Brother Vinni Introduce More Axes & Swords To The Dark Age
February 12, 2020 by brennon
Brother Vinni has been showing off more from their Dark Age collection as they released two new sets of miniatures this week. Leading the way we have the Varangian Guard who are very much the 'go-to' figures to have right now if you're playing Dark Age/Medieval games it seems.
This band of grim-looking warriors are armed with the deadly dane axe which was capable of hacking through shields and men with equal ease. In the hands of a strong warrior, these were perfect ways to crack the egg that was a shield wall. You can also see the familiar armour style of the Varangians with a mix of chainmail and that layered scale which adorns the warrior at the front.
If you're looking to build up a band of protectors for your Byzantine lord then these would be a good shout. Brother Vinni has included some nice details and accessories on the models as well to make them stand out. I like the swords strapped to their sides and the horn that one has on his belt, good for calling order in the chaos.
Early Knights
As well as the options for the Varangian Guard they have also designed some options for Long Sword wielding Early Knights which could be used as part of a Dark Age force or potentially within the ranks of a Crusading army which is headed out to the Holy Land.
Again we're seeing some nice options in terms of shields and armour and these warriors could fit into the ranks of pretty much any European power during the period. I like that the swords are being held in a variety of different stances. It gives the impression that they know what they're doing and also means you can set up some dynamic sword fights when you're skirmishing.
I always like doing this kind of thing when I play a skirmish game; making sure that the soldiers look like they are actually clashing sword-to-sword if I can! Call it an eccentricity but I think it helps build a story on the tabletop!
Are you tempted by these new Brother Vinni miniatures?

They look nice… maybe I can have a peak at them sunday
Great looking figures and the knights look particularly good.
Bought some of Vinnis Cruder Veterans, which very much looked like Norman Knights and liked them a lot. Pristine casts and sharp detail.
Will get these too.
Both of those sets look absolutely stunning.
@yoshi Agreed, Brother Vinni gets really clean casts. I was very surprised by the detail level he brings out. I picked up a Princess Leia inspired figure and the chain off the collar was held in one of the hands. Very delicate stuff compared to this but the scale detail speaks of the quality achieved.
