Fallen Frontiers Falls From Kickstarter
June 17, 2014 by dracs
It's sad news as the Kickstarter for the promising new scifi game Fallen Frontiers has been cancelled.
Here's the statement that went out on the Kickstarter:
"Hi guys:
After several days of hard working trying to make this campaign a success, and after realizing that we cant reach the minimum goal to fund this project. We have decided to cancel funding and rethink the way of release of our product.
Fallen Frontiers is a real project, a project that has come to stay, and a project created and backed by great professionals from miniatures and wargames world. Even so we have decided to learn from our mistakes and fix them in order to return stronger.
Scale Games team wants to thank you all for your support, for your backing and for your comments during this campaign. To All the backers, shops, forums, blogs, general media and also to our friends and family who have been unconditionally on our side during this Kickstarter. THANK YOU A LOT!!! Even for your severe critics that made our project to grow bigger.
You will soon realize that we have learned a lot from this experience!
Many of you have trusted on us and we would like that to stay that way since Fallen Frontiers is going forward. If you want to keep up to date with Fallen Frontiers information , you can register on our mailing list HERE or follow us on our media (www.facebook.com/fallenfrontiers and www.fallenfrontiers.com )
Again, Thank you all! And see you soon! Kind regards.
SCALE GAMES TEAM"
While it is sad news to see it cancelled, it is encouraging to hear that they are not giving up on the project. Fallen Frontiers did have a fair level of potential, especially in terms of the miniatures that we had already seen for it, so t will be interesting to see what they have planned for the future.

The minis looked good – I understand they were larger than 28mm.
The thing about Kickstarters is we have all become very spoiled by the high standards set by some companies so a lot more is expected. In fact, some people seem to think a KS should be freebies and exclusives almost on a daily basis which is not the way top run a business.
I think the small level of confusion from the company (concerning scale and materials) was blown way out of proportion by certain sectors of the community to the point that it undermined buyer confidence. Its too bad because i really really wanted those Berserkers! I’m sure it will come back with this as a learning experience and be better than ever!
I think that’s an understatement. The level of entitlement from certain people was ridiculous and I do hope that Scale are not put off by it. The minis were excellent designs and the resource management concepts of the game were interesting.
seems like a shame to cancel the funding now …
already had $137,000 : /
sounds crazy when you think of it like that,
oh well, a relaunch at a slightly lower target will do really well I think 🙂
I was about to pledge for it as soon as a few of my friends jumped to it, but them this happened. The problem with Kickstarter is that there are moments where there is just too many companies doing theirs at once and our funds ended up being spread out among them, sometimes being move from one to the other as soon as they hit more stretch goals ( probably this was the reason why the lost funds vs Dust and others ). I hope Beast of War can give them more repercussion ( interviews, gameplay, showcase ) when they… Read more »
I was thinking about it and I liked the look of some of the models. But when I saw they were 40mm models I just said no. I do not want to have to make gaming tables that only work with this one game. And I do not all the stuff I have now to be incompatible with some games I own. That was the main problem for me and I do not think I am alone in that.
Here’s hoping they bounce back soon. I was looking forward to this, it was the first starter set where I wanted ALL of the minis. Ideally they will be able to make them in hard plastic, not resin.
This was a tough sector of the market for them to break into with so many good sci-fi skirmish games already established like Infinity and Mercs. I’m sure it did not help that there was so many excellent kickstarters all out at the same time to distract potential investors. I thought Fallen Frontiers showed real promise with some excellent preparation work carried out by the Scale Games Team. I was disappointed to see it get shelved and I wish them every success with the re-launch.
I have agree with certain voices on this project that the scale for the mini’s was all wrong and should have been the same as the more popular leading table top games. Gamers want that flexibility to incorporate elements of certain games into others if they don’t want the actual game itself and any manufacturer who doesn’t keep that in mind leaves themselves at disadvantage IMO. How many people would have backed this just for the mini’s if they were ‘Infinity’ scale I wonder?
Scale is always a balance though, I love my infinity miniatures, best 28mm range out there by a mile (and only really challenged at any level by the old confrontation range from Rackham which of course no longer exists), but the detail on the larger models is worth the size leap in my opinion. I actually own a couple of the scale games 75mm versions of these minis and they are amazing models, very high quality production and sculpting, if going to 28mm would lose half of the detail and finess of the scuplts I say keep it at 40mmm… Read more »
It is a shame that this is a consideration for so many hobbyists. It leads to homogenisation and is bad for the hobby in general. A game really should be judged in isolation from others. Before DZC the only 10mm I’m aware of was model trains, not wargames, and they are going strong. Perhaps it is the proximity to 28/32mm that is the problem; close enough where people think it should just conform to the most common approach.
In this “Golden Age of Miniature Gaming” there is a point at which lots of small start up efforts are going to struggle in a saturated market unless they do something special. There’s only room in most gamers lives for a couple of games, yet alone one from each genre, yet alone multiple games/formats from each genre.
Look at what this is up against in the Sci-Fi / Near future, skirmish, miniature fighting genre… and ask what’s different about these guys. Looking good is no longer enough!
yeah, scale’s always a very divisive issue, and most companies don’t even have a standard agreement to what 28mm scale is : / … some say it’s 28mm to the eyes like GW, then other minis say they are 35 mm scale like Mercs, but thats to the top of head, … so really they’re still 30 mm scale (@ , @) which means a 32mm mini to the eyes, is like 38mm to top of head, … so that might have confused people about the 40mm scale ? : ( which is a shame, because it would make a… Read more »
Quite a shame really, I was looking forward to it!
