3 Colours Up: Drowned Earth – Yuttaraptor | Miniature Painting
May 26, 2020 by johnlyons
John is painting up the fantastic Yuttaraptor miniature from Drowned Earth. We love any excuse to play around with dinosaurs on the tabletop and here John uses lots of techniques from Airbrushing through to Washes, Contrast Paints and Drybrushing in this tutorial.

If you have ever been interested in creating a miniature diorama of the kitchen scene from Jurassic Park then this little raptor would look great attacking a fridge! John starts with a couple of airbrushing passes then moves on to masking off a pattern which is beautifully layered.
What colours would you use for the Yuttaraptor?

the dino looks great john.
the bluetack is a great trick to remember.
great video John 🙂 ty a lot! what I appreciated in a special way was your “honesty” in saying maybe that drybrush was not the best idea… I am an average painter, so I hit my head against the wall so often because of my mistakes that the wall is trying to learn to dodge me, and knowing even a Master Painter can sometimes pick the “wrong” is encouraging!
btw, do you have some suggestion on varnish? like how much to thin it, which one to use… this kind of stuff 🙂
Hey buddy. I typically don’t thin varnish at all when I put it through an airbrush. Adding thinner in my experience kills the matt finish for me. I use two varnishes. Army Painter Anti-shine and Citadel Stormshield. Both go through an airbrush fine without thinning. Anti-shine gives a slightly better finish but theres very little between them.
If we’re talking spray can varnishes. Humbrol and Tamiya matt coats are great. Unless your lucky enough to get some Testors varnish.
Hope this helps! 😀
Really enjoyed this and was just what I needed for a upcoming mini big thanks ?
