Mythic Games Talk The Basics Of Hel: The Last Saga
May 1, 2020 by brennon
This week Mythic Games started to reveal more details on HEL: The Last Saga. Whilst we've been seeing a lot of artwork and such, a big article over on their website HERE started to go into more details as to what you can expect from the game.
The game is going to be coming to Kickstarter May 12th and will feature a two-to-four (although solo is also an option) board game adventure which will see them mixing together dungeon crawling mechanics and resource management as you try and survive on your ill-fated quest.
The main game of HEL: The Last Saga will take place across thirteen "Songs" which are broken down into three or four scenarios each. In total, they reckon that this game will take around eighty hours for you to complete.
Failure and success are integral to the campaign you'll play. If you fail then the game will remember that and change future sessions to reflect what has happened in the story. This means there are legacy elements to the game but you DO NOT destroy any of the in-game material. So, once you're done with your adventure you can go back and try again or perhaps see how others fare as they head off on their Last Saga.
As well as featuring the dungeon crawling elements, the game also features exploration, adventure, resource gathering and more. The scenarios will all feel very different reportedly meaning that you'll not find yourself doing the same thing over and over again. You'll face terrible foes like The Treetop Ones and much more in the darkness.
As well as having to deal with external threats, the game will also feature elements of survival as you try and stay alive in this terrible land. You'll be able to draw on faith in order to try and survive but also being practical and finding supplies does a lot to keep up morale.
Horror is another element of the game that I am very much looking forward to exploring. It will be interesting to see how they are able to convey this using the game rules and what stories they find themselves able to tell through the 900 paragraphs of dialogue they have already planned for the game.
With a selection of very colourful characters that you'll get to play as in turn throughout your adventure, this seems like a really fascinating game. I am going to reserve judgement until I see the game in play, but because of the Viking slant to the game and this focus on storytelling, I could see myself getting involved on this one.
Make sure to read their full run-down on the basics of the game HERE.
Are you tempted by HEL: The Last Saga?

I’m really tempted by the background, description of the style of game – (dungeon crawlers are nice), and the models. If I had a clue who I might ever play the game with my resolution to swear off Kickstarter would be under strain!
I was on the fence about this one. I was really looking forward to the Viking theme, and the miniatures where really pulling me in hard. However, gameplay wasn’t disclosed yet and that was one thing holding me back. I don’t mind buying a big game just for miniatures, as long as the “game” behind it is at least “okay”. Failing that, then there has to be a lot of miniatures for a very very good price. This game looks to have exceptional gameplay though, with great miniatures. So now its going to be nearly impossible to not back this.… Read more »
More fabulous looking figures to choose from.
The minis are wonderful but the horror is even better, looking forward to hearing more about this one ?
I wasn’t much of a fan of the motif given The 13th Warrior and Beowulf but since watching The Ritual, Thale and Midsommar Scandinavian horror is on my radar. I will keep following this.
This is kickstarter being used as a pre-order system, but one without any protection for the buyer.
And your point?
Wasn’t ‘without any protection for the buyer’ obvious enough?
Very obvious, literally the entire obvious conclusion anyone would draw kickstarter…. hardly worth calling a point.
