Community Spotlight: Rancorsome Painting, Classic Skinks & Stumpy Dwarfs
February 2, 2020 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great looking pieces this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Rancor by pheonom
We start with more awesomeness from the world of Star Wars and have a look at the work by pheonom who has been painting up this excellent Rancor from Fantasy Flight Games' Star Wars: Imperial Assault. This is a sterling look for this creature and you get the sense that it could have come right out of Return Of The Jedi!
Monsters are always fun to paint up and I think that pheonom has been doing some good stuff here. The work across the model, especially getting the wrinkled skin to look as good as it does is fantastic and as I mentioned above, it feels like it could have been the creature from the movie. I also really like the work that has gone into the claws, especially around the end nearer the fingers themselves where the extra effort has been taken to show dirt and grime.
Everything about the model is just fun and I think it could now take pride of place not only in the Star Wars: Imperial Assault game but also in something like Legion too.
I love the idea of an assault on Jabba's Palace where your forces are trying to break through the doors which are being held by Imperial Stormtroopers he has managed to hire. Then, as you blast open the doors it turns out the Rancor has been able to get loose and now it is seeing to kill everything in its path, friend or foe!
Skinks by civilcourage
We're then heading from the world of Sci-Fi to that of Fantasy and checking out the work going into a sterling army of Lizardmen from civilcourage who has been doing some fantastic work in bringing to life an old army from Warhammer Fantasy Battles.
The current work has been going into this selection of fantastic Lizardmen Skinks who have been painted up in a fantastic teal colour. This is the way that I remember Skinks looking back in the day and I think that the elements of bone/bronze and such which have been mixed into the paint scheme is great. Also, that basing work is fantastic and the flowers really help to tie the unit together and break up the mass about of teal.
The rest of the project linked above gives you a really nice view of what else has been happening with the project. A lot of steps were shown on the painting of the Skinks and there is plenty still to come with a Slann, Saurus Warriors, Kroxigors and more in the pipeline from civilcourage.
As someone who really, really loved the old armies of Warhammer Fantasy Battles this really did capture my attention and I can't wait to see how the rest of the force looks at the end. Whilst the massed ranks of characters were always very similar-looking there is something to be said for the pageantry of these classic armies
Kings Of War Dwarfs by astralknight
Next up we're sticking with Fantasy but a different game. Here we're taking a look at a Kings Of War Dwarf army which has been painted up by astralknight. The army has been painted up using a selection of different contrast paints and I think the final effect is very nice indeed. You certainly can see a lot of shading and highlighting immediately thanks to the choice of colours.
I think that you can see how quickly an army can come together if you use the contrast paints and make sure that you're neat. Also, whilst astralknight isn't sure on the shields I think they look great and the way that the paint has settled gives the shield an almost magical look. I think some transfers might be key here just to help out but otherwise, the warriors are looking great.
There is lots more for astralknight to paint up for this army but as it stands this is a great way to get to the tabletop and start battling in Kings Of War. I will even forgive Mantic for using Dwarfs rather than Dwarves because it's nice to see more people doing the mass battle thing on the tabletop.
Make sure to head on over to the project link above and drop your words of encouragement into the mix to help out.

Thank you for the wonderful feedback guys, you should check out the finished Rancor now I’ve put finishing touches to the base! I’m also loving the other projects here, amazing work everyone!
Love your work guy’s are you doing the keeper for the Rancor @pheonom
They don’t actually have a mini for the Rancor Keeper in Imperial Assault, otherwise I’d have totally painted him!
Shame could be a kitbash for the future?
Square bases 😉
Lovely minis all round people. I do love the Mantic dwarfs just for sentimentality reasons….. I have so many of the little beggars
Nice projects!
Great work everyone, well deserved Golden Buttons. Love the use of Contrast on the skinks, great to see old WHFB armies getting the love. Fantastic use of drybrushing on the Rancor, really adds texture to the model and a fantastic project log too!
