Fascinating 3D Printing News
So, it looks like Hero Forge are going to be starting something pretty special soon. They have been teasing the development of their platform with all new tweaks but the really fascinating part is that it is going to include a Full-Colour option.
Are they going to be able to "change the game"? Well, Warren and the guys share their thoughts on the matter and talk about what the prospects are for this kind of technology. We also make sure to note existing options like that from Shapeways and soon from Secret Weapon Miniatures.
News
As well as that pretty exciting news from Hero Forge we also have more for you...

Happy Weekend!!
It’s the Weekender, 2020 Style!
I’m sure the OTT Team has our gaming for the new decade well in hand.
I received news that those of us who backed Firelock Games ‘Oak and Iron’ should be seeing our products in February. That’s great news! ??
I’m thinking that 3D Printers will will be in the news a lot this year. I know mine rarely sees any down time. Will we see mega leaps or a continuous forward progression?
Since I got my AnyCubic Photon a few days ago it’s hardly had any off time too; which means I’ve now got about twenty-odd new miniatures that need painting (I was late to the game with “forest printing” and for a long time just printed one mini at a time!) I think the printer will be getting a well-deserved break soon, if only so I can whack some primer on a few of the minis it’s produced for me and see how they look painted up. My pile of grey isn’t getting any smaller… (maybe we’ll see a continuous forward… Read more »
Happy Saturday (afternoon) …An interesting show lads, the Hero-Forge image is in fact a colored render as ced1106 shows over in the news thread
Yup, seems so, although we’ve now seen these teasers which show off some prototypes potentially.

