About the Project
Hobby Challenge 2020, looking through my many (many ?) options for the spring clean and landed on the latest iteration of my original army Chaos Dwarfs! Everyone has that army that is theirs, whether it was the first or the favourite no other army comes quite so close, for the record Chaos Dwarfs are both my first and favourite army ??

Hey folks...it's been a while
Hey y’all, hope everyone is keeping well, it’s been a while.
Thoughtis share some updates and check in on the old OTT community
A few updates to come on this army….
Wanted to play some OnePageRules with these guys with the list above so started with the Flame Spirits
Adding some Bull Centaurs too
How to paint Grim Dark White Armour
The idea behind this is to be quick and easy so there some steps you could add if you were painting a character or alternative methods to get the same effect but I’ve gone for the easiest and quickest way here
1.
Over primer I’ve airbrushed Zandri Dust, this will be the base colour so I’m mainly making sure to hit from below and get the underneath with this, you can also use this through a spray can if you’d like to avoid the airbrush
2.
I’ve then used Pallid Wytch Flesh, this is concentrated from above to leave some of the previous Zandri Dust underneath. Again you could use an alternate white through a spray can for the same effect
3.
Using a sponge I add Rhinox Hide, keeping mainly to the edges and areas that would get hit the most, it’s before this you could also add some decals or finer details so they too would get chipped by the sponge effect here
4.
I’ve used an Armour wash (a mix of about 50% Agrax Earthshade, 30% Nuln Oil 10% Leviathan Purple and 10% Coelia Greenshade) in all the details of the armour like rivets and joints, not being too neat as this will help dull down the brightness of the white base
5.
Mournfang Brown is then watered down heavily and washed/stippled over the areas that have been chipped and also some other random areas to again bring down the brightness of the initial white (I added further details where water may gather and run down after I took the picture at the top of the screen)
More Great Taurus
Went back to the big guy yesterday to redo the wings (second attempt at these, wasn’t happy with the first) and look to do a bit of work on his skin too, again looking to keep it relatively simple to help with finishing this stuff ?
Just like the horns on the earlier Castellan I like the raw look of the wings and the fact that they look it’s painful just to spread those them out all adding the bitterness of their demeanor.
Thinking again about some kind of narrative behind this army ala @HashutsBlessing ‘s good advice I think the pain they are constantly living with is the driving force behind a lot of their actions. Much like the Emperor designed Darth Vader suit to ensure he is in a constant state of discomfort and pain. The pain these guys are suffer is also the result of being manipulated by the one that rules over them…the one and only Astrogoth will eventually head up this army with a conversion I’ve wanted to do for a long long time.
But lots of work to do before that one
With or Without the glow?
I’m not sure if this detracts from the scheme or enhances it ?
Basic update
Finally got around to basing what I’ve painted so far, these are the Age of Sigmar bases but I’m keeping them not glued in so that I can do some scenic Kings of War bases too ??
WIP on Castellan Chaos Dwarf Lord
As with most of my minis I always want to make them a little different (if not very different) than the ‘box art’ so I’ve added some subtle and not subtle changes to this Chaos Dwarf Lord in foot
Once I was happy with that it was onto the painting which I am currently about half way through.
I’d previously used decals for the shield designs and other runes but the spaces here were too small so I had to freehand these ones ?
The addition of red to the armour denotes rank so as far as infantry goes this is the top guy, although clearly touched by chaos I did still want them to show some form of dwarven conformity so I like the idea that these markings still mean something to these guys and they still honour the Dwarf in them as much as the Chaos in them
Still a lot to do, some additional details to the face and then the metallics so any ideas are more than welcome
Many thanks
Minor updates for now...
Work has taken me away from this but I should be getting back to some tonight, meanwhile I’ve been playing about with some pics and finished a bit more of the Great Taurus wing
????
Another Infantry update
Thank you for all the support so far guys, I managed to complete the next 5 too
As those that have known me a while will attest to I don’t think I’ve ever painted so much so quickly, I know 10 in 2 weeks may not seem like much but it is a lot for me ? hopefully it’s a good sign, certainly a sign of how much I’m enjoying this scheme on these minis ??
Added some additional red to highlight the champion of the unit and some more variation
Starting the Display Board
The next part of the project kind of took me by surprise, I was setting up the trampoline for the boys outside when I thought I’d make the most of a sunny day and look to make a start on the display board as it needed a bit of tlc to bring the details back.
Now that I have those details back I can start to paint the board.
Given its Chaos Dwarfs it will of course represent the Dark Lands. Mainly black I want to try and highlight all those skulls like red/orange glowing lava rising up from underground
That’s the plan right now, let’s see what that evolves into
Reinforcements have arrived!
After the test mini was done I wanted to push on asap and complete some more in the same scheme to make sure it repeats and I’m quite happy with how these have turned out.
I think I could have my time a bit more but again all the rushed parts that I’m used to correcting just tend to add the effect ????
Next up either a Magma Cannon or Bull Centaur
?
The test mini
So these have been in the back of mind for quite a while now so I already had a scheme in mind I’ve been wanting to try out.
With a fair bit to paint I wanted to get a scheme that is as quick and easy as I could, I’ve also been wanting to try out the grim dark/blanchistsu/AoS28 aesthetic so thought this was the chance
All in all I really enjoyed painting this guy, managed to get through it pretty quick and turned out how I expected which is a rare thing indeed ?
Starting point
What better place to start than… the… start… Ok so this is the current state of the project
I managed to snag myself a second hand set of battleboards which I wanted to use as a display board for this army, they clean up pretty nice with a bit of work so I’m looking forward to cleaning that flock off and getting those skulls showing and adding glow effect. Thought I’d add a picture of the other board I cleaned up, for a graveyard/Nighthaunt board
Onwards and upwards
