Larian Studios Show Off First Gameplay For Baldur’s Gate III

Larian Studios, the team behind the new Baldur's Gate III, took to PAX East 2020 this week to show off the first gameplay from their upcoming title. However, we'll start by taking a peek at the trailer which gets thing started in some style...

So, things start off with you choosing a character who has been infected by one of the Mind Flayers aboard a rather fascinating looking ship. After crash landing in the middle of nowhere, you then find other survivors and seek to find a healer who can help you with your current predicament. Below is the full gameplay reveal from PAX East which was frankly, one of the best demos I think I have ever seen run at a show.
If you've ever wanted to see a Vampire throw his boots at a bandit or accidentally stab his ally whilst simply stacking boxes, you're in for a treat. However, despite some of the quirky moments in the gameplay (remember, it's in its early stages) the game seems like a really awesome take on the latest edition of Dungeons & Dragons whilst also bringing forth all manner of well-known touches from Baldur's Gate's past.
The gameplay mechanics have much more depth than I would have imagined with the ability to influence pretty much everything in the world. Want to snuff out candles and then sneak around an entire dungeon? Do it. Want to kick your enemy off a high wall and then backstab his friends? Give it a go. Want to suck the blood of your party members as a Vampire Spawn whilst in camp? Give that a go too.
There is a lot to like about the game, even when it's not entirely working properly. For someone who is a big fan of the open nature of D&D 5th Edition, it's good to see how many elements from the tabletop game have translated over into this PC outing.
I'm also a big fan of the way they've handled the conversations with your companions and others. There is a much more intimate feel to it which reminds me of games like Dragon Age where the camera zooms in and focuses on them. This is much nicer than simply viewing everything from that isometric view.
The game is going to be coming to PC in the future, possibly sooner rather than later, and will enter Early Access so that the team can get feedback on Baldur's Gate III before it finally goes live. According to the information we have so far, there is going to be a fair chunk of content for you to play through but not so much that it will spoil the game when it finally releases.
Also, the game is going to come with the ability to be played cooperatively. So, you and a friend can choose your own starting character and both have an effect on the storyline as it unfolds. You'll also be able to throw all manner of interesting twists into the mix when it comes to conversation choices and combat!
There is a lot to like about Baldur's Gate III and this is just an early view...

“Eye” catching *har har har*
The cinematic was good, as they often are in such games. Diablo and Warcraft cinematic are usually spectacular, but the game play tedious.
I watched some of the gameplay and wasn’t impressed. The original Baldurs Gate games were entertaining, but I don’t have the patience for the grind required to complete games like that anymore.
And I’m afraid the conversations don’t impress either. Why do they insist of having NPC’s talking so slowly? They’re still waffling on when I have long since read the accompanying text and waiting to make my chat decision.
It’s looking great from the videos.
Ok… I found a youtube video of someone that had seen the demo and they broke the game down.
It explained a lot of the stuff that looked crappy and it’s not that bad… quite the opposite in fact.
I’ll keep an eye on the game, but the format it is released on will affect my purchase. If it’s Window only then it’s not going to happen for me as my desktop PC is a bit clunky… and probably has spiders living in it as it’s been in the loft for a few years.
