You’ll not find a dining table that’s 6 by 4, you can find them 4 foot wide but typically then they go to about 8 foot long (and cost a fortune.
A table “topper” is probably the most cost effective why of doing it (probably with either two 3 by 4 sections or three 2 by 4 sections. It depends on where you can store/hide the sections when not in use). There’s various ways to connect the tabletop sections together and you can customise them to exactly “fit” the table you are putting the top on.
You’ll be quite surprised at how much the timber will cost for a home built table (vs the usual MDF/chipboard wargamers use). Back in the day we used to used multiple paste tables (for wall paper) to put up tables, and although they are not the most study they are cheap as chips.
In a similar situation myself, and there’s no easy answer. There are custom built “wargaming tables” but they cost a fortune. An all wood dining table can also cost a small fortune (if you can find one thats at least 4 foot wide), Perhaps you could reach out to your local “Men in Sheds” group to see if they might want to take on a commission (as these are usually retirees with lots of DIY experience)?
