The Explorer’s Guide To Wildemount Joins The D&D Realms
January 14, 2020 by brennon
Dungeons & Dragons welcomes a new realm to its many planes of existence with The Explorer's Guide To Wildemount which is the brainchild of Critical Role's Matt Mercer.
This new book is a campaign setting for those who want to delve into the world created by Matt Mercer for Campaign Two of the Critical Role series. The book, available in March, will cover the continent which is the focus for the latest campaign featuring The Mighty Nein.
As well as focusing in on the plot which is unfolding across Wildemount, Mercer has also delved into the wider world of Exandria and brought in more elements from his world's history to give you an idea as to how everything came to be. It is going to be a really massive chunk of awesomeness for those obsessed with his world and characters.
- An expansive Wildemount gazetteer.
- Descriptions of the major factions of Wildemount.
- Player options that include new subclasses, new spells, and a tool to help players deeply integrate their characters into the setting.
- New magic items, including weapons that become more powerful to match their wielders.
- New creatures native to Wildemount.
- Four introductory adventures—one for each unique region of Wildemount.
Matt Mercer has previously worked with Green Ronin to produce the Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting which dealt with that continent in Exandria and the lands ranged by Vox Machina in Campaign One but this new book, an official D&D sourcebook, means that Exandria is now a legitimate and permanent part of the D&D planar universe. This is pretty awesome as previous to this the last setting to do so was probably Eberron!
Even if you're not a fan of the world Matt Mercer has designed, this book offers up a multitude of new options for those who want to take parts of it and transplant them into their own worlds. New systems of magic, creatures, classes and even race variants are all included in here for you to use as if from a toolkit.
So, make sure to let me know what you think!

They are very insightful, even if I still find Mercer’s naming conventions for a few things a bit hard to pronounce haha.
I have nothing against Matt Mercer, and its cool to see his world in official DnD print.
However, my only real complaint is the fact that they aren’t fleshing out their current campaign worlds very well and now they’ve added yet another one to the mix.
Really would like to see them flesh out the worlds they have now. Or visit the classic worlds they’ve yet to visit at least.
According to chatter from Mercer and others, this hasn’t taken any real time away from developing their existing settings – I can understand how people would love to see them do more with Eberron etc and tell more stories in those realms (plus the likes of Dragonlance etc) but I think it would be a big misfire if WotC hadn’t jumped on this with Mercer and Critical Role. As a few folks have been saying online, Exandria/Wildemount/Tal’Dorei are probably the first introduction to D&D for a lot of people and got them playing the new edition and it could well… Read more »
I’d like to see Dark Sun explored in detail… I picked up the old AD&D box second hand at an expo a few years ago…
That would make some interesting Archetypes for the core classes of 5e and introduce some new races.
Dark Sun was superb
If you’re interested in fan material… I found this…

Past experience with GM Binder revealed it doesn’t like all browsers, so I suggest Chrome for this…
You can convert to PDF, but it takes a little while…
You have to love the RPG community… the amount of work they put in for free to their favourite campaign setting is amazing…
I’ll be bookmarking that thanks
Ooh nice.
When I heard about this book I instantly put it on my list.
As soon as Amazon sit up it’s pre-order I bought in. ??
