Osprey Offer Up Sneak Peek At Oathmark Kingdom Building
January 13, 2020 by brennon
Osprey Games has been showing off more of the Kingdom Building element that comes with their upcoming game, Oathmark: Battles Of The Lost Age.
Building on what we learned last week from their blog HERE, the team now present a preview of the Kingdom Building pages in PDF form. This gives you an idea of exactly how you take each of the different factions and then build up their Kingdom, allowing you to create army lists which are themed around a narrative pretty much from the off.
You can download the PDF HERE and take a look. It is a pretty nifty system and means that you've already got a story building around your force before you get stuck into the battles themselves. The preview also gives us an idea of how big (or small) your games are going to be.
A small beginner game comes in at 550 points and should use one or two boxes of Oathmark figures. A standard game comes in at 2500 points and will feature several larger units and perhaps a few creatures and characters too. Things then expand from there on out but it's good to see that with one or two boxes of models you can play a good game of Oathmark.
What do you think?

That looks interesting and nice and simple as well.
Yes, I was very worried that it was going to be overly complex. I think it is pretty straight forward and offers up some fascinating ideas for army creation.
Hmmmmm….. Not that impressed with it so far. I was hoping more for something where you’d built a kingdom over time and not directly have choices over all kinds of terrain to enter in your city. But by reading it, I feel like it’s just an additional step to army building and not a campaign mechanic.
I imagine it might also have an effect in campaigns. They have mentioned how you can lose territory to your opponents etc so there will probably be other elements.
Let’s hope so.
We’ll be going into the Campaign System in more detail later, but Kingdom Creation is an integral part of campaigns in Oathmark. Not only does your Kingdom grant you different options to choose from when mustering your forces before each game, it also provides you with the setting for your battles. Throughout the Campaign you will be fighting to add new territories to your Kingdom (filling up the outer-most ring of the Kingdom Sheet), attacking your opponent’s territories, or defending your own. Like I said, we’ll be going into the Campaign System in more detail in the future, so keep… Read more »
yeah, it does feel a bit lightweight (OTOH … RTS games tend to have the same problem).
You need some sort of balance to keep big kingdoms from having too much choice when fighting the smaller ones.
While that makes sense in real life, it does kind of suck in a campaign mode eventually become so strong that the smaller kingdoms don’t stand a chance unless alliances are a realistic option.
Im a bit disappointed.
Not a lot of depth, was hoping for a little more of a robust system.
Still to early to make decisions, though.
Quite looking forward to this game, the kingdom building adds that back story which should really add to the game immersion. Cant wait for more.
To me it feels like something you would run as a campaign for a couple of weeks or over an extra long weekend. I dont think it’s meant to be one of those that last several months if they ever actually do
Sounds like this could be interesting.
I think it looks really interesting. I would even be OK with the choices being even more limited – as I read the rules there is still a lot of choice even with limited territories. I can already see this working out just with a list as it is provided already – and maybe in the future one could hope for a “Mighty Empires” styled expansion that makes even more dramatic.
Best of luck to the Oathmark team!
