GW Drop An Old World Update Packed With Bear Cavalry
May 12, 2020 by brennon
Games Workshop has dropped another Old World update this week. The focus was still on the men and women of Kislev this time around as they started to show off the first steps towards bringing Bear Cavalry back to the tabletop.
Bears have always had an important role within Kislevite society and they are looked on with some reverence. Indeed, the link between a rider and his bear is particularly strong indeed. When Tsar Boris died it was said that his bear watched over his body for a day and a night before it vanished into the snow.
For that reason, the team who are designing these new miniatures look to be putting a lot of effort into making these bears look like walking talismans, totemic tokens as much as beasts of war (hah).
We can see a few different variants of the Bear Cavalry as part of the preview. Some of them are less armoured than others which denotes the status and veteran-level of the various riders. Whilst it would be great to see these in 28mm at the head of a mighty new army, I have to say that I am still very much hoping they go small for The Old World.
I think that it would be brilliant to see the splendour and pageantry of the Warhammer Fantasy world done on a smaller scale akin to Warmaster. It would make the game distinct and different from Warhammer: Age Of Sigmar and allow them to play around with the idea of epic battles in a different way.
Considering how far Games Workshop have come in terms of their miniature design, think about what they could do with 12mm or 15mm troops, character and monster!
It seems like the return to The Old World is still a fair way off and it will most likely be in 28mm but I hold out hope!
Are you going to be keeping an eye on this release?

Reminds me of the Bjorn from that Magic Compass book….
Is that the story they used for the golden compass film?
Yes. Though the movie is only the first book. And the books are more in-depth and a lot better 😉
Nice would be great as a commanders transport stead.
It’s a change from the Kislev Winged Lancers, which I hope will also make a reappearance.
Yeah that would be awesome.
I prefered a lot of the older fantasy mini’s to GW’s pushed-to-extremes current age of Sigmar stuff, so fingers crossed they use that “classic” style with archetypal fantasy races when they bring back the old world, instead of trying to give a new twist to everything. I want my dwarves to be dwarfs, not steampunks hanging off floating balls.
I like the first two a lot, the last one I like less but its still good. Part of me likes the idea of smaller scales for larger battles, but that has its drawbacks as well. The farther you pull back, the less characters seem to “matter”, you lose “focus” on the smaller details of army building to concentrate on the bigger scope of things. Old Warhammer was very much about the elite units and the characters, so it would be a big change for most. Also, there is just less hobby at smaller scales. Less kitbashing. Atleast in my… Read more »
Kislevites were always my favourite faction and I have a huge Warmaster army already so if they did bring the Old World back in that scale I’ll be very happy. The detail of these concepts is suggesting something bigger in scale though. I’m interested to see what they come up with for their return to the Old World but don’t expect anything in the next couple of years sadly.
Personally I hope they do Kislev in 28mm, it would give the 28mm fantasy market a much needed kick in the pants to go beyond Western European themes for plastic. As it stands we are starting to have different manufactures making competing men at arms sets were the base bodies almost look the same (I am pretty sure one could paint up Oathmark’s Humans and Fireforge’s Northmen with the same colors and most casual observers would assume they came from the same box). If we are lucky maybe they will do some other off the map armies like Cathy or… Read more »
I would love to see this game made in 6mm – 10mm. 15mm would be alright too I guess, something small and EPIC though!
I just dont understood the appeal of infantry level games at 6mm. 10mm is horribly small to begin with, but 6mm is just dumb to me. Once you get that small, you mine as just use printed cardboard chits in my opinion. The models have nearly zero detail, and are very hard to tell apart.
But then again I am getting a lot older. LoL
I just find that the smaller scales can give you a much more grand battle scene, a grand sweeping vista of massive armies arrayed for battle.
Saying that, I completely understand the lack of individual detail putting some off but at the massed battle level do individual troops really stand out? In the grand massed battles do any individuals stand out enough to have character level details?
I myself am getting on in years and find that I am enjoying the smaller scale massed battles more to my liking.
Noooo, no messing with scales please. I’m really looking forward to the return of the Old World and I don’t want it messed up with some silly decision like that. If it were not in the standard Warhammer scale, I’d avoid it like the plague.
With this amount of detail in the concept art, I’d lean strongly towards them sticking towards the old 28mm scale. The project is being directed (mostly) towards classic WHFB fans who came into the series with the same 28mm scale, so I’d imagine they’d stick with it in order to not alienate their audience. (And the first person who talks about “AoS alienating their audience already” is going to get it.) Another thing I’ve been thinking about is how GW has been pushing a lot of cross-compatibility with their various lines, i.e. bits from fantasy are at the same scale… Read more »
I am very much looking forward to the Old World’s return (whenever that will be). Kislev has never been of interest for me but seeing these gives me high hopes for all the factions in the game
