Darrell gets the Thunderfire Cannon for the Space Marines and has a chat about what its good for and how hard it is to build.

Darrell…bad boy, that third part you dragged out with the outer casing was the tecchmarine’s backpack hehe
thats what i was thinking
Don’t get me wrong though Darrell, I’m loving your vids, especially the quantity and that you dig into some of the tactics of the models as well 🙂
Nasty flash and mould lines, bad packaging resulting in bent parts, difficult to build as a result of the design…
Yep sounds like a GW metal model.
No wonder GW didn’t need to try hard to make people think metal models are bad, the ones they produce usually are.
If you had 2 of these units and a servitor dies in one of them and a thunderfire died in the other, could the servitor from the first walk over and use the other thunderfire?
I have 2 of these and have built and painted 1, my recommendation is buy greenstuff and files and be prepared to physically make the parts to fit, the biggest disadvantage is that it is not a barrage weapon so you will need line of sight, but the good thing is this is a weapon that only costs 25 points, the Techmarine with his servo harness comes as standard at 75 points so not so bad, but you need to mount it high to give it any real advantage and use the bolster defences on a building it is in… Read more »
@redshane: the Servitors are attached to the Techmarine as part of his unit so if the Techmarine goes to join the other crew then they will follow but you cant send them to the other Techmarine and leave their Techmarine on his own as you will also run the curse of testing for Mindlock on the Servitors at the start of the turn.
Best you use the Servitors for, and forgive the pun, Cannon Fodder as part of the unit.
I have only build one of these, but it was a mess, with me considering to throw it out the window several times.
but it is really worth the points, and if you come up against some foot slugging orks, it’s going to get real ugly.
I utterly hated building this thing, it drove me to pinning big metal models with nails, which has served me well ever since.
Love the model once its done though, great for siege games
Yes. yes. yes thunderfire cannon. yes yes, All i’m interested in are the Awesome black bases they come with! Thank god Darrel shows us these magnificent works of art!
I got one of these when they first came out… and yeah same problems… the mold must have been off or something, Otherwise very useful unit for a defensive/footslogger SM army. Wish they came in batteries though. Don’t forget the tremor shells also cause dangerous terrain tests on vehicles.. including skimmers.
Oh and the other language at the bottom of the build instructions was Japanese. 🙂
The harness is rather a pain to glue together, with all those tiny ass pieces. The cannon itself isn’t that much more difficult either.
For the calms you’ll shell out for the model, plus the HS slot it takes up, I’d go with a plastic tank every time.
I can’t remember having a major problem with it? With metal kits there’s always going to be a level of prep that will annoy some people. Yes there’s a lot of flash, trimming and filing but I expect that from any metal kit so that’s simply not an issue for me personally. If you do spend the time getting the preparation 100% then it’ll go together quickly. I never had to green stuff mine, yet again I don’t remember it being too badly out of shape. I guess I got lucky. Peopel forget but remember to always scrub your kits… Read more »
what?! o.O how do you get those metal models THAT clean?! O.O
To be honest I have always been put off of this model due to the fact that it is entirely made of metal. However the rules for this have their attractions as well. Might think about shelling out for this in the future. Thanks Darrell once again, loving the vids and I always watch them (especially the 40k ones).
Why do all the videos load so slowly? Does youtube hate BOW?
BoW posts their videos in 720p HD which is an overkill for normal watching.
Fortunately you can always switch the resolution to 480p or even 360p if you can stand the round slottabases becoming a bit soft on the edges 😉
I’ve been wanting to add a Thunderfire Cannon to my army but im a little nervouse about the build. Every source has declared the build to be rather nightmarish so I both want one and dont want one at the same time.
I advanced ordered the Thunderfire Cannon. When I received it there was barely any flashing or mold lines and the assemby went quick and easy. Maybe the Mold is getting worse.
I think ruleswise your servitors taken with the cannon have to test for mindlock until the cannon is destroyed and the techmarine joins their unit:
1. You can take a unit of servitors per each techmarine/master of the forge
2. They are a unit
3. Techmarine purchased with the cannon is in a unit with the cannon until it is destroyed. He then becomes and Independent Character (C:SM p. 73, under Techmarine statline)
4. Two units cannot be combined
5. Servitors test for mindlock unless they start their turn with a Techmarine being part of their unit
if you fire the subterranean blast i asume it still affects tanks even if it cant penetrate their armour because it uses a blast marker and everything under the marker is “hit” meaning it can be useful against mechanised armies that move their tanks in a formation, the only thing stopping me from getting one is the price really
i made my own thunderfire cannon from eldar bits and landraider bits. i like it it fits my army even if i do get a bit of a slaggin for it, but it has killed its fair share of darrells puppys i mean space wolves. i love how they play because no one see’s them as to big a target so dont bother with it then it slows units and kills small tanks and such.
It is unfortunate the lack of quality casting and quality control of GW has given such a bad name in the metal miniatures, other companies have much higher standard and their metal miniatures go easy and carefree. As I have build one of these and it was from the first models produced, the bending barrel, non-alignment of parts excessive flash and mould lines are not from mould degradation, meaning GW should have replaced the mould a long time ago, but form the mould itself, meaning the mould was badly made in the first place and regardless of the bad quality… Read more »
I use the old Thudd Gun model for my Thunderfire. Until this Space marine Codex it has not been used for some years as it went out of the previous codex. My usual opponents have learnt to fear the Thunderfire judging by their groans when they him deployed. I have a lot success with it against Toughness 3 and / or horder opponents. As I understand it the crew for the Thundefire is a Techmarine Gunner and not a Techmarine unless the Thunderfire is destroyed. Therefore he does not gain The Blessing of the Omnissiah and The Independent Character rules… Read more »
This thing is hard to build.
I’m not sure why you guys re-posted this because a) The TFC is now a Finecast model, way better than the metal model was, and b) The new artillery rules in 6th edition make the TFC an even better (i.e. more survivable) unit to play than before. Just be sure to put it in a bolstered ruin or behind a Aegis DL.
