What To Expect From The Launch Of Modiphius’ Elder Scrolls?
January 2, 2020 by brennon
Modiphius fired up a Development Blog not long ago where they were looking at what you can expect from the launch of The Elder Scrolls: Call To Arms when it comes to the tabletop in March of 2020. The first focus swung to the release of the Core Set...
This set doesn't come with any miniatures (which will be available separately) but it does come with all of the rules, tokens, cards, dice and more than you need to play the game. You'll get a good selection of scenarios including a forty-four-page Quests Book featuring twelve missions and a sixteen-page introduction to the game which takes place during the iconic scene from the start of Skyrim, the Escape From Helgen.
Miniature Sets
So, with the Core Rules set bringing together all of the extra gubbins you need to play the game the focus then switches to some new boxes which offer up different play experiences. If you're looking to dive into the game either by yourself or as part of a cooperative experience then you might want the Bleak Falls Barrow Delve Starter Set.
Inside this set, you're going to find the iconic Dragonborn wearing that very stylish helmet plus three Skeleton Archers, three Draugr Warriors and a Draugr Overlord which forms the basis of that early quest in the video game. This gives you the chance to play through the game as the Dragonborn going up against Minions, Elites and Master adversaries as you learn the game and you can then of course port all of this over into a player-versus-player scenario if you like.
If you feel yourself siding with one of the factions within the world of Skyrim more than the other (both are pretty evil in their own way) you've got the choice of either the Imperial Legion or Stormcloak Starter Sets.
In the Imperial Legion Set, you'll find the leader known as Hadvar, Hero Of Helgen who is backed up by a rather awesome looking Imperial Spellsword and then three Imperial Legionnaires who are armed with swords and shields, ready to hold the line with Hadvar.
Of course, because the game (like Fallout) focuses on being able to be played as a solo, cooperative or competitive experience, you can use all of the models from this set and the Stormcloak one across all of these different game modes.
Within the Stormcloak Set, you'll get yourself some eager warriors serving under the guidance of Ulfric Stormcloak. Leading the set here you have Yrsarald Thrice Pierced who I do like as a whole but the posing of the figure still seems a bit weird to me. He seems all bent out of shape, but maybe it's just the angle of the photograph?
Either way, he is supported by Ralof, Warrior Of The Resistance, another survivor from Helgen and the alternative choice of ally for the Dragonborn in the early section of the video game. He comes armed with a bow and looks very cool indeed.
Supporting them you then have the brutal Stormcloak Warriors who are armed with their greatswords and support Yrsarald in thunderous charges whilst Ralof skirts the battlefield looking for a chance to pick off his foes from afar.
All of this comes together into a neat package which should offer up a nice launch for the game. I much prefer Elder Scrolls compared to Fallout so this might be the world which draws me into a bit more solo and cooperative gaming on the tabletop from Modiphius.
What do you think?

A core set without minis? That’s a bit weird…. has anybody done this before? An do I read the back of the box correctly that you don’t need the minis for a solo or 2 player game? At least that’s how it’s sounds. It would make the initial investment in just the rules for a lower price easier with optional army buying later.
And where are the dragons? and trolls? and bears!?
And my sweetrolls!!!
Yes, as I mentioned above, Crooked Dice offer up their 7TV Starter Set without miniatures as you can then just get whatever you want from their range. I believe you do need miniatures to play the introductory scenario presented in the rules…but you could just get those from your own collection before choosing to dive in and play around with the other official stuff.
Thanks Ben but I can’t find any reference to Crooked Dice in this article…. maybe I’m blind or it has been edited?
Turns out I meant to write that…but didn’t. My bad hah.
Thank goth, I thought I was being lazy on reading again XD Well, now just to wait for Modiphius to release the set. Maybe a bit more on time as Fallout? 😉
They’ve done a core set without minis because of the surveys they did. Apparently the feedback was that players didn’t want a core set containing a faction (or factions) that they did not want. So the decision was made to just do a core set that gave you everything else that you needed (rules, dice, tokens etc) and then the minis could pick and buy the minis that they want.
That’s a really good idea for other game companies to start doing as well.
Probably also because proper starter sets (with minis) are typically loss leaders, meant to be sold at low (or even negative) margin, in order to get people to buy in to the system and eventually buy other more profitable product. I believe I’ve read that Modiphius are re-jiggering the bigger Fallout minis faction boxes because they can’t make enough money the way they are currently configured.
Early press releases did allude to a 2-player starter box, but as Balthazaar said they sought feedback and have moved to a modular product sets with an ‘essentials without models’ starter pack. The three faction sets are a good start-point, but you’ll need monsters, enemies, opposing factions and of course some dragons before too long. I guess a big factor for some is how constrained do you feel about the aesthetic presented in Skyrim and ESOL etc. as to what models and scenery you put on the table? Personally I think the Battlesystems Fantasy KS terrain arriving soon post KS… Read more »
Bam ?
This looks very swish, definitely going to pick up the core rules and the dungeon delve expansion.
I reckon i will end up with the other sets over time as well.
Sean bean has escaped the pc game?
All the figures do look good.
Bang goes that NY resolution to not buy more minis games!
Good effort. You made it to 31 hours by Mountain Time. I was lost as soon as I saw the Wargames Foundry Saxons…
I’m not sure how I feel about this – I like the world of Elder Scrolls, but I don’t feel a burning need to play it on the tabletop. I view miniature games and video games as different things, and expect different things from them. Splitting the miniatures into different boxes from the rules might work well – A.lot will depend on what price points they are going for -I think Modiphus could have had more success with fallout (based on another Bethesda game) if they made it more affordable. If.they are reasonably priced I might pick up some.minis just… Read more »
Looks interesting. This could be one that my son may be interested in, and it looks like a low model-count game, so an easy buy-in. I don’t imagine it will be cheap on a “per model” basis, but the models look like they are nice sculpts, so colour me interested. Provided the production values are high that is. Modiphius have made some lovely metal models in the past, so I am optimistic. As long as they don’t go for a horrible bendy plastic/resin like so many other companies …
All these faction starters are HIPS (Hard Plastic).
Looking at the unpainted models
It seems Yrsarald Thrice Pierced has been twisted a bit to much in assembly (maybe it was the resin model) and the angle of the photo is bad. The unpainted version looks way better IMHO
I enjoy the Solo Co-op play in Rangers of Shadow Deep so this looks great. The miniatures also look good and if I do not like the game I can just use them in another game.
Hopefully someone has a play through before March
I think a lot will come down to the quality of the miniatures. Happy to see that they abandoned the awful PVC they tried with the initial fallout starter box. Hopefully their new hard plastic works out, and the scale is compatible with other games so I can hedge my risk buying in. If they come out as good as they look in pics, and their supply chain improved I could definitely see trying this out.
What’s the base size? 30mm?