Happy Saturday! I’m with you on the faction diversity point. It’s why I’m more drawn to games like Necromunda. The factions are different but at a much more subtle and detailed level, and all grounded within a strong gritty setting. This really helps with the immersion. It’s why I am also drawn to the idea of Warcry – I hope they don’t diversify it too much or they’ll remove its unique appeal. Another example is Wild West Exodus. The core of it is the Wild West setting and that is really compelling. But grey aliens? Could really do without those.… Read more »
Yup – I think by their very scale and scope the skirmish games are more appealing. I really like the personal touch you get with Necromunda/Mordheim etc.
Lloyd is a Chelsea fan?. Good man
Team Commodore / Amiga all the way!
LoL
I thought it was just a jump to the left and a step to the riiigghtht!
Put your hands on your hips
You bring your knees in tight
But it’s the pelvic thrust
That really drives you insane
😉
It’s the Weekend! What is it I used to do first thing Saturday morning in the last decade?
Well OK, after the obvious bodily functions what next?
Something on my tablet involving watching a group of guys wittering on about GW products before getting onto the interesting stuff. It’s slowly coming back to me… maybe if I watch this video?
Some words to describe the AoS universe? Amorphous, Entropy…
Maybe a solution has just been announced? I was watching TV last night and during a commercial break first thought I’d nodded off and was dreaming when an ad for an AoS subscription magazine came on. Turns out I wasn’t asleep:
https://www.warhammermortalrealms.com/
Now I’m sure the magazine content won’t just be rehashed from existing source and will provide a clear, new explanation of this Universe so you’ll be ready to play a game in about 9 months when you have enough models 😉
lol
I am rapidly falling in love with your cynicism lol
My growing inner grognard is taking notes 😉
Having looked closer at the website it appears the subscription provides a lot up front so you can actually play a basic skirmish almost immediately. The fact you get clippers, glue, brushes, painting handle etc within the first 5 issues is going to make many people sit up!
We just know that someone, somewhere has cracked out a spreadsheet and compared value for price against a standard retail model and others are in a flaming rant about it.
I was all ready to subscribe, for that regular injection of AOS, and then saw that it’s NOT available to those outside the UK and R.O.I.
What a bunch of teases! ?
Shapeways already have a multi-colour print option for 3D printed objects!
As such Heroforge is more like a specialized version of Shapeways service …
// usage rights in 3d files ?
Let’s call it what it is : DRM …
So this news on possible pre-coloured 3D models is certainly interesting, don’t get me wrong, but if the typical cycle of all consumer products is anything to go by: this will be rough and ready and will then be refined over the coming years as people get to better grips with the technology and the techniques until it reaches it’s peak. I suppose the question is: with 3D printing having been a hobby job for so long, have we in fact been through those years of iterative improvements behind closed doors? Certainly looking forward to find out. Also: when will… Read more »
I believe the price of getting them in the EU went down recently didn’t it? I may have not noticed but I thought the price was significantly lower than it used to be.
You are correct. Down to $6.99 from around $15 if memory serves. Improves the proposition somewhat if you consider springing for a few at the same time.
A lecturer on technology breaks new technology into three phases:
* Enthusiast: Puts up with slow speeds, inconvenience, complexity, etc.
* Business: Applies technology for other purposes. Drives down prices.
* Consumer: Demands low prices. Wants it simple.
The first and last phases are too-often confused. 3D printing is certainly making inroads to business, such as a dentist’s creating implants with a 3D printer, or an appliance store making 3D printed OOP replacement parts. But, until the 3D printer becomes as commonplace and mundane as microwaves and inkjet printers, I’d say it’s not at the consumer phase yet.
Thanks for the show and happy 2020 to all.
Happy New Year everyone and Happy Weekender :).
It’s a new year…. time for a new system! Skyrim is in the run…. any other new systems coming out this year?
Gangs Of The Undercity is coming to Kickstarter and might end up releasing later in the year. So, that’s your Cyberpunk/Fantasy to get involved in. Also, Oathmark of course.
That’s actually one I was looking into but kickstarters are like wizzards…. they arrive when they want 😉 Maybe that one for next year. But thanks for the info. Oathmark … never been great into fantasy as a whole…
Howdy Ho campers
This is the actual colour print from this hero forged thing via Kid Kyoto on Dakkadakka
I’ve said it before but they look like pound shop toys.
I have to agree. Nothing I’d like for RPG or my miniature game personally
I don’t think these look too bad. I reckon with a shade over the top they’d be pretty neat. I think they’re a step above WizKids which is good at least too!
Pretty soapy looking which is disappointing as we know prints can be very sharp these days, so to take a step back in that to add colour is a bit of a difficult trade off.
I will wait and see what happens 🙂
If I could go to Poundland and buy a colored miniature that looked *exactly* like my (friend’s) dual-wielding, light chainmail, fully clothed, white pony-tail hero, I’d buy it.
But, until then, this will do. And, I imagine, it will do just fine on the RPG table.
EDIT: Past $1M and 12K backers. What? Not everyone wants to spend their free time converting miniatures and painting them??? 😀
Way too much GW these last 12 months……..yawn
They’ve been doing some great stuff recently so it seems apt to talk about them. We have other things in the mix though so watch this space.
Another great Weekender show, I think that the 3D printing technology is growing by leaps and bounds. Bring back the Squats in the 40k universe either as a new for from the other side of the galaxy or a Empire that materializes from the Warp rifts
Happy weekend all! 🙂 Enjoy !
happy weekender folks.
Lots of new stuff that is interesting to me coming soon.
Gonna be an expensive year!
Happy Weekend!
So many cool minis in the background! how do you manage to dust them off? or is there a trick to keep the dust away?
We make sure Justin goes round and blows the dust off them all with nothing but his own gusto.
@warzan I think @dignity is right about human Tau troops. I think they’re just what is needed. Firstly let’s deal with the ‘more of the same’ argument. You don’t look at Necromunda and complain about the gangs being human. Or Warcry gangs being chaos-worshipping humans. The 40K universe has plenty of humans, but they’re our way of connecting with the setting. What matters is whether they’re interesting and what they bring. So what do human Tau auxiliaries bring? They bring an alternative model of civilisation to the Imperium. Never mind their military might (or lack of); their very existence is… Read more »
Great thesis here….
I hope some from GW either reads and implements this or has already had thoughts along similar lines and is the basis for book 5 of Psychic Awakening, titled “The Greater Good”. Unless someone plays with the genetics or the T’au uncover another psychic race.

And to answer Warren’s questions, the colour use looks pretty detailed to match that 3D render
