GF9 Travel With The Doctor In New Core Game + Loads Of Expansions!
March 9, 2020 by brennon
Gale Force Nine also announced this week that they are going to be coming back to their Doctor Who: Time Of The Daleks board game with a revamped version which features Jodie Whittaker's 13th Doctor!
This new set will give you all of the content from the original game with a little bit of a tweak here and there. Plus of course, it also brings Jodie's 13th Doctor into the mix so you can go on some new adventures. I have really been enjoying the latest couple of series of the show (give or take one or two episodes) so it's nice to see the 13th Doctor getting a showing in board game form.
The game is a lot of fun and sees you playing as not just one Doctor but a selection of them from throughout space and time. You have to try and stop the Daleks from being able to enact their plans by working together although there might be a few twists here and there which throw a spanner in the works.
As you can see, the new core game features a massive leap through time with the 1st, 4th, 11th and 13th Doctors in the works. All of the models are looking pretty good too!
If you're someone who already has the original Core Game though then you might want to expand things and include the 13th Doctor through the aid of a new expansion pack which is also coming out soon. This one gives you access to the 3rd and 13th Doctor plus the 8th Doctor which is a nice little add-on as you head to five and six players at the table rather than just four.
Honestly, if you're a Doctor Who fan then this seems like the core game to go and pick up. It's got neat gameplay mechanics, fun miniatures and plenty of additional content coming to support it in the future. Whovians are going to be very happy indeed.
Companion Expansions
If you're looking to represent some of the additional characters that help the Doctor on their journey then you'll be pleased to see some new options in the form of their Friends Expansions. Here we have River, Amy, Clara & Rory who each have their own neat miniatures, cards and more.
Then, if you're looking to go that extra step and pick up even more Friends/Companions then you also have some classic (nowadays anyway) allies in the form of Mickey, Rose, Martha & Donna.
This was the era of Doctor Who which really got me back into the show and I've been watching ever since the days of David Tennant. I think these could be a lot of fun and help add more awesomeness to your experiences at the tabletop as you're trying to stop the Daleks!
What do you make of this news from Gale Force Nine?

Am I a bad person for just wanting the Companions expansions? I tried the game before and, while it wasn’t my cup of tea, I love the look of the companions’ models.
Heck no! (: I’m getting the game primarily for the miniatures. I’m sure you can kit-bash the dice for the Dr. Who RPG or make your own from them. While Hasslefree (?) has the miniatures in metal, I think the plastic ones are fine and less expensive once you factor in shipping (free at the OLGS when you hit the free shipping threshold).
Literally EVERY board game I have purchased has been for the models, and a desire to use them elsewhere. SOMETIMES, I’ll even use the bonus game they come with! 😛
All the figures from this line are great in my opinion.
As I already have the Core box I think I’ll just keep collecting the pieces that I’ve not yet added.
We use the figures a lot for our WHO-RPG games. I need many more box loads of the old school villains!
I thought Warlord had the rights to Dr Who? They have a pretty extensive range (alas they are “big” 35mm), and I’ve yet to see their game running (They mainly seem to sell to collectors rather than gamers from what I’ve seen, as half the releases don’t seem to have the “Exterminate” cards to go with the minis).
I would assume it’s a case of miniatures vs board game pieces
Warlord games have a skirmish game for Doctor Who, which has modern cybermen and daleks as well IIRC
This is the boardgame variant.
I must admit that the companions and doctors look a lot better in this one.
It’s all a bit timey-wimey … like the show.
It’s great that all the companions are coming out but the new doctor is dire in my opinion and completely killed my interest in the new shows and the game.
Amen! I do still enjoy the Hartnell to Capaldi run of the show, but the past two seasons have been blocked from my memory. (I’m hoping for a retcon where either the past two years have been a dream, or, preferably, where the REAL doctor has been marooned somewhere and an imposter time lord has stolen his TARDIS and is trying to rewrite his time line in order to become him.)
I watched the first four episodes of the new doc and they just looked like rehashed reruns of other episode’s
given how long the show has been running … rehashed reruns are going to happen.
There is however something missing from this new doctor series that I can’t quite define.
I’d say the dubstep intro and the faceless companions kind of killed it for me.
Very few episodes that were interesting so far.
I also can’t help but wonder if they were right to avoid the big doctor secret when Capaldi was around.
It also doesn’t help that the new master is a bit of an idiot who doesn’t feel threatening at all, but then the previous ones in the new series were so good.
Yeah, unfortunately… the Doctor and Master really feel like neutered versions of their previous selves. Also, the whole thing about the Doctor being the “timeless child” felt really unnecessary. Part of what makes (or made) the Doctor such a good character is that while he was a brilliant time traveler, he was still just an ordinary guy who got thrown into circumstances beyond his control and had to adapt to survive. He started out as just an average “bumbling genius adventurer” character, but he really grew and evolved in kind of a realistic way over the seasons, ESPECIALLY with Eccleston… Read more »
The best thing of the Doctor was (and is) that he is an alien with a mysterious background.
Removing that mystery is what made it suck.
And it’s not like this would be the first “retcon” in the series 😉
I think the Cybermen have had several origin stories so far and multiple variants …
I loved how they brought back the ‘original’ cybermen and gave an interesting explanation for their design. GW could have learned a lot from how they managed that (*cough* bring back the beakies)
While it makes sense for the board game to feature the current Doctor, this would appear to put GF9 in a weird position. Older copies of the game with the 12th Doctor will still be in circulation, and if the new one features corrections or improvements (the first edition has a fair number of typos), the old versions will just sit on shelves, possibly dissuading retailers from stocking the new edition. Additionally, if people who buy the new version also choose to buy the new 3rd, 8th & 13th expansion, they’ll presumably have two copies of the 13th Doctor minis… Read more »
Does anyone know how these minis scale up next to Warlord’s?
