New Space Wolves Coming For Warhammer 40,000! [Update!]
July 7, 2014 by brennon
I would have preferred to see some Bretonnians coming out of Games Workshop at this point but it looks like Games Workshop are going to keep their eye on Warhammer 40,000 for the moment. It appears as if Space Wolves and Orks will be the focus of July with a new 'Boxed Set'...
The actual character miniature here, Dragongaze, is very awesome looking and I think that's probably one of the coolest plastic kits we've seen in a while. Whether this actually takes the place of Dark Vengeance I don't really know yet. It could well just be a different set that sits alongside it and follows the campaign of Sanctus Reach.
Needless to say it's quite cool to see some new Space Wolves and this probably means they're going to be the next codex. You won't have to wait too long to find out exactly what's inside (the leaks will probably come out before the White Dwarf again!).
Update: And now we have the contents of said box for both sides!

What do you think of the news?

Interesting. I do also wonder what form that whole Space Wolves vs Orks box is going to take as it might not be starter box at all. Maybe it’s Strike Force box like thing but we will see.
hears to getting our space wolves powers back and not the generic ones. I want my Jaws back damn-it!
Dubious. If this is another idiotic Collection with no savings then wtf man. If there are savings with this kit (recent savings in boxed sets have been minimal, pathetic even) then, well, that’s fair enough.
But this is not the “Starter Kit” people imagined, i.e 100% new plastic models, designed to get people into the game. These are mostly all old models.
I’m still hoping for a new Blood Angels vs Orks boxed set (maybe we will get a surprise eh?)
well I guess this is the final proof that they brought the new edition
out 2 years ahead of schedule : /
… no new starter set, just repackaged army deal with existing sprues : /
… disappointing, but understandable,
they obviously needed the cash injection after their stock price halved 🙁
Grukk Face Rippa looks amazing, but I don’t think I can afford to shell out £70
just for 1 new mini, even if it is that good : /
Wasn’t half, back in the beginning of the year it decreased by 27% or so
oh right 😛 ha ha
…. couldn’t remember the exact number 😛
I just knew it was pretty bad 😛
I actually heard the reasoning for this but alas my memory is crap – it might have been along the lines “GW assumed the Wood Elves release would fail, so they had 40K 7th as a back up plan … but then Wood Elves sold pretty damn well, so they ended up having to release their back up plan because .. well they might as well, and nobody thought the Wood Elves would sell” GW are well aware I would assume that Starter Sets full of NEW plastic models are big sellers. I can’t imagine them never releasing a 7th… Read more »
yeah, I’m guessing they’d just started sculpting the 7th ed starter minis when they got the end of year financials in 😛 ha ha because they normally start making things a couple of years in advance ( I’ve had some dealings with them, so I know a tiny bit about their process 😛 ha ha ) … so your right, maybe we’ll see something more next year 🙂 but I would guess maybe they’ll go back to normal releases schedule in 2 years, and just release them in the 8th edition starter 😛 ha ha … although this could of… Read more »
Looks to me like they’re doing away with the old starter sets and replacing them with these campaign sets(makes sense, only 2 new models = less production costs). Quick add up of what’s on offer and you have £104.50 of old models, plus two new(worth £18 each?), a campaign book(let) and a mini rule book. Here’s hoping it sells for about the same as the old DV set…
100 Euro apparently, so a reasonable saving overall.
Doesn’t matter how cheap or even how good it is. Someone will bitch and moan.
Sadly I have to agree with that. Even when GW have stuff right they cop it from somewhere. At the end of the day just back your own instincts and if you think it’s cool then that’s enough.
No im sure no one would bitch and moan if the stuff was priced reasonably for what you get .. Gotta love how if GW threads dont have enough negative criticism in them, fans of said company say things that has a high chance of provoking negative comments instead. Quite an interesting mindset if you ask me.
It’s a funny situation alright. There’s not much in between when it comes to opinions and GW
I do like this set much more than dark vengeance… The Space marine vs. Ork fight appeals to me much more than human vs. corrupt human. Although I really like the design choices behind the space wolves, I don’t like how its almost a necessity for the troops mouths to be open in almost all variety. I mean, I know they want to show off the fangs, but they just give off this odd “love doll” army feel and it kinda puts me off. Maybe its just me. That and they look a bit 80’s.
This is an awesome combo box of minis! I love Space Wolves, I love Orks, and I’ve wanted to get some orks for a while now, so this set is perfect for me. 🙂
If they do other sets like this with the other races, it will be great for newcomers to try out a small force before going headlong into collecting a whole army, especially if you can split the two forces with a friend, and possibly the cost too.
Wouldn’t have thought purple was your colour @brennon but you rock those nails 😉
you made my day mate!
Does anybody know if the box set will include a small rulebook!?
Yes it includes 2 books, one small rulebook and a campaign supplement.
Nice! So the supplement is also in there! Can’t wait to see if it countains the rules for planetstrike, too.
The bit that is stumping me is that it doesn’t look snap fit or like the usual kind of amount of a starter set. An odd way to go. Maybe it’s just me wait to see more I guess.
@number32: They may be “old” kits but the Nobz one is pretty neat! And the killa kans kit is full of stuff for conversions. Agreat kit of which I already have two (and planning on acquiring two more to get full two squadrons). Space Wolves also didn’t had new models for a while… Can’t speak as i don’t know much about them. Having the small rulebook is a sure buy, all by itself and I learned that the campaign supplement is also in there… Worth the price, I say. Now, I need to find someone who will want to trade… Read more »
Oh I didn’t for a moment suggest that the ‘old’ kits were poor. Just that it was a different direction compared to the usual snap together type kits that they generate. Plenty of bits is great for the seasoned collector but can be a little overwhelming for new players however as suggested this set looks to be something in between. Just in comparison the CSM in DV all new models at the time and 28 models, the Dark Angels were 20 models in the standard edition. In this new one it appears to be 16 models for the space wolves… Read more »
Hope you will! I know it’s a sure buy for me. 😉
Maybe I’m old school but I prefer my kits, kitbash-friendly! 😉
But you’re right… The Dark Vengeance kit was awesome. The Dark Angel psyker (sorry, can’t remember his name) and the chaos lord were two great miniatures. I don’t think that new space wolf character is up to the standard but it looks like the ork warboss is!
Yeah I am the same, I prefer a bit of scope and have only ever attempted slight moderations on the DV stuff. This should be a nice little set and offers ‘bound’ armies out of the box.
Lazy, apparently existing sprues bar the commanders, also not legal armies or balanced (Not that that matters if the campaign uses missions to create great games). Used to buy the starter boxes if I owned one of the armies or more for cool model – GW really don’t want my cash
@happyhowler – not sure but apparently it will with campaign book accordingly to rumours on an unreliable site.
@happy howler second pic confirms it does contain mini rule book
Yup! Both books are in there apparently. 😉
Always glad to see some new Wolves coming out!
Nice nail polish too…a little Slaanesh purple for the boys 😉
… well if it’s Slaanesh, you can never quite tell what it is 😛 ha ha
everyone’s a deviant 😉
Nice looking foward to the new dex as well !
