Community Spotlight: Mighty Avengers, Grimdark Terrain & That’s No Moon!
January 12, 2020 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Forums and Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great looking pieces this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Marvel Heroes & Villains by pthw199
We kick things off today as we're looking at some Marvel Heroes and Villains from Atomic Mass Games' Marvel: Crisis Protocol. Here are the characters from the starter box plus you've also got the mighty M.O.D.O.K in there as well for good measure. The painting from pthw199 is superb and I love the way each of the characters has come together.
I've seen a lot of different ways of painting the models from this set but I think this particular take on them stood out because of the really poppy colours used across the models. It reminded me a little bit of a more retro comic book style and I think it really works for the likes of Black Widow, Captain America and especially Captain Marvel there on the left. M.O.D.O.K also looks imposing and the contrast of yellow and purple really does look good!
This over-the-top highlighting and shading is really good for Crisis Protocol and these bigger miniatures. It will be hard to forget who is who and where they are on the board with these schemes! Now, the only thing I'd like to see is some more images from pthw199 of these miniatures close up!
Orkacron by deaddave
Next, we're checking out a completed project from deaddave who has been with the community for a long time. Here is the work on a scratch built piece which has been added into his Battlefleet Gothic collection. Why have a simple rok for your Orks to smash through the galaxy with when you can get a Transformers-inspired Orkacron instead?!
Now, this is a rather awesome looking piece. The final finish of the kit is pretty fantastic, this massive rusted ball floating through the galaxy and unleashing swarms of Ork craft as it does so but once you get into all the details you notice just how many bits and bobs have been added into the mix.
The final effect of that opening 'iris' at the front of the craft is certainly the most engaging element of this model and I love that you can see all sorts of little guns and such dotted around the outside so that the Weird Boyz and Warbosses can keep an eye on what is going on. If you're interested in the process that went into bringing this together, deaddave has made a rather in-depth project which you can find linked above.
Once you see where this came from and the different elements that came together to make it what it is, you can tell that a lot of tender love and care (at least an Orky amount!) went into creating this. It is also worth seeing what else he has been working on with all sorts of ships and such from the history of Battlefleet Gothic getting painted up and tinkered with.
Necromunda Terrain by doctorether
Finally, we're sticking with the grimdark future and taking a peek at some stunning terrain from doctorether, painted up for use in his Necromunda and Kill Team games.
The main reason why these images managed to find their way into the Community Spotlight is that they remind me of the aspirational photos we all used to pour over when we were reading through White Dwarf magazine. Seeing characters like these battling over some awesome looking terrain, deep in the midst of the action, really does get the mind whirring and thinking about all sorts of gangs you could start.
A breakdown of the simple scheme and palette used to work on this terrain can be found HERE. It is nothing special but it has been applied really nicely in order to create the look of a brutal landscape quickly and effectively. You'll also have noted, of course, a whole bunch of very cool looking gangs and such in the mix too. But yes, the terrain is the star of the show this time around.
I particularly liked this shot. It shows Belladonna and one of her Escher bodyguards meeting a Palanite Enforcer deep within the bowels of the Underhive, perhaps trying to negotiate some deal before everything goes to hell around them.
As always, if you want to see more of doctorether's work it is well worth diving in and checking out the project linked above because it is jammed packed with painting which will get you itching to start playing some Necromunda!

Noice!
Well done all, especially Orkacron’s small moon for Battlefleet Gothic …..what?… It’s no moon?…..It’s a apace station!?! ….. simply beautiful.
Orkacron just needs a little Star Scream.
That Necromunda terrain looks great… my lazy ass approach involved spray cans…
I try to justify it in part by the sheer amount of stuff I have to paint… but terrain just takes so long to complete if I don’t use quick techniques.
Stunning work folks.
Really nice stuff lads!
Woot!!! Deadave FTW! Now we just jeed to preplan for the next Orktober project. I say start now as it takes a while before things get real.
