletop format. Recently it was reworked as an Xcom style turn based strategy game on PC which only strengthened my suspicions. Now, at the beginning off lockdown me and a few mates decided one way to keep ourselves entertained was to fire up a weekly Gears Horde session which along with the PC version rekindled my love of the franchise. Now I was vaguely aware that there was a board game knocking about but had never really looked at it. So after a little research, A. I discovered it was out of print, B. It wasnt particularly easy to get hold of and C. It was expensive at £100 + for a decent copy. Not really being able to justify the cost I had a look at my collection of games and realised that it was time for a clear out and made a deal with myself that if I could cover the cost then I would pick a copy up. Thankfully eBay turned up trumps and I soon cleared out a bunch of stuff I no longer needed and after about two weeks I got a notification that a copy had been listed. After a small bit of haggling I secured a near mint copy for £110. Next up I needed to find out if it was any good but due to lockdown I had no ready opponents to play. Thankfully upon reading the rules it works perfectly well as a solo game so I set up and gave it a go and it’s played very well. It’s kind of a light versions of Reichbusters but crucially it felt like Gears. So deciding I was going to keep it I decided it needed painting as the models, although one piece pvc jobbies are really good, especially the Locust. So join me as I finally get to paint the guys of Delta One! if it works on the PC. Also I really want to paint up Delta One!

Next up it’s the daddy, Marcus! Apologies I may have missed a few shots due to drunkenness! Next up it’s the daddy, Marcus! Apologies I may have missed a few shots due to drunkenness!

Apologies, missed the brainmatter biege drybrush, flesh tone wash and a 2.1 dark tone and wash medium. Also missed the blue effect but worry not, Baird and Dom will have full details!

It’s only right I start with the members of Delta one but I soon realised that it’s tough to see the colour palettes in game so off to the Internet for some colour schemes where I soon found that the high end toys were really good reference points

“It’s the Cole train baby, WOO!”“It’s the Cole train baby, WOO!”

First thing to note, the models are BALLS! To caveat, they are very nice but I get the distinct feeling that they weren’t sculpted but just transferred direct from the 3D models the use for the game. Now, I’m no expert and could be talking complete shite but I believe if they were traditionally sculpted they would have been much more suitable for painting as at the size they are the detail is almost impossible to pick out. That and for some reason, even after priming paints don’t seem to adhere very well, even after a wash in soapy water. I’m assuming it’s something to do with the pvc they are made from. Anyway, I still want a painted Delta squad so onwards!

Just realised I need a really dark metal  for the boots so I just painted black and drybrushed silver

Apologies once again Cole was finished late on a Friday night and in a boozey haze I forgot to take a few shots namely a brain matter Beige drybrush and a 2.1 mix of dark tone and wash medium.
