Secret Weapon Take To Kickstarter With Their New HD Bases
March 10, 2020 by brennon
Secret Weapon are on Kickstarter right now looking to fund their project to bring you sets of HD Bases which come pre-coloured and ready-to-use right out of the packet. There are quite a few designs and they might be good for those looking to make some stylish armies!
The premise of the new HD Bases is that the designs have been pre-printed directly onto the plastic which allows them to show off incredible full-colour and textured bases which you simply glue your models onto. The team us a UV printing process which uses standard black bases to begin with but then applies the beautiful finished project over the top.
As you can hopefully see in the image above, there is a little bit of height and relief to the bases meaning that they don't appear as stickers but instead fully painted bases which frame the model beautifully. The collection currently introduces a range of base styles which would be a good fit for both Sci-Fi and Fantasy gaming.
I think this is a really neat idea and certainly proves how far 3D printing has come on in recent years. I really would like to get a few of these in my hands to see how they look and feel in reality but you can't deny how cool they look at the very least! Here are a few more of their designs, looking at the wider range of bases sizes available.
I think these would be absolutely perfect for people trying to make really interesting looking skirmish warbands and gangs. I could see these rocking for the likes of Infinity, really helping to add to those cinematic miniatures that Corvus Belli produce.
More designs are on the way and you can check out the Kickstarter in more detail for a range of bases options and what's coming next.
What do you think of their idea?

Was just thinking how better it would have been if Warlord had partnered up with Secret Weapon to produce low profile textured sea bases for their upcoming Victory at Sea game (rather than the “blob” basing they seemed to go with). Doing sea bases for ANY Naval game has always been a pain in the neck, and this technology could be the best solution 🙂
In theory the idea is sound. But as always the actual product has do be as good as the renders. And with almost everything mass produced and printed there are going to be troubles… And I think if they don’t deliver 100% all of the time there will be bad press. Because if it’s not perfect there is no point in using it when you have to repaint it or wait for a new batch.
I’m sceptical.
They do have actual pictures : https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/secretweapon/hd-bases-by-secret-weapon-miniatures/posts/2781524
SWM has retail presence and has run multiple KS, so I expect full delivery. Alternately, just wait for retail.
Nice.
With all the hard work Mr Justin does over at SWM these bases are going to be a game changer.
Mosaic…hurts my eyes. I’m blind, blind! All kidding aside, I’d sure hate to get a little heavy-handed with the glue attaching the figures to any of those. Oops, the KS video shows how a large blob of super glue is hardly visible. Now if I could only paint equal to to how the bases look.
KS has been cancelled and will be restarted. Next KS will have pledge levels, including SWM freebies at $100 and higher levels. All patterns will be available. Enjoy!
