Apocalyptic RPG MÖRK BORG Coming Soon From Fria Ligan
February 6, 2020 by brennon
The absolutely apocalyptic and brutal roleplaying game MÖRK BORG from Ockult Örtmästare Games and Stockholm Kartell is coming out soon from the folks at Fria Ligan after its successful Kickstarter. This one is stylish and pretty wild.
To give you an idea as to the background of this pretty off-the-wall roleplaying game, here is the description from the design team...
"MÖRK BORG is a pitch-black apocalyptic fantasy RPG about lost souls and fools seeking redemption, forgiveness or the last remaining riches in a bleak and decaying world. Who are you? The tomb-robber with silver glittering between cracked fingernails? The mystic who would bend the world’s heart away from its inevitable end? The world is dying. And you with it."
Now, this sounds pretty darn insane to me and I love it! From what we've seen of the game in previews and such, the focus of the game is on the brutality of a dark world and a real push towards the classic idea of dungeon delving against terrifying foes where your heroics are most likely going to end in death and despair. How very metal!
The art style is particularly evocative and gives you a view of a world which would make Dark Souls and Bloodborne blush. Here is a bit more about what you get inside the core book...
- A brief look at this dying world. From The Two-Headed Basilisks’ gothic cathedral in Galgenbeck and Blood-countess Anthelia’s limestone palace to the fields of death in Graven-Tosk and the barren wastes of Kergüs.
- The Calendar of Nechrubel, that decides the speed of the world’s demise.
- 20 occult Powers that let you bend reality, and just as many magical catastrophes for when you disastrously fail.
- Optional rules which bring more depth to the game. Omens let you turn bad luck into a slightly better one. Classes with unique traits and quirks, and tables that will bring life into your character.
- 12 creatures to be murdered by.
- Game master tools such as tables for corpse plundering, occult treasure, adventure sparks, dungeon generating and other devilry.
- The introductory dungeon crawl scenario Rotblack Sludge, where you investigate a forgotten part of the Shadow King’s enormous ruin palace. Cannibal warlocks, poison peddlers from beyond the void and hungry gutworms await.
...again, this sounds insanely cool. It seems as if the book has also been designed so that it is pretty easy to pick up and explore and you can even take what you like from this and drop it into your other roleplaying games too if you liked. It's always good to have a well of inspiration to draw from.
With an art style which reminds me of heavy metal albums, you can imagine a seriously grungy soundtrack being played in the background whilst you dive into this game. Heck, the team even put together an inspirational Spotify Playlist giving you an idea as to the music that has inspired this world.
In the modern tabletop world, we are seeing more people than ever being able to bring their visions to life. MÖRK BORG is certainly one of those games and you'll be able to pick it up from Fria Ligan and at select stores later this month on 25th February.
Are you tempted to snap up this roleplaying game when it drops?

This sounds an interesting change to standard game’s a more dark gritty style kill or be killed.
The graphic design of that book is simply gorgeous! What a way to stand out and announce yourself within RPGs!
This looks really cool, I’d definitely be tempted to grab this and see if my local group want to give it a go.
This looks worth getting for the art and design alone. Sounds like there are plenty of ideas to be plundered for other games too. And who knows, if it’s not too lengthy to get into, I could even see a one-shot or short campaign.
