Vampire Diorama
What's this all about then?
I’ve started building dioramas. It’s something I’ve never really cared for, but in recent months have had a good laugh putting a couple together for the Titan Forge monthly competitions (I’m less inclined to bother with their competitions since their choice of winners – particularly when judged against their own criteria for entrants – has been… bizarre, to say the least!)
Anyway, I was looking forward to May’s vampire release as I had a couple of ideas for a diorama for the upcoming competition.
The most obvious and immediate idea was to make this character actually fly!
Using a tiny stepper motor and a threaded rod concealed somewhere in the diorama I figured same kind of mechanism that makes the print bed of a resin printer rise and fall could be employed to make this vampire character appear to levitate off the ground.
But I was naffed off about the stupid competition, so thought I wouldn’t bother. Until I saw this Youtube video….
…. and thought “bugger the competition, I’ve got an awesome idea for a gothic/vampire diorama, and I’m going to sodding well make it anyway!”
So that’s what I’m doing.
This project is probably going to be a bit of a slow burner; there are plenty of gothic/vampire figures from other Patreon creators (Vae Victis has just released some nice vampires that would go well in this scene) but I’ll probably wait ’til May for the Titan Forge ones anyway.
I love the way Lyla Mev has used a multitude of skills in one tiny display piece: her crafting of chandeliers from ear-ring hooks is inspired, the use of a the blue/purple colour scheme across everything to make it really feel like a night-time scene is just perfect. The stencilling to create a moonlit window effect on the floor and walls is beautiful.
So I’ll be stealing all her ideas leaning heavily on her influence to create a similar diorama. But – of course – stuffed full of unnecessary tech. And who knows…. maybe a little bit of magic…?
I also think that the floating vampire is the best model of that months releases! Can’t wait to print off my own for painting too!
I’ve got to be honest, I was totally sold on vampires after seeing that one model, but have been a little underwhelmed by the rest of this month’s release. I got some really nice gothic stuff from Vae Victis in April, so I think I’ll just abandon the whole Titan Forge competition idea and just make a nice diorama with the best mix of models I’ve got.
